Horse hearted

yellow excess
rolling Pirelli
needle sharp ninety
red zone
mirror finished
leather Italia
street theatred
murcielago
downshift
downshift
chassis warp
corner flow
accelerate out
horse hearted
horse hearted

Candy Cruiser

'69 Camaro
I'm working the block
candy cruiser
Glock under lock
these streets is hard
oil and cement
you gonna cross me
dog you better repent
red-haired and heels
she doing my deals
one tight b*tch
loyalty appeals
gonna branch out
get another city down
plan to franchise
I ain't no local clown
still I'm tiring of the game
tiring of the hate
500 G in the bank
to that I can relate
need a penthouse in the country
need some mountain air
the champagne sipping redhead
won't wait another year

Juju

they used to bang it
working the corn at all hours
it rippled through the neighbouring walls
so even the dogs couldn't sleep
now they are gone
I lie awake at night
and all I can hear
are the juju chants of a Belgian sausage-maker

Turning the ash

In the absence of your love
rigid fortune given its due
for now we lack the mettle
to slip the prow
into the citrus night
the vessel no longer sure
of its destination
and plagued with weakness
as time would have it

I recall a time
when the bedpost rang
and fresh were the garlands
in the morning spirit
and lifting with the dew
we would walk the bay
'til the light
played out
and the evening
would have us
no more

Yet let us not swallow defeat
my love
tied as it always will be
as a shadow
turn the ash
turn until
the stem is fresh
reaching upward
ready to embrace
new summer song

Live from Kranji

A leisure suit is no defence
against the 35C
its a tight hussle
weather and horsemen
the game goes on

skeletal companions
smoking Marlboro
deep in the form
Malay Malay
horse lore in the haze

I move to the English lounge
gratifyingly stand-offish
public school accent
all taken with aplomb
mahogany boardrooms

I'm down 50 by the 5th
El Dorado's in the pocket
burst from the turn
commanding adrenaline
home for a 100

Singapore nights
harbour-side towers
champagne club
tall balconies
hewn from the jungle

Captain Neon

Captain Neon
the last
leather man
of a lost
highway patrol
Nixon boy
flexed glove
lizard shades
body sure
law enforcement

cold motorway dawn

serpentine blue

from ridge to sea
sure drift of gulls
sea pilots
submarine view

a harlots nest
on a blood ocean
did you find me
valentine true

shoreline escape
to the wind
are we rising
serpentine blue

warm river winds
from the valleys
that knew us
crystalline hue

Mosquito Coast

The Indians thought they had it most
the English brought them tea and toast
the Spanish weren't a worthy host
the Father, Son and Holy Ghost
the airline tickets in the post
the weathers fine you have to boast
but its hard to find a Sunday roast
if your chips are down on the Mosquito Coast

The ghost of Chairman Mao

I was running in Majorca
at some indecent hour
when in the road
I came upon
the ghost of Chairman Mao

The acrylic shorted stalker
stopped me with a bow
I kneed him in the bollock zone
the ghost of Chairman Mao

He didn't take it kindly
a spectral sort of sour
then dropped me with a Kung Fu leap
the ghost of Chairman Mao

I hiked it down an alleyway
but with supernatural power
he relieved me of my running shorts
the ghost of Chairman Mao

So take it as a warning
as a warning take it now
its best to raise a platitude
if you meet the ghost of Chairman Mao

Poetry Drill with the Sarge

"Now Listen Up! you maggots
you pimple-arsed poetry wannabe's
sitting there in your chocolate sprinkled candy cone bedrooms
writing about how your boyfriend doesn't call
or By the light of the Silvery Moon,
Let me tell you that's all bullshit, Bull Shit!
I want you to write like a flare just ripped open the northern sky
there's enemy fire from the ridge
and you're so far down in the rocks
you're sucking in the dust of the afterlife.
Do you understand me?"
"Yes Drill Sergeant"
"I want you to write it pierced and thorned
and with every aching sinew I can taste
the road to deliverance.
Do you understand me?"
"Yes Drill Sergeant"
"DO YOU UNDERSTAND ME?"
"YES DRILL SERGEANT"
"Now write something that dignifies your putrid existence,
I want your mothers smiling with every waking sunrise"
"Yes Drill Sergeant"
