RE: Why not Skype ?

Skype went rapidly downhill after Microsoft took over, now I use "Wire" similar to skype, written by ex skype programmers and actually works.

Let me also repeat what has already been posted

NEVER post any personal details on an open forum, it is a quick way to start having serious problems. It is also against CS forum rules I think.

RE: What are you most scared of, when meeting a date for the first time!

Not sure why anyone would be scared of meeting a date, they are very healthy. Unless they are the ones with the pip, that can really hurt when you bite one and not expecting a hard stone inside.

RE: MISSING SUBMARINE

From Reuters
"The ARA San Juan, a class ship TR-1700 built in Germany in the 1980s, disappeared on November 15 with 44 crew members after reporting an electrical fault while sailing from the south of the country to the Mar del Plata naval base, firing a great search operation.

The Argentine Navy confirmed two reports of a violent event under the sea that occurred on the same day that the ship lost communication and near its last known position.

"We are talking about an anomalous, singular, short, violent, non-nuclear event, consistent with an explosion," Enrique Balbi, spokesman for the Navy, told reporters, adding that ships from several countries were heading to the area to search for traces of the ARA San Juan."

RE: Have you been oppressed by the state ??

Can you say which places in the world look like Victorian England? I would love to visit them.

No? Maybe a figment of an over imaginative mind.grin

RE: Have you been oppressed by the state ??

Going by some of the posts on CS, state control of minds may not be such a bad thinglaugh

RE: Are happy people to be trusted.

Sorry it was tongue in cheek humour, I think your premise is actually very close to the truth, that those who display an almost fanatical sense of happiness are indeed, hiding something far deeper.

RE: Zimbabwe

It's a sad fact that most people outside of Africa know and understand very little about the countries in that continent. The only news every published was always the bad news, never the good things that Europeans did when they first arrived.
In my opinion, the biggest mistake the white immigrates did was to create borders, something native Africans never understood or even believed, and that created tensions and increased tribal wars.
But we can all be clever with hindsight, overall countries benefitted from western influences, and then discarded that to become rich and powerful, Mugabe is a prime example. Armin is another. In fact, almost every leader that took control after gaining independence.

RE: Gender neutral public restrooms

I hate them, I can't balence to use them correctly, so have to wait until I can find a western toiletcrying . McDonalds is good, they usually have two toilets, one squat and the other western. But in Asia you must remember to carry your own toilet paper, as it in never available. The Chinese will just take the whole roll home with them lol if one is left in the cubicle.

RE: Gender neutral public restrooms

It is the cistern for flushing.
You push a lever with your foot, it flushes the pan, some have a high power flush. Some, like this one, just a small amount of water to flush.

RE: artificial intelligense

At present what Gates says holds true, but he is not looking far enough forward in my opinion, AI will at some stage create a biological computer, and that will then become the new version of mankind.

Right now man has the final control of any form of AI, we can switch off the power supply, but when biological, that can't happen!

This is a typical Chinese college restroom

RE: Gender neutral public restrooms

In China the mens restroom often has a woman cleaner lurking in a corner, at first it was disconcerting, especially as men's urinals are open unlike the actual toilet which is enclosed. I usually use a cubicle as can't pee when being watched by a womanlaugh

RE: artificial intelligense

I am what I am. Especially on subjects I have studied, and the English language is my specialist subject, but still learn new things every day.

As for AI, it terrifies me, the idea that a supercomputer, could design and build an even more supercomputer ad infinitum until the human species is no longer regarded as the highest form of intelligence. AI will then see mankind as a worthless and useless commodity, and therefore ensure the end of human life.

If you want to read some interesting ideas, read the thesis written by Prof Stephen Hawking. A man I hold with deep regard.

RE: artificial intelligense

Exactly, the intelligence is not real, therefore by definition it is artificial, thank you for proving my point!

RE: artificial intelligense

A language is a living thing and like most living things it evolves, English is one of the foremost languages in the world for evolving, Engish is made up of so many original and modern languages that any dictionary has to modify and take into account new words or meanings.
For example, the word "selfie", a newly created word, that is now a part of standard English and has been added to the two main English dictionaries Oxford/Cambridge. Definitions change over time and so that also needs to be modified.

Can you refrain from shouting please, it is not necessary and makes it hard to read your posts, thank you.

Oh a dictionary is not an encyclopedia, but unless you understood the use and meaning of a dictionary, I guess easy to make that mistake.

If you are a writer, how come you don't understand the basic meaning of dictionary? It would be impossible to communicate if all words were left unacountable and any meaning attached to those words.

RE: Zimbabwe

No I didn't forget, that was not true in the 1950-60s, the rich farmers employed native Africans, built homes, schools, hospitals for the local people. Had the white immigrants never entered Rhodesia, the majority of the indigenous population would have had a far harder life, similar to the one they eventually got after Mugabe took control.

I was born and brought up in Kenya, my father employed over 20 native Africans in the small company he ran, he also provided financial aid, scholarships for local school children to enter universities.

To suggest that all that was done by the British in African countries was bad, is to admit an outstanding level of ignorance. Maybe some of the ideology was misplaced and certainly some whites mistreated local people, but you cannot tar all with the same brush.

History has shown that those African countries run by the British, became prosperous and raised the level of life for the mainstream population, history also shows that since those same countries became independent, they have fallen backwards and are now struggling to survive. Thankfully China has now taken on some responsibilities and is helping to rebuild some African countries.

RE: Zimbabwe

Indeed, I still have wonderful memories from my childhood, especially the noise of the falls and the rainbows created by the spray rising up.
On my father's lounge wall there is a shield made from zebra hide and short spear, given to him by a tribal elder for some help he did, it is a very proud memento and one that one day I will have the privilege to hang on my wall.

RE: artificial intelligense

So what is intelligence? intelligence means the ability to learn, gain knowledge, learn new skills in a living being. So if a machine has the ability to imitate a living being and learn to acquire new skills and knowledge, then by any definition, including the one you posted, that would be Artificial Intelligence.

Just because you don't like a definition does not change the fact that a dictionary is the authority for the meanings of words.

As someone who has spent years studying etymology you may have hit on the wrong person to discuss the actual meaning of English words laugh laugh laugh
