Are cults wrong? Some of them yes, but just about every popular movement was at one time regarded as a 'cult'.
Modern Christianity (that is defined as following Jesus) began as a 'cult'.
There are certain characteristics that many movements have. The people that are drawn to them do so out of many different psychological phenomena. Some, like myself, were just raised in them, and then it takes a huge amount of effort to retrain oneself to escape them.
But not everything that is mainstream is sane, or good.
Sometimes those living in recognised 'cults' are happier than those living in 'normal society'.
Each to their own.
That is what the documentary shows...Dangerous Devotions is the title...it is a good watch and helps people understand how cults are formed/originated and why others are drawn to it...

Very short & to the point, it describes cults/mass movements, their similarities, how they attract a following...and the characteristics of people drawn to them.

The cult or organization may start out benign (good intentions) but the leaders may in fact have other visions for its flock that are less than savory...as explained by an ex member and survivor of Jonestown...

Yep, Precious, that's a very effective technique for controlling the masses.
Get them to identify themselves entirety by their assimilation into the group & then keep them in line with the threat of cutting them off from the group.
At that point it is very akin to killing them.
Threat of expulsion from the Party kept many old Communists in line...and willing...even eager...to do ever more extreme things the Party demanded.
Very likely it is also motivating the current wave of ever more maniacal acts being performed by ISIS/The Muslim Brotherhood.
It is a fine line...controlling leadership and fear of excommunication...fear based and very effective...ISIL a cult?...seems like it...
And, of course, their people are willing to inflict it...lest they appear apostate!

I thought this might pique interest...it seems rather surreal that so many are affected by cults/governments or whatever given name of these organizations...who have vested interest in harming their members...I am shocked what I have learned through this documentary...
