If I may tell - A Fighter Pilot like three of my relations were in WW2.
But as my higher maths wasn't top hole, I had to settle for being an ERK in Trade group 1 - Engine and Airframe fitters - It is the highest ground trade and we are in charge of the aircraft on the ground, until the jockeys drive 'em on the perimeter track.
I was an Engine fitter but that training and the supplemental qualifications I educated myself to while in there, gave me the grounding for a career in Mechanical engineering and music, all my life after I came out.
My parents could not have afforded an apprenticeship outside the service and were not all that keen on what I did either.
