The relationship between a cult & its members is actually symbiotic & quite beneficial for certain types of personalities, Precious.

The prerequisite for being susceptible to the allure of a cult is that the individual has experienced profound frustration living an autonomous life. He/she seeks to lose his/her individuality by being assimilated into something larger than him/herself.

This may be seen as redeeming an otherwise mis-spent life.

Yep, Precious, that's a very effective technique for controlling the masses.
Get them to identify themselves entirety by their assimilation into the group & then keep them in line with the threat of cutting them off from the group.

At that point it is very akin to killing them.

Threat of expulsion from the Party kept many old Communists in line...and willing...even eager...to do ever more extreme things the Party demanded.

Very likely it is also motivating the current wave of ever more maniacal acts being performed by ISIS/The Muslim Brotherhood.

Very short & to the point, it describes cults/mass movements, their similarities, how they attract a following...and the characteristics of people drawn to them.
