Aisle in bus, window in flight better if it's near emergency exit, they say people who sit there have some duties if the plane falls but I would do none of those duties and try to save my own life
When flying,I always used to prefer the left-hand front (command) seat, but as I'm no longer a licensed pilot, nowadays I prefer a seat towards the rear, and close to an emergency exit. Not that I don't trust the younger pilots of course, but just in case...

That happened to me on a flight recently, they sat me next to two doctors at the front of the plane and asked if I would help if there was an emergency - Id never heard of it before

Trish Airline policy tries to put fit young men next to Exits as they are counted on to help in case of Emergencies...I always made sure I had a chance of showing my RAF ID card when checking in (always early) and regularly got upgraded to first or business class at the exit, at worst the exit over the wing with lots of leg room....Best one Emirates to Perth Australia business class all the way out comfort
As someone who has been regularly using buses and planes for many years I would now prefer not to have anybody sitting next to me, for a variety of reasons actually some not so funny! so an empty or near empty bus or plane is heaven and I can sit next to the window which I also prefer.
If my flight is full then I go for the aisle, that way I can get out of my seat without bothering the person next to me. As for the bus, well my journeys are relatively short generally so if there are few seats vacant I stand.
Sides or sitting near emergency exits doesn´t bother me so that´s not an issue, and being short I don´t need the extra leg room.
I love flying and using public transport, it´s just the other passengers I´m not so keen on.

The doctors were even older than me, a married Hindu couple and they were delightful company on an 8 hr flight. We knew all about each others families and histories by the time we got there - half of the joy of traveling in my mind is the chance encounters.
I was once passing through Birmingham train station and needed ciggies while waiting for my connection so I headed out of the station to find some - Id just got to the bottom of a giant staircase when round the top bit came the most colourful Rastafarian you have ever seen, his amazing features stood out brilliantly against the Rasta colours and for some reason I just stood there and grinned, he grinned too, we didnt share a single word but it was one of the most pleasant grins of my whole life for some obscure reason
