It never hurts to make more friends. Certainly when they live in other countries. As to starting relationships with them - if I can't see myself going to that country even to visit, then I tell them so. Sometimes even out of the province (in Canada) for some could be a challenge but at least if they're on the same continent there is a chance you could meet up somewhere.
There is nothing frightening about this. It is risky opening your heart to someone, you do stand a chance of being hurt. Some can be frightened of being hurt.
He actually came looking for me to talk to when he was upset and going through a difficult time with an ex-girlfriend. He said he knew I would hear him out, not place judgement and be honest with him.
Can't say that I'm scared of long distance love - and yes it can be a good test of how much he wants me. But it would likely at some point involve one of us moving - I'm not sure I would be willing to and I'm not sure it would be fair to 'expect' him to.
Nothing is completely out of the question though. If I found someone that really made me pay attention but who lived a distance away from me, I would have to consider it.
