Smilerguy: Obama may be disappointing to the liberals, unions & the centre-left majority of American opinion but for those who have & haven't jobs, a McCain or whatever Republicon in 2012 would be extremely worse.
Government has bureaucracy but cutting publis services would inflate those in poverty

We appreciate the thought. But American jobs are made by American business....big and small....and just making a large gov't sector....just adds to the deficit since little real economic value is added to the GNP by the gov't sector.

McCain was for small business. It was his idea during the election to do a spending freeze....a position now taken by Obama but not the rest of the Senate. So?

Every major position....Obama has taken.....was either first taken or proposed by REP. GWB on GITMO. GWB on the first TARP bailout. A surge in Afganistan, again in the transition recommendation of GWB.
McCain's spending freeze. Beirnake handling of the FED during the economic crisis....GWB ordered.

A common sense position is often the right position to take. Even Obama can see that. Liberal don't want common sense positions to be taken. They need crisis and radical change in gov't to be happy.

But then when they have the best opportunity in the world to get govt health care....and redo 1/6 of the countries economy.....look at what happens? One Senate election......and they begin to fold.

Obama's State of the Union was to also bring DEM back into fight here. The more he does...the more he is attached to radical change in the American gov't and the more ammo the Tea Baggers have in 2010 and 2012.

A lot of what you say is true Tom, but it is also in the 'way' of any serious change, not only in the US, but the world. Big business and big government are both Leviathans of misery. They have become so big, that dismantling them even in portions would put the world into the worst socio economic tailspin ever.

I think the problem is much bigger than the singular issues that people spend their time on trying to repair and or upgrade, because it's being done within a system that is bound to come crashing down from it's own weight.

ttom500: Ever see the Rockie Mountain, Kiwi? Lake Tahoe? Yellowstone National Park? The Grand Canyon? The Redwoods? The Badlands? Gettysburg?

You could put most all of NZ in to one of those areas, Kiwi. "Your trees and land".....here we don't take claim to land or it is resources. We don't say we own them.....rather we say we are stewards of them. To manage them.

But that "good heart" of your just has to reach out grap on to them.
Well I say hang on to them, Kiwi....hold on tight. As tight as you can in fact. Tell everyone in the world that you have the land and the trees of NZ.

Because you are in for a learning experience. Study the American Indian if you want to know how to treat the land. To be one with it. Because as soon as you say it is mine.....you lose.

ttom500: Remember the "Yes We Can" saying of the Obama campaign?

I remember where I have heard it before. Ever see 'Bob the Builder' children's TV show? It was the theme saying of his show. I wash at the library today, they staff was checking in a BoB the Builder DvD.....all over the front in big red letter...."YES WE CAN"

Obama campaign approriated (er stole) a children cartoon saying for their campaign slogan. Because I bet this critter is copywritten. Bob the Builder was around long before Obama's Campaign of 2008.

One more headache for the White House.....when the Rob Emanuel gets a cease and desist order from a judge on using the "YES WE CAN" in the 2012 campaign.......

Remember how pathetic it was when the old war monger dude McCain tried to steal Obama,s slogan and even copied the colours of his campain on his site? rolling on the floor laughing

Pres. Obama and VP Biden were in Tampa, Florida today. At the University of Tampa, to a enthusiac croud of Floridans....

As they announced that the FED Gov't would chip in funds for the High Speed rail system that will run from Orlando-Tampa-Miami.
The number I have heard is $3b in FED funds. The things is.....the project is still $1.5b short.

Some FL lawmakers asked were it was coming from. Other already had an answer....the FED Gov't will cover the short fall.

Interesting absent for the days proceedings......Gov Charlie Crist and his REP opponent Mark Rubio...that both are running for the REP Senate nomination. Free promoting is usually a politician dream but were no shows. Local Mayor Buddie Dyers attended.

As for the comment of the day. President Obama said...."When you get it (high speed rail) built, I will come back and ride on it." And VP Joe Biden still tired from last night's State of the Union address....chimed in...."I will too."

If we don't find the additional $1.5b....come on now....admit it....not a small sum. It might be while before President Obama gets his train ride and a chance to pull the whistle rope to make high speed train's whistle blow.

The funny thing is.....know who the prime contractors of the high speed project is? Pretty sure that the Japanese won the contract for the project. At least that is the rumor around here. Only in America.......

If so....much of the FED and State and local money are headed to the land of the rising Sun.

The country is right-center. But President Obama is not centre-right.

He tried to go center from the left in the State of the Union as I saw it. Tried to bring REP into supporting his programs. Cross the aisle cooperation and voting.

That the REP know if they stay a block, Health Care dies. As one REP said much earlier in the debate. "Health care could become Obama's Waterloo." If they stay solid as a block, it is his Waterloo.

With respect ttom 500, your President is NOT a left-winger (common mis-representation by CNN, FOX, Newsweek & Time Magazine) He may be liberal but was/never left-wing, by the American spectrum he's mistaken as 'socialist' yet his politics are firmly within the capitalist 'free' market structure like New Labour in Britain. If ya don't believe me check the accurate go to the US Presidential Election 2008

From 2003 to 2007 he took liberal positions but still safely inside the private-profit limit. The only difference is he supports more limits on un-controlled large companies. His health-care reforms may increase taxes for everyone but it still wouldn't the much-feared, frightening 'cradle-to-grave' safety net in some European states.

Oh the 10years old Frank Marshall myth, if you read both Obama's books & his critics reports, the facts remain While he thought that Marshall was a nice old radical to admire his courage, Obama worked on a Chicago community project with Bill Ayers AND Republican politicians, Obama disowned both Marshall & Reverend Wright's radical views.

