I don't mind them selling Pepsi and Coke as well as RC. That's fine. It's corporation exclusion practices that piss me off. I want my options, and I'm willing to exercise my economic power to ensure I have those options.
I think it has changed people yes. I think its different for everyone however. I think that the first time I took the plunge and move across country I did not have a realistic idea of the challenges involved.
I think this time, as my sweetie and I take our time to get to know each others minds in an honest and open manner, and don't rush to any meeting, let alone permanent relocation, but having definite concrete plans for that meeting and eventual ideas for that permanent step, I think we're more capable of doing this realistically rather than if I hadn't had that experience of pure foolishness.
This can be done people, but it has to be done in the real world. This site, or any other, is just a tool, and thus is value neutral. Its how you use it, and what your intentions are, and how honest you can be with yourself and others, that ultimately dictate how successful its going to be. Love isn't magic. It's frigging work, and some of the hardest work, at times.
I believe America to be one of the most dynamic nations in the world, both industrially and ideologically. This hasn't changed, just the vectors have changed. If America takes on a new thrust culturally, it must be remembered that as a nation, and thus, as a culture, we are still a teenager, and as such, subject to the unbearable temptation of the latest fad.
Pendulums swing, but they always end up right back in the middle.
Why should I work for $60K when I could gross $150K doing the same job? Because they have engineered volume distribution trade agreements with China that essentially force me to work for them rather than myself.
Just one for instance. And with all due respect. Not everybody wants to work for themselves agreed. But for people who do, like myself, I would provide stable, locally profitable jobs for those same people. But I can't compete against a one-sided volume-distribution trade conspiracy.
Greed is bipartisan. They're all crooks, and we get screwed either way. If you're sane, you're capable of flying another mission. But if you're willing to fly another mission, you are not sane. Willing and capable are two different things.
Because this is a serious topic, I tend to think humor is more in order than ever, rusty. We can't all agree on it, I'm sure. But I believe everything, minus all the moral rhetoric, is socio-economically driven in the world. If you follow the money, you will find the perpetrators of some of the biggest con-jobs in the world.
Not as many people realize this as much as they should, or think about it for that matter, but capitalism IS Democracy in its purest form. Every dollar you spend, every good or service you buy, is a choice, and opinion.
A vote.
Sure, we pay a little less at Walmart, yes. We get great deals. Isn't life wonderful? But by buying at Walmart (or any other corporation, for that matter. I'm just using them as an example, specifically because I have an axe to grind with Chinese merchandise ) we tacitly agree with everything they stand for. We vote, we empower, we create, all through our choice in purchases.
Now, that's fine. I'm not going to get down on you for buying your latest kiddie pool at roll-back prices. I just want you to realize that our country is the way it is, because of your choices.
Realized, informed, unrealized, uninformed, or whatever, you are responsible for your choices. Ignorance is not a defense in the law. And convenience or thrift is not an excuse for exercising your economic vote in an uninformed manner, and then complaining about the consequences as if you had nothing to do with it. We are all responsible, for the mess, and for its cleanup.
Go out and vote. Every day, and in every way. But do it with your children in mind, not your own convenience. Otherwise, there will be no tomorrow, no proud nation of free individuals. There will be mindless and unjustified consumption for the sake of the profit of the very few, with little or no ethical or moral value to our society left that is not force-fed to us by a complicit media.
For me, no. I want to get to know a person on the first date. I can't even know what kind of music she likes yet, so a concert based on no prior knowledge of her musical tastes? Bad first impression. Arrogant.
I suggest coffee, a walk, maybe a trip to a bookstore to talk about similar aesthetic tastes, find common intellectual and emotional ground to build from.
As a second or third date, after you've established this aesthetic common ground, by all means. But first date? Bad idea, IMO.
When I look into the abyss, I see Austen Powers. When I look into the abyss, I see George Bush ducking. I put the two together. I roll around on the floor barely able to breathe...
I understand your feelings. I felt like I was in enemy territory on the whole while in Kentucky. That did not excuse me from having respect for the people who's territory it is however, or the humility to understand that I was a visitor and did not understand the rich complexity of their lifestyle and attitudes. Not all of them were closed to rational discussion, especially in a college town.
If we expect to sway people of opposing opinions, we had best walk a line of policy and not personal attacks. I have made it my creed to do so. You cannot make a point of blame if you have three fingers pointing back at you. The blame game is ineffective if you are casting the first guilty stone.

Doves and magpies Two interloping crows A master augury The oracle only knows.
Divination, the I Ching on wing, Augury of the Ancients In poetry they sing.
An auspicious omen Twelve doves at flight Random bird patterns Keep the fear of night Away from our hearts Atavistic, free of blight, The whole is more than parts.

As much as I appreciate your opinion Mars, please refrain from the ad hominem. I spent a good deal of time in Lexington, Kentucky at the University and you are guilty of the same generalizations in this post. There are some very intelligent people in Kentucky and its not nice to lump people together based on their region.
