Flies and Spiders

I think flies prefer being outside. When they come inside most of their efforts seem directed towards getting back out again. It is strange how they easily spot an open window on the way in, yet are oblivious to it as a means of exit. It matters little how much one tries to show them the way out, they simply refuse to be assisted. Besides beating themselves against the panes of open windows, flies like to walk round the rims of cups, and the edges of plates, or trample all over bread boards. They seem to know all the places you would least like them to go.

I can only put up with a fly in the room for so long, and when it refuses to leave of its own accord, despite not wanting to be there in the first place, measures must be taken. A swipe from a damp dishcloth at lightning speed would be a quick solution to the problem, you would think. And that is what I always do think, despite knowing from experience that there is no justification for thinking it. I don’t know how many times I have been convinced of a direct hit, and even started searching for the body, only to hear a buzz on the other side of the room where a little black dot is whizzing round the light bulb. While the first strike is always executed with patience and stealth, wild thrashing usually follows.

I am slumped, exhausted and sweating in my chair, watching the little bastard running up the fridge door. Even then, despite overflowing with animosity towards the tiny rascal, I would rather not kill it. Why can’t it just do the decent thing and leave?

While flies make no effort to conceal their presence, spiders, by contrast, prefer to stay out of sight. Usually, I only spot one when I turn on the light and there is a gigantic specimen right in the middle of the wall. Whenever they are confronted they head for the nearest dark crevice, rather than the light. That makes them come across as sinister. Flies annoy me, but spiders worry me. I’m fine with the small ones, it’s the big ones I’m not keen on. While a big spider may only have a body the size of a peanut, it has legs half the length of a cocktail stick, and that is what creates the impression of size.

A completely different approach is needed for dealing with spiders. I keep two empty yogurt cartons at the ready for catching them, one upstairs and one downstairs. My method is to put the yogurt carton over the spider, slide a piece of card underneath it, and then tip the spider out into the garden. The bigger the spider, the more nerve racking I find the operation. The spider will bolt as soon as it sees the carton coming, so speed is of the essence. I do not want to trap its legs, nor do I want my hand to be any closer to it than it has to be, so a certain amount of speed has to be sacrificed in favour of accuracy. It may sound straight forward, but spiders do not go gentle into that good night; they try very hard to avoid it.

If the first attempt at getting the spider into the carton is not successful, its prospects immediately become better than yours. It is very difficult to get a running spider into a yogurt carton, and once it reaches the gap underneath a piece of furniture you may as well just forget it. I don’t suppose it’s such a problem, really. I may not be thrilled about sharing my home with spiders, but as long as I don’t see them it doesn’t really bother me. And if only they were better at catching flies, I would probably encourage them.

Extinct, or just 'hiding'?

Over the past months, I've been seeing articles about scientists "rediscovering extinct species" (their words). One article (dated May 2022) lists 8 rediscovered ones, and another (dated November 2022) lists one more.

Here they are:
1.The ground-dwelling black-naped Pheasant-pigeon

2. Jackson's Climbing Salamander

3. Silver-backed Chevrotain

4. Somali Sengi

5. Fernandina Galapagos Tortoise

6. Sierra Leone crab

7. Voeltzkow's Chameleon

8. Wallace's Giant bee

9. Velvet Pitcher plant

I think that those wise animals/species prefer to 'appear' extinct, so they just hide away as much as they can, for as long as they can, to avoid human beings (especially hunters/poachers). What do you think?grin

"If you wish upon a star, doesn't matter who you are..."

But, if you want to see shooting stars (i.e. to wish upon),
you may want to look to the north eastern sky tonight.
It is the peak night for the Perseid Meteor Shower viewing, as long as it is not cloudy where you are.
The best viewing time is 2 am until dawn, when you may see up to
100 shooting 'stars' or more per hour.
Even if you can't be awake that early in the morning, you can probably see a few
after midnight, or even a couple after 10 pm.

The Perseid Meteor Shower is the remnants of the Comet Swift-Tuttle.
This comet is the biggest thing that the earth comes close to.
But, it orbits the sun only once every 134 years. The next time will be the year 2126.
However, earth passes through the debris trail every year.
This year should be extra good viewing, because the moon will mostly be dark
(mostly in it's 'new' moon phase) as we pass through the debris trail.

If you don't want to stay up late to see it live and in person, you can see a time lapse filming of 2016's show below;

Get your many wishes ready;

Concerning in Cuba?

I have heard bits and pieces on the news lately, but nothing really in great detail that I can recall. A buddy of mine came over last night and he mentioned about an attack on the U.S. embassy in Cuba. Actually, the way it sounds, it is an ongoing attack.

After doing a Google search to find out more details regarding it, we discovered the level of the attack. They say it is a strange and mysterious sound that some of the people involved in the attack are hearing. Now, that seems rather harmless...but it is far from it. First of all, this sound is totally unidentifiable as to where it is coming from. It is suspected that it is coming from some distant location. It is also unknown who is behind it. What is even more concerning is what these sound waves are. According to what we read, they are microwaves and they have the capacity to fry...create heat...like your microwave in your home, I suspect. I did hear on the news were those who have been attacked, actually had (I believe) physical changes done to their brains.

We were unable to discover what, if any, long term effects a person suffers from such an attack. If these microwaves are as they report, I can imagine, it cannot be good.

One can ask so many questions:

How is this even possible?
What or who is causing it and for what reason?
Where is it coming from?

In addition, what about the question:

If everyone on this planet were unified, would this have happened in the first place?

Just like with a society, you divide them, they are able to be conquered. Can that same philosophy be used with a planet of people? dunno

Life after Death

We would all like to think that there is a form of life after death; There have always been stories of people who have died and come back to life after an accident or during surgery, however recent studies by a Dr. Robert Lanza suggests that our consciousness moves to another state after death.

His research has been based on the use of stem cells to develop technology to prevent the extinction of endangered animals. The research uses the principle of quantum physics, atoms are predictable according to Einstein’s theory of relativity but at a subatomic level they are not, if particles can exist in more than one place are there alternative universes?

I always have very bizarre dreams and wonder if it’s my consciousness telling me something, I can hear and see during my dreams and to a certain extent feel, So when I do become worm food will my consciousness continue? I am certainly not religious and this is not about religion, more about Scientific facts and would this explain people’s experiences of reincarnation?

We are a worldly bunch of people here, what are your thoughts?

What if we are biological robots

We get transmissions through a biological transmitter...our brain.

Through time, our creators made a deal with a universal confederation.

....giving us a soul and us the right to use our free will.

and to take it one step further...

What happens if this contract is running out, as our new model replacements begin to move in.

Perhaps a war between good and evil will ensue.

The good....the universal confederation
The evil...our creators who no longer need us.

dunno

Who would be the best to manipulate a mass of people, know us better than we know ourselves.....
But, there is love out there...but we must freely accept it and be it.

Perhaps with our freewill, we are judged to whether or not we are worthy of a soul.
