Haiku

Love's procession high
the carnival train returns
turning of the wheel

Sketching in the dust
mountains and rivers abound
two birds on a stone

Meadows in the spring
a golden hour of blossom
fragrance on the wind

Love and the night

In the rhythm of the universe, the night unfolds,
A tapestry of stars, a story to be told.
Its celestial ballet, a grand choreography,
Passion's dance of darkness, a divine symphony.

In depths of indigo, secrets are kept,
As Luna's soft glow, our dreams are swept.
Her silver beams, like whispers of desire,
Caress the earth, igniting love's own fire.

The night sky, a canvas, painted with grace,
Galaxies swirl, a cosmic embrace.
In every twinkle, a lover's vow,
With each pulsar's beat, passions avow.

The moon, a luminary, in love's embrace,
An eternal witness, to each heart's chase.
Its crescent smile, a lover's art,
A beacon guiding, from the start.

Beneath the night's veil, emotions bloom,
In the shadows cast, hearts find room.
With gentle sighs, the zephyrs play,
As night unveils its mystique display.

The universe's rhythm, a lover's plea,
In every quasar's flash, a mystery.
The passion of night, an enigmatic spell,
In cosmic silence, hearts compel.

So let us dance, beneath the stars,
In night's sweet serenade, no bars.
Embrace the universe's grace,
And let love's rhythm find its place.

I am the Sphinx

Is it time for seasonal reflection?
but no not on this day
I am the Sphinx in the desert
facing the ever sun
with beauty in the sands
so they say, but for me
a rogue on the road
I have no pure thoughts
to give elegance to a message
the blue winds blow through me
shallow and with contempt
wisped away as the days
shorten to fine blades
whirling laterally
until up on the heath
creatures move in the hollow silence

Full moon over Opotiki

And crabs
out on the flats
gazing, dipping, flittering under the gathering stars
water coils
laughter from the shore

After the war

Chopin from white ivory

skills of the master player

on this deeply polished piano

and from the verandah

they all enter elegantly

women in hats

men in suits

stripes are the order

champagne quaffed

from flute glasses

and the laughter

goes up and down the hallways

as if the war had never been

A rolling Reverend

To reclaim God under a deep black sky
in these times the heavens may shake
keep one hand on the wheel
the other on the crucifix brother
a rolling Reverend
into the night we drive
sing, sing Hallelujah
to all the earthly creatures
camped under a full moon
O be wise and watchful
the Devil may take his care here
yes he may loiter in these dark lands
but freeze him out my brothers
like the church on a hill
be steadfast and true
and not bent and deceived
yes we go down into the lands
of the downtrodden and repentant
to bring the light
bring the light
bring the light

Lemon tea for Derek

Blatant partisanship
a loaded conversation
well howl at the moon
you dogs in packs
working with these critics
its four to one
you'll never get refuge
let them go down
like an old ship creaking
the sun will rise
for at the diplomat dinner
its lemon tea for Derek
and a shot at the moon

Big Horse Heart

Big horse heart
is sure pumping
oxygen deprivation
at 20,000 feet
breathing from the cylinder
icepick in hand
clouds far down beneath
sun on the rockfall ahead
I choose this life
to breathe hard is to compete
nature sets the board
we move the pieces
going all out now
assault on the peak
the pinnacle glowing
in the morning rays
we radio to base
summited!

The Day

Do not give up on the day
even when it is time for sleep
do not give up on the day
though the light dims
and your eyes close in pauses
let a man be ready
to shake back the night
do not give up on the day
if the sun sinks behind the hedgerow
and your plight makes you weary
still, still, do not give up on the day

Mama's all knowin'

Pure heart mechanical blues
there's a sax playing on the ridge
it rained all night in Kentucky

There's shoe-shine folklore
and western desert chords
struck in 4:4
I tell you this
when the dice roll
Mama's all knowin'
trumpet blowin'
good as a circus phenomenon

Pure heart mechanical blues
there's a sax playing on the ridge
it rained all night in Kentucky

Love's petals

in fields of indigo rain
like a storm up on the mountain

Lord let it rain

Whipping the master rites
still lightning high
unabashed solo
red freedom sky

Tamed by a jaguar
down on the plain
westerly wallow
the fevers engrained

When all thoughts of mercy
in deep foreign soil
ran hard in the corners
the sword and the foil

Served up like soup
the neighbor's disdain
damn with the fallout
Lord let it rain
