That is a valid question and concern. I feel the same way. No offense to anyone but I probably wouldn't meet someone in person from another country. It's only because of the distance.
My replies are mostly from people here in the states. I do get things from Europe and beyond but I only chat with folks who are here. That's just me tho - may not be the same bowl of ice cream for someone else...
In this situation, If it were me, I would work on getting my own place. But before I did that, I would make a decision on the whole idea of moving and getting the old job back. After all of that is settled, I would start doing things for myself, including paying down the debt.
Dude, think about yourself and what you need and want. Your worth it. Sure, you had some bad stuff happen to you. We all have. Pick yourself up and move on. You will be OK.
I don't know if I "believe in" internet dating but anything is possible. I haven't found my special someone yet but there are a lot of really nice people here. The success stories gives me hope.

Stuck in a rut and hate the feeling....although in reality, the rut isn't so bad
