Well your house is exempt from building regs unless substantial works were carried out since 1992/1997/2006 the owner would need to have complied with varying degrees of regs applicable depending on the dates if any. Battery ones would suffice but i d advise against them.... lets say if its 2 storey they wouldnt be interconnected so if a fire started downstairs at night its effects would have to be felt upstairs before the alarm near you would sound.... Its likely in old houses that windows might not have suitably sized openings to get out so the right thing to do is wire up the detectors so that if one goes off they all go off to give earliest possible warning given the age of the house. Under the regs referred to for letting properties it looks like one needs to be wired but I havent dealt with those
When was house built? Its a requirement of building regulations that detectors are fitted, heat in kitchen, smoke in halls and landings and rooms containing fire risk now and they have to be connected to mains for power and have battery back up. A battery only one was ok before late 90s.

Unfortunately it took the tragedy of the "Stardust" to waken this country up to building standards so it has already happened. Not going to discuss that on a public forum as theres no closure there yet for people who have lost loved ones ...but if you re ever having a pint with a fire officer ....
There are ways out of this in the future. For example, the phasing in of proper installation, recording and certification of septic tank / treatment unit and percolation areas. This is under way and i m sure it can be tweaked to do a similar certification process for a building.
Lets go back a step. This building needed a fire safety cert prior to a block being laid. That means that a full set of drawings and other paperwork displaying exactly how the building would be built and all fire protection details outlined thereon would have been submitted to the fire dept of the council. We can take it that these drawings were correct or a fire cert would not have been granted therefore we would nt ever have had a Priory Hall in the first place. The design therefore was probably correct so it was either through short cuts being taken , a total breakdown in communication or total ignorance and proper detail not being followed that has left them where they are. Reference was made to 'inner rooms' on liveline when this story broke, if such rooms are not in compliance it means that plans were not followed and if these rooms appeared suddenly they simply shouldnt have. With regard to fire spread in cavities the barrier locations should havve been shown on drawings for the fire cert app. These barriers confine fire and smoke to the building envelope of each apartment and prevent it spreading to neighbouring apartments via concealed spaces. This appears to be the major defect in that block. Some people refer to a lack of building standards. That is simply not the case. They re here since 1992 and are being updated all the time. They are largely based on the English model and are every bit as good. Where the link on the chain is broken is enforcement. Merely 10% or so are inspected by local authority. Remainder is self regulation. Maybe the LA should be giving more thought to the type of building they choose for inspection. Fire officers have no obligation to visit a site as part of the fire safety cert process normally.
Ok ...sorry had to go in middle of all that. I ll try and clear up a few issues left hanging there. Firstly, i m not saying there was a conspiracy, was referring to the fact that each purchaser would have had a solicitor acting for them and normally an engineer, architect or surveyor would have been asked to inspect the apartment before purchase. The banks would also have requested a survey. That means that potentially a lot of professionals dealt with this building. Unfortunately a lot of the work may have been covered up at that stage so cavity barriers and the like to stop firespread wouldnt be visable anyway.
There are a lot more to be hung out to dry on this one ...apart from the so called developer ..each one of them apartments was signed off ....and these are supposed to be professionals ...best case scenario is new beginning find a way of voiding all contracts associated with this and leave him with all the mess
