The question of so few Gingers appears on Yahoo answers.
The answers seem, to me, to be rather unsatisfactory.
> Fair skin is an adaptation to Northern conditions, as it allows for more efficient production of Vitamin D. > Red hair is a recessive trait.
Nothing new with either of those. In fact, I'd say they are pretty much non-answers.
If Ginger were a relatively recent mutation, it might be that Gingers got a late start and are still "catching up".
However, Ginger is recorded going back to antiquity. There is also evidence of Ginger predating written history. It seems that would be plenty of time for Ginger to become as prevalent as other recessive, but relatively common, traits such as blue eyes, blonde hair, or.straight hair.
Go figure.
Hmmmm...Perhaps I should apply for a grant to study it.
Sooo, Wallops. Dad was Ginger? Does that make you a ...crypto-Ginger?
Some info sources do include such folks...Those carrying the Ginger gene, but not showing much of the traits. That raises the whole Ginger population to nearly 5% of the world population!
My son's kinda like that. Takes more after his Italian mom. HOWEVER...hair has red highlights & his beard is definitely Ginger.
So we let him celebrate Redhead Days right along with daughter & me.
Ginger Vikings...I should say so! Eric the Red, for example.
Musky, you mention the sun on red hair. Yes. Rose is an "Autumn". If the sun hits her just right, it'll show the whole spectrum. It's noteworthy...hair DYED red will not have that same effect.
RE: The Hunter
Don't forget the fishers...seafood chowder is good, too!
