BMW Sauber’s Robert Kubica has been airlifted to hospital in Montreal for further checks after crashing heavily during Sunday’s Canadian Grand Prix.
Kubica left the track at speed on the run down to the hairpin, after appearing to make contact with the rear of a Toyota. The BMW Sauber became airborne, hitting a wall in the centre of circuit, before rolling to halt at the hairpin entry, with little more than its monocoque intact.
Kubica was quickly extracted from the car and transferred to the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve’s medical centre, where he was able to speak with his manager, who was hopeful that the Pole had not sustained any serious injuries. He was then airlifted to hospital in the medical helicopter.
