Under my nose...

There was a time I had control of all my tools, gadgets and hobby parts. I could switch hobbies for months and when I returned back to one everything was in places I recognize.
Since my move, all the knowledge is gone. Guitar things are mixed with drone and model helicopter things, plumbing supplies are in the same box as my vintage record albums.
You get the picture. What's amazing is my partner has perfect recall for things... well, the things in Miami before the move. If I needed the little metal tool to open a can of paint, she could find it in a few seconds.
I had two bookshelves one with computer books and software and the other with model aircraft things. In the aircraft was a few SD memory cards and adapters that allowed me to plug the SD into a computer. This is how I transferred drone videos to my computer. Hold that thought...

Recently, I've been looking for different things that disappeared in my move and after searching high and low and about to give up, I'll see the item I've been looking for set aside within arms reach, close enough to say it was 'under my nose' all along.

The last model helicopter I purchased has new technology the previous models didn't offer. Telemetry between the model and transmitter. Things like RPM, battery voltage can be read via the transmitter. Very cool, except I need to do a firmware update on the transmitter communicate with the receiver.

I downloaded the file to make the upgrade and I need the adapter. I have at least 3 of these things and made no less than four attempts to find them. My guess is they are together in one small plastic bag... somewhere.

It's a holiday weekend and I plan to be at the flying field a good part of it. That upgrade would be 'icing on the cake' so I've got to continue my search and check under my nose again and again for the SD card adapters.

and another thing that's annoying...

Forms that clear all the data if one detail was missed.
very mad
Lots of times we have to fill out forms online. When you get to the bottom and hit the submit button, you expect to move to the next page. MOST forms are programmed that when you are missing a selection it will let you know what needs to be completed in order to submit the form. But, SOME sites clear ALL THE FIELDS and make you start again without letting you know what was actually missing...

I can understand security fields like credit card numbers, but missing a zip code and having to go back and fill out an entire questionnaire makes it to my list...

Drinkable Water From Toilet To Tap.

Windhoek, the capital city of Namibia, is one of the few cities in Africa where you can safely drink tap water.applause

Though some residents still find it hard to swallow, they have been drinking the own waste since 1968. More than 25% of the water supply in Windhoek is reclaimed from municipal sewage water. In the 46 years since its inception, there had not been a single incident of bad water. The city is inhabited by 322,500 people.wow

Namibia is one of the driest countries in the world. The average annual rainfall is around 370mm, while the average evaporation rate is 3400mm. The nearest perennial river is 700km from the city. With its growing population, the capital faced the choice of population control or looking at alternative water sources.help

While it seems not yet possible to extract edible proteins from sewage, water is a reality. Australia is looking into it and so is California. It is an expensive process, but expensive water is better than no water at all.hmmm

You have a great day out there!wave

Decibel...

Decibel (dB) is a logarithmic unit to measure sound or electronic signal levels. For the purpose of this blog, I'll use it in audio... sound levels.
On another blog, a member will be going to a Formula One race and it's suggested they bring along hearing protection as often race cars develop noise of over 130 dB. Two weeks ago, I attended an outdoor concert and used ear plugs to lower the sound of the performance. It didn't bother my friend, but for me, the volume was louder than I wanted to be subjected to.

The decibel scale In basic terms: zero dB is the threshold of human hearing and a whisper would be 25-30 dB. Normal conversation is 60-70 dB and a lawn mower (at 6' feet) is around 100 dB. Most scales I've seen rate 125 dB as a level of pain and a jet engine at 100 feet away would be 140 dB.

Some sound ratings in the work force, like the noise from a wood chipper or jack hammer where used continuously poise serious problems of hearing loss. A blast from a shot gun could register 170 decibels. Although it's only a split second of noise, a few of those could permanently harm ones hearing. I know 2 people who lost most of their hearing... one guy had the job of refueling helicopters in Vietnam. The aviator hearing protection always fell off as they scrambled to get the helicopters back in the air and he now has dual hearing aids supplied by the VA. The same for my uncle who had the assignment to load bullets on the guns of a battleship during WWII.

When we were kids, it's was rare to have a car stereo more than 20 watts. It's become commonplace to see custom shops installing 1,000 watt systems in cars now!

When talking to one of those guys (with a megapower system), it won't be long before their first word is... huh?

3D printers

are a great bit of technology, For the past few years I have been seen some very creative fun uses for what I considered to be toys.
I was however amazed to see this article,

I personally think it to be one of the best uses to date seen to promote their use for anything other than toys.

A tribute to the ingenuity and spirit of Humanity yay

What was the last thing that you seen if ever, That made you proud to be part of the race. comfort ?

Have a great day My friends wave

Building a hospital in 10 days...

I've seen video from China with a dozen or so tractors and earth moving equipment running around the clock and scheduled to build a hospital in 10 days. I keep thinking dog and pony show. Were the plans already made for a soon to open project? Land already cleared? Sewer and drainage already installed in the ground? Fast setting concrete doesn't cure in less than a few weeks, hope they know that.

In the 70's I worked for a company that made prefabricated panels. Their big contracts were for hospitals in Saudi Arabia attached to U-shape tracks bolted to a concrete slab retained the walls around steel columns and joists.

Plumbing, electrical, a/c venting takes time...

Airplane hangars, warehouses in 10 days. Fully equipped real hospitals... I have my doubts.

Genius inventions...

I'm in the middle of a YouTube marathon viewing stories about some amazing inventions.

Thomas Edison patented (and marketed) the electric light that changed the way we live. No more candles or gas lights in the night. His lights were powered from generators that he built using direct current (DC) which is the same current created by batteries. DC current is good for short distance. The major drawback using DC is voltage drop over wires for any distance. This would require a power station every mile. Another problem was the generators themselves weren't efficient nor reliable.

Nikola Tesla, a young immigrant to America started working for Edison. Tesla told Edison he could fix the generator problems and Edison agreed to pay him a million dollars* if he did. Tesla redesigned the generators and Edison reneged only giving him a pay raise.

Angered he had been cheated by Edison, Tesla went off on his own and worked on a new invention of a generator using alternating current (AC) but he needed funding and struck up a partnership with millionaire George Westinghouse. His generators were in direct competition to Edison.

Edison announced to the public that alternating current was dangerous and began a smear campaign of publicly electrocuting dogs using AC. In response, Tesla gave a demonstration at the Worlds Fair in 1883 by shooting electricity through his body to produce light in the lights in his hands!

Alternating current being the superior method of transmission became the standard of electricity as we know it.

The more I learn about Edison, the less I like the man.

* note: one story claimed the deal was $50,000 and another said $1,000,000.
