My personal answer? In simple terms: comfort and fear of death. Most people are unable to cope with the fact that their lives has no purpose and ends with death. Additionally, they get a feeling of comfort and being cared for by someone who watches over them. Consequently, many people become "more religious" during times of hardship when they feel left alone (e.g., "Dear God, I will go to church more often if you help me out of this.").
It's an old chestnut, but I think you have it one.
Sometimes, it takes a statement of fact to bring home reality.
If anything, I am inclined towards Buddhism, which denies the existence of an omnipotent creator and combines humanitarian values without the blind faith of organised religious belief.
