bodleing: I'd rather go from personal experience. I and most people I know have used cannabis since the sixties. I have yet to come across anyone who has suffered any of the above. On the other hand I have known many people who's lives have been wrecked or even terminated by the excessive use of alcohol.

Yes, I've also tried it. It was quite commonly used when I was a teen and I have in fact seen how long-term usage affected a number of my friends from Durban. Perhaps our marijuana is stronger than yours???!!! Are you talking about occasional use or excessive use btw?

I find this whole issue hard to be objective about.
My daughter's father used a number of psychoactive substances, some like crack that were physiologically addictive and some like marijuana, that weren't.
Crack heads are a nightmare, so some of my judgement is clouded by this, but marijuana use had some similarities, in as much as it was a priority over and above anything else.
(He did get off the crack, so my hat off to him for that).
It took me a number of years to work out that the reason why my daughter was coming home in such a state after access visits, was because he was smoking skunk so heavily in front of her. It had a negative impact on her education, it made it very difficult to identify real problems that she was having with dyslexia and other specific learning disabilities and it had a massive psychological impact on her because she was always in trouble for lack of concentration.
My initial response when I worked out what was going on, was to request that he not smoke in her presence and to wait until she'd gone to bed. It ended after 18 months of battle in the family courts with him saying he didn't want anything to do with her any more.
So, from what I've seen marijuana can be equally as destructive when misused as alcohol. It strikes me that those that are pro tend to highlight the good side, those that are against, do the reverse, when neither is the whole truth.
I also think that for as long as it is illegal, the full truth and complete education will not be readily available for people to make informed choices.
My parents allowed it in the house when my step brother was injured. It helped with his spasms. I have had more contact highs than smoking. My sister left some medical stuff at my house just in case. I have taken a puff here and there. It seems to make me busy. Wine puts me to sleep and smoke helps me move fast. I do see the uses for it. My choice of drugs.

A partner used to use it, I did not mind providing it was only light usage. Smoking has never appealed to me, so I've never used it.
Just this week I have been in contact with another ex, both his sons started young, there were dealers at the school gates. He tried really hard to get them off it, but eventually gave up, after they would continually 'sell' items from the house to buy more.
The elder son is now schizophrenic, and the younger one died six weeks ago from a drug overdose.
I do think some people are more at risk of mental problems, and that risk seems higher the younger the usage starts. I think heavy usage is bad, the same way that heavy alcohol usage is bad. I'm not sure whether it should be legal or not, as the same arguments can be made about normal tobacco and alcohol. I do think those who find it theraputic for their illnesses should be able to use it. I would like to see campaigns to try and stop youngsters using it, but the current laws on tobacco and alcohol seem ineffective, so I'm not convinced that would work either.

thanks for sharing those great posts!
I've had a dozen weed - induced psychotic episodes and the mental ward was full of others unwilling to accept that we were unable to handle smoking every now and then a joint. I've been a heavy heroine and cocaine junkie for 12 years, no harm to my mental state and I was for most of the time able to function completely "normal" while at other times it was all about plain surviving on the streets. I'm completely clean now since 10 years and the worst drug to get off where the cigarettes!
I personal feel that any drugs, incl cigarettes and alcohol are keeping us disconnected from ourselves and others. Every drug user is unconscious and what does it matter whether he does it legal or illegal? Fact is he's unconscious. This is without a doubt something that has to be EXPERIENCED so most people on here wont be able to relate to this statement. I'm convinced it needs drug free parents to raise children who'll have the self love and self respect to never be depending on anything outside themselves. Children that want to be experience life wide awake and not hanging around as a sleep walker and watching life from the sidelines.
Drugs to different things to different people at different times but they'll never facilitate development. JMPF
