The War with Germany has started.
The war broke out in ‘40. I was three years old, having been born in September of ‘37. “My dad went to Germany he would not be back for several years. He went there out of his own free will, believing that he could do more for his family that way.

My dad loved the German people and they loved him. (Not the Nazi’s)

Dad was able to send money home and other people who were

forced to work for the German Nazi’s, were not able to do this.

It was up to my mom now to take care of her two children my sister Greetje and I, and find food for us all.
Living in the North of Holland, only several hours away from the farmers, the first few years were not too bad for us, but that slowly changed.
My mother had to sell her best linens, her gold watch and sewing machine for food.
The farmers did not care to receive money as it was worth nothing, so anything of value had to go.
A bottle of oil, a very valued commodity, would sell for $250.00 guilders.

My mother would bring home dried fish that stank something awful. We had to eat it anyway.
Looking back it still amazes me how resourceful people are when they have to be.

I would go to where coal was loaded onto trains, and take with me a small broom and dustpan and bring home coal dust. We would chew tar and turned it into chewing gum. It also whitens your teeth.

You could do the same with grain. We kids would go to where the grain was being loaded onto trains, and we would pick up what had fallen on the ground. It takes a long time to chew that grain, but believe me it will turn into gum.

Sometimes we were lucky and had a piece of real chewing gum. We kids would take some sugar to give it some flavour again after we had been chewing it for some time and all the flavours had left.
At night we wound it around the iron bed post.

If friends had gum and asked if you wanted to come out and play with them, you would tell them: “Sure if I can have your gum.” “Okay but only for awhile”
Later came bubble gum, and because of the sharing, we would all have sores around our mouth.
Would you like to know what happens to gum if you chew it for days? It crumples up into nothing. (It does take several days)

We may have been kids but we did things that were beyond our age.
We would climb onto trucks loaded with sugar beets, and throw them off the truck so people could make sugar.

I remember that one day I was about six years old, when I was sent shopping at the corner store for groceries. I could see from the store the school the Germans occupied, as it was around the corner of our street.
I saw a truck heaped high with coal. I saw no Germans, so I climbed onto that truck and started to shove the coal down.

What was amazing was how quickly people realized what was going on. They came with buckets and pails to scoop up what they could. When others took over from me to shovel more coal down, I ran home to tell mother at home to get some for us too.
The Germans let us be for a while they must have known what was going on. Most of them were mere boys.

We were also sustained by the soup kitchen. One of our neighbours called to say that there was meat in the soup that day. Quickly I was sent to get some of that good stuff. In the meantime, our neighbours had found the source of the meat it was the tail of a mouse. I can't remember if we ate that soup.

During the German occupation you were not allowed to have a radio, they were all confiscated. Mother kept hers and it was connected together with a neighbours. Someone must have turned them in for the authorities came knocking one day. They asked her first how long she had that radio. She said the first thing that came to her mind, six months. They went to the neighbour next and asked him the same question. Unbelievably he gave the very same answer. Because of that, they were let go, after the radio was taken of course.

Poverty and the Catholic church

Recently I saw that the President of the Philippines..Roddy rodrigo wants to provide free contraception to over 8 million poor people, but the Catholic church wants to prevent this, and also abortion.

103 million people live in the islands of the Philippines, and id hazard a guess some 80million are living in poverty.. I've seen for myself the way these people live and how many kids they churn out.

The Catholic church has a lot to answer for with not allowing contraception in Africa where Aids has spread like wild fire, its not all their fault but they have contributed.

You cannot keep having kids, with no job and no education, bringing a life into this world because your Church says its ok to have as many kids as you want, who's going to feed them ?..not the church..doh

Teenage pregnancies in the far east has increased due to lack of education, and contraception..Women in their 30s having 10 kids look like they are in their 50's..washing clothes all day in the streams, cooking.

Home remedies that work for me.

1. If you are choking on an ice cube, don't panic. Simply pour a cup of boiling water down your throat and presto. The blockage will be almost instantly removed.

2. Avoid cutting yourself while slicing vegetables by getting
someone else to hold them while you chop away.

3. Avoid arguments with the little woman about lifting the toilet seat by simply using the sink.

4. For high blood pressure sufferers: simply cut yourself and bleed for a few minutes, thus reducing the pressure in your veins. Remember to use a timer.

5. A mouse trap, placed on top of your alarm clock, will prevent you from rolling over and going back to sleep after you hit the snooze button.

6. If you have a bad cough, take a large dose of laxatives, then you will be too afraid to cough.

7. Remember: Everyone seems normal until you get to know them.

8. If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

Stray Thoughts: Some people are like slinkies - not really good for anything but they bring a smile to your face when pushed down the stairs

The season to be Jolly?

SA is world's worst drunk-driving country

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), South Africa tops the list of drunk-driving related deaths in the world.

According to the latest Global Status report on Road Safety for 2015, 58% of deaths are alcohol related.

According to the report, you have a 26.6% chance of dying in a road crash in Africa. The second most dangerous region on the WHO's list is the Eastern Mediterranean - 19.9% chance of being killed on the road.

