U.S. Carrier Group Moves Toward Korea - Or Not...

Alert readers of CS blogs will recall that I posted a blog announcing the U.S. was deploying the Super Aircraft Carrier Carl Vinson and its attendant strike force to the waters off Korea.
That was one week ago.

Surprisingly, ya'll CS blog readers were thus better informed than the COMMANDER OF THE CARRIER GROUP!

Good Friday April 14........1865

152 years ago today was also Good Friday.
That evening, Abraham Lincoln attended a performance of the play 'Our American Cousin' at Ford's Theater.
He was shot during the performance and died the next morning, April 15, 1865.

Exactly 47 years later, the RMS Titanic struck an iceberg on the night of April 14 and sank the morning of April 15.

For the record, April 14, 1912 was NOT Good Friday. It was the first Sunday after Easter.

Swiss Spaghetti Farmers...

...are expecting to reap a bumper crop this year. applause

One of the upsides of Global Warming/Climate Change is the unbelievable effect it's had on spaghetti growth.
This has been especially noticeable in the Alpine spaghetti growing districts of Switzerland, which have experienced unprecedented record spaghetti harvests in recent years. yay

On a more somber note, there is serious concern that new GMO spaghetti varieties may affect the quality and nutritional value of spaghetti. sad

Spaghetti farming is now almost totally mechanized.
This old news clip shows how the harvest was accomplished by simpler more traditional methods.
Today, these time honored traditions are observed by only a very few basically hobby spaghetti farmers. sigh

Y'all may address me as Mic Guyver...

You know - like that legendary T.V. guy who can make/fix anything with nothing but a hairpin.

My house was built circa 1890.
Many of the fixtures are original - 125 years old.

A while ago, an original door lock went hawire.
I figured it was busted, so taking it apart couldn't hurt...what the hell, I might even be able to fix it.
Also, I'm rather fond of old things & like to keep them functioning.

A flat spring in the mechanism had broken. sad
I figured going to a hardware store asking for a spring for an antique lock would result in...rolling on the floor laughing
So I laid it aside for the time being.

lightbulb

A few days ago, I figured I might be able to cobble in a spring from a ballpoint pen.
Rummaging through an odds 'n ends bin, I found (are y'all ready for this?)
a...HAIRPIN!
Yes. Really!!

I figured it was just springy enough, and exactly the right size to snip & bend into a suitable flat spring.

VOILA! yay

Yep.
It fit just like it was custom made for the mechanism...which I guess it was, come to think 'bout it. roll eyes

As long as it was disassembled, I also oiled up the whole mechanism.
It now works like everything's moving on jeweled bearings...far(!) smoother than it ever did since I've owned it...probably smoother than it has in fifty years.
Maybe a hundred years, even. grin

Pretty cool, huh? batting

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO...

Laura Ingalls Wilder! party

The author/heroine of the Little House Books turns 150 years old.
She was born in the Big Woods of Wisconsin. Her first book, Little House In The Big Woods (published when she was 65) recounts her early girlhood.

It also sets the stage/tone for the rest of the series of eight Little House Books in which she describes being young with America & growing up on the expanding frontier.

happy birthday Laura!

GROUNDHOG DAY! WINTER WILL...

1) END - cool
2) CONTINUE FOR SIX MORE WEEKS - cold

groundhog

History...
Groundhogs (aka hedgehogs, whistle pigs, woodchucks) break hibernation this time of year. The weather lore holds that when they emerge from their Winter burrow, if they see their shadows, it frightens them, they return to their holes & Winter will continue for six more weeks.
wow.....hole....moping
If, however, it is cloudy, they do not see the shadow, so they remain out of their Winter abode and...WINTER ENDS!
dancing...applause yay

First reports from Eastern U.S. locales should be coming in shortly...
Stay tuned to this blog for updates as they become available!

HAPPY YEAR OF THE FIRE ROOSTER, Y'ALL!

chicken

Today is Chinese New Year's Eve; tomorrow begins the Year Of The Fire Rooster!

It's claimed the next couple weeks, until the full moon, will be the time of the world's greatest migration of people as folks in China, and folks of Chinese descent all over the world, travel to be with friends & family.
There will be special foods. Millennia-old tradtions will be honored.

I'll not get into the specifics of the foods & traditions.
There'll be plenty of opportunity in the comments for folks to share first hand details of the holiday(s).

For now (the eve of the New Year) it's time to clean your space & rid yourself of the old.

Happy New Year, Y'all! party