Explain to me then...how one of his earliest mentors was a well known Black Panther. That when he was a teen in Hawaii. Please explain to me why he such difficulty severing with REV. Wright, Bill Ayers, and Father Phelfger during the campaign. How he would employ Van Jones after the election.

To understand this, some knowledge about American politics and civil rights movement histories in the US is needed. During the Civil Right movement period of the 1960-70. There were actually two different movements on going. One lead by Martin Luther King, was non violent and near centrist in its approach. The other led by Malcom X, was leftist and radical. It could and did support violence. Bill Ayers is of this movement. Jones, Wright, and Phelfger likely are.

President Obama's political lineage comes from the later. Over the years has President Obama has reshaped his political ideology? Yes. Even today that is ongoing. The State of the Union was surely a move to the middle for him. But MLK, I suggest would have little contact with Wright, Ayers, Resko, Phelfger, or Jones. President Obama has had a long relationships with them all. The reason that MLK would not have a relationship with them.....they would advocated violence and/or disrespect of the Country as a means.

You can support capitolism and still be a leftist. It is an error to to think that they are total opposites. Even in her hay day, Communist Russia still had money, goods and items were still purchased. Is President Obama as hard a leftist as Che or Malcom X? No. He is far from their extreme positions in the left.

Americans that have lived in the country during the days of the Civil Rights understand these two movements. We watched them unfold and attempt various reconciliations and debate their ideological differences. So today a clean distinction is difficult.

A recent Obama quotes on MLK to show this.

On 1/19/2009 Presdient Obama said this regarding MLK.

"Dr. Martin Luther King's was a life lived in loving service to others. We honor that legacy, it is not a day to pause and reflect, but a day to act. Today ordinary citizens will gather across the country to participate in the more than eleven thousand events they've created using USAservice.org. And I ask the American people to turn today's efforts into an ongoing commitment to enrich the lives of others in their communities, their cities and country."

That is centrist and very positive statement.

But add that up with what liberal and leftist scholar Cornell West says. Cornell West says this on MLK day.

"I don't want to sanitize Martin Luther King. I don't know about you, but I don't even mention his name without shivering and shuddering." Then he went on to talk about President Obama by saying this. "Even with your foot on break, there is to many brothers and sisters under the bus. Were is the talk about proverty? We got to protect him and respect him, but we also got to correct him if the legacy of Martin Luther King is to stay alive."

West's use of "brother and sisters' and 'being tossed under the bus'...goes back to Malcom-X lineage of Civil rights movements ideology. Today, both Civil Rights movements lay claim to MLK.
Van Jones was not in his administration solely to make green jobs.
Van Jones was in his administration to see left and liberal agendas were advanced.

Sorry i couldn't vote in your poll. Didn't see an answer that would suit me. I just clicked on your poll because of the title.. and much like the current bill being debated in congress it was misnamed. That thing has nothing to do with healhcare.. it should of been named "mandatory forcing of people to buy something they never wanted and may never use bill from private companies or go to jail and pay fines for not doing so and we'll steal all your money either way bill"

I'm glad you're so enthusiastic about government forcing people to buy insurance though. Even though that has absolutely nothing to do with reforming the healtcare system we currently have. Forcing people into something that dosen't work and just multiplying the failures and waste of a corrupt system isn't something i'd be very happy about.

I'll be glad when it's finally defeated.. but then again you know politicians.. they'll just do it again and again and again untill they can get their yes vote.

Remember I said that the REP would press for line item veto with President Obama?

Today, President Obama had a face to face with REP leaders. Apparently a testy one at times. And the REP told him they would support line item veto. To which President Obama demurred (articles term) to say...billionaires don't need tax cuts.

See?

One side wants to reduce gov't and gov't spending. The other side wants increases tax income coming in to spend. It is that simple.

So the tug or war on the budget will continue....a dead locked Washington will continue....and in the end the American people get the short shafted of a working modern gov't.

In his State of the Union, President Obama asked that countries exports be DOUBLED (in both food and equipment exports). He also endorsed off shore drilling and assigning of off shore oil rights.
He does not mind those billionaires exporting products and food, he just does not want them to make so much money off doing so.

But they are the ones taking the risk....of that corp. money with that off shore oil rig....or that large farm and food processing facility. Not the FED gov't or those the it would give the money to in gov't benefits from these taxes.

Also President Obama chided the Supreme Court, on its ruling on corp and union funding of elections. To the Supreme Court it was a question of freedom of speech. President Obama does not mind big checks being signed, as long as they have FED Gov't on the check and his signature. But a Corp or a Union to sign a big check to support a canidate...what a crime. SEIU supported President Obama's to the tune of $13.5m.

President Obama just got into the arm business. He plans a $6+b weapons deal with Taiwan. The Chinese are not going to like this. Man, I bet we have some upset Red Chinese, that are going to put breaks on the two nuclear coliations in regards to NKorea and Iran. What did you say th interest rate on those Chinese loans to the government were? they are now 1 point higher today!!

On the home front, Several new sites in New England are being considered for SMK trial. I have an idea. We just made a old air- craft carrier a museum. We float it out to mid Atlantic,
have the trials there. If convicted, we make it a prison. If sentenced to death, we force them to walk the gang blank with a junck of 9/11 debrie tied to them.

Speaking of 9/11 debrie. They just uncovered another large section of 9/11 debrie that had yet to be searched for human remains. Yep, not the first time. They plan to search it this summer.

Here is a little trivia that will gain you drink at your local pub or bar.

President Obama and Senator Brown....yes the same Senator Brown that is REP and won the MA election......are......related. This according to a genealogist that says they are 10th cousins.

Seems that President Obama's mother and Sen Brown mother's both descend from one, Richard Singletary, of Haverhill, MA. He passed in 1687 at the age of 102.

It is a small small world indeed......