One of the reasons I don't drink alcohol is that I have seen and witnessed too many people being burnt alive in their vehicles due to head-on collisions in the Limpopo Province. Mostly due to alcohol.

The $10 toaster...

Around 5 years ago I bought a cheap toaster...$10. The price was right, the product was wrong. The temperature setting was too touchy that the slightest turn was uncooked or burnt. Possibly before I moved or during the yard sale getaway, the toaster disappeared. I didn't miss it because it was horrible, but I really wanted a toaster.
Last week, when shopping at Walmart, I bought another cheap toaster... yes, $10.
It seems low-end toasters haven't been affected by inflation.
I started it up without toast to get the 'new smell' out of it. The apartment quickly smelled of burned plastic and I unplugged it in fear it would set off the smoke detector alarm.

My partner said "Take it back" but I persisted. I moved it to the 2nd bathroom, turned on the exhaust fan and started another round of making (empty) toast. Allowing it to cool, I went for 2 more rounds. Little by little the burned plastic smell disappeared and the door closed in the bathroom kept the apartment from smelling like... burned plastic.

I had an English muffin I wanted to toast, so I split it, put it on a plate and headed to the bathroom. When asked where I was going... my response was "I'm going to make toast!"

Just to avoid questions about health and safety. It's a 2 bedroom / 2 bath condo and that bathroom (with a shower) is used for storage, the toilet has a plastic cover (like hotels) and the sink is only used for dental, water-pik, hand washing, mustache trimming, etc.

Use of science for the welfare of mankind-

I am searching a group of friends those who are serious about how
to save the life of people in different possible conditions. How to
utilize science and technology for the welfare of mankind.
I am searching friends engaged in scientific reasearch and the teachers
Capable to help me in disclosure of ideas/techniques/inventions.
How do I work?
Construction of one scientific device may need many experts from many
fields like Electronics, Mechanical, Chemical and other engineering.
Services for the specific conditions are provided by the
Industries/manufactures/experts of the concerned field. I like
to work with universities because Universities are source of knowledge
and their approvals would possibly be helpful to get fund from the
concerned Govt departments to construct the models
of inventions. I feel, if I am given a chance to present an invention
as per my method, some good devices/life saving systems useful to
mankind would exist. Most of times I need to confirm the possibility
of constructions. In other words, I need to confirm the possibility of
constructions before presentation of an invention. I clearly feel,
that most of my inventions/life saving systems can exist, if my technical
questions are replied. Finalization of my design some time depends
upon the answers of the experts. I wish to meet experts in two rounds
of talk. In the first round, I would like to meet the experts through
'one-to-one meeting system' to ask my questions. As soon as all the
questions are replied, the second round of talk will begin and the
complete drawing of that device/invention will be disclosed. The
disclosure of any project/invention would be possible in/after second
round of talk. Experts may take their time to reply but if they reply
within 72 hours, the applicant will be highly obliged. If you are posted in an university, you can be my best friend and many useful life saving systems (useful in natural calamities and disasters) would exist because of our friendship and meeting. Some right persons if come ahead to accept my friendship, it may bring the storm of beautiful creations for the mankind.

Most important request- to avoid any chance of incomplete presentation
the disclosure of any idea/invention would not be possible before the
right time. In other words, any idea/complete invention would not be
disclosed/discussed while asking questions. Presentation of an
idea/invention/design would be possible after completion which would
be possible after collection of all the answers of the questions. please join me.

It's Hot out today...

It is "HOT" outside today... especially right here at "high noon"...

Been out rearranging my garden, moving the containers around to different positions. Now you understand why I choose to use containers/pots VS planting in the ground. It would be a lot more work to rearrange them if in the ground. (DUH)!

Anyway, decided to line my roses along each side of the area 24ft X 24ft (a row of them,10 on each side). There is a reason for that!

And you say: "What, pray tell would persuade you cuz, ever to do such a thang, if'n they were ok where they were at?"

I say: "Cause my cuz, with tha sprinkler I have, I can now better control the spray pattern of the watering mechanism. Known to us Southerners as "ad-just-ments"....

And you say: "Humm... [well, hug my momma, and make me a mater sammich] what is so important in controlling the pattern?"

And I say: "Well cuz..., it's like this here, i've learned that watering the foliage/leaves of the rose, enables the risk of fungus, dark/black spots, yellowing of leaves and parasites that damage the plant over time. The watering process should be localized, by watering only at the base of the plant. Hence, I rearranged them outside the watering pattern of the sprinkler, so the leaves don't get wet, and the rest of the community of plants/flowers, within the center of the area, can now receive their water with no risk to the roses."

OK, class is over for now... haha!! Everyone have a great Mother's Day! ~JOHN~

Reading Comprehension

What's the sense in you commenting on a persons blog if you don't fully comprehend it ?

At the end of the day you twist and turn a blog to something totally different from what it originally was.

Sad.

No need to quarreal, rant and rave over someone's blog which obviously you don't fully get the sense of.

Anyway the blogging section on here is just for fun. Why take some of them to a larva level ?

Reading is one aspect - comprehending is another level.

confused doh
