Just a word to the wise ....anyone daft enough to take up that offer, bring no valuables. Was chatting a lady on that fishy site and she was victim of a bloke setting up dates from that site to rob them.
Only spotted this thread now Anne, how old is your house, if it was new when you moved in and things were done right there shouldnt be a huge problem with your insulation, though with speculative building the minimum requirement was all that was adhered to. Even that has been improved upon recently. I ve been specifying higher thicknesses of attic insul and also insul backed slabs to exterior walls for years now which is only way to go. A lot of what you need has been said already, start with a survey by a BER assessor, thermal imaging and air tightness are important, though an experienced assessor worth his salt should be able to ttell you a lot by a visual examination. You can take it the cavities will need pumping, an extra layer of insul in attic depending on whats there, get all the seals checked around openings in windows and doors, anywhere you ve got pipes going through an outside wall make sure its sealed properly....you d be surprised at what i ve found while snagging!!! There should be controls on your heatng system as well, assessor should be able to tell you whats missing by just looking. Not a whole lot more you can do without going to a lot of expense and pulling the place assunder. Retro fitting insul inside or outside would do more for heat loss but where do you stop with budget, payback and upheaval.
Simple....just dont allow them pay cash, everyone has a bank, post office or credit union account, and if not, the bank branch on which the cheque is drawn on can cash it. Same for scrap dealers. And copies of proof of ID and address to be kept
