Together again...

I first heard about the heavy-metal band QUIET RIOT in the 1980's from lots of MTV play with their version of the SLADE hit Cûm On Feel the Noize. They were one of the first bands to put metal on the map and like most, breaking up and reforming was in their DNA as members came and went like a revolving door.

Through the famed years singer Kevin DuBrow and drummer Frankie Banali were the common elements to hold the band together. Sadly, DuBrow passed away from a cocaine overdose in 2007.
If I recall, DuBrow owned the rights to the name Quiet Riot and it wasn't until years later his family allowed Banali to use the name and reform the group.

I've seen a few live performances and they always gave a good show, including acknowledgement for guitarist Randy Rhoads who founded the band with DuBrow and later joining with Ozzy Osbourne of Black Sabbath fame to find his own stardom until his untimely death in 1982.

In 2019, Banali, was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer and not expected to live out the year. He went through chemotherapy, dropping some 60 pounds and appeared to recover enough to return to drumming for a few gigs including one in Japan with the legendary Led Zeppelin tribute guitarist Mr. Jimmy. Success rate of recovery from this form of cancer is very rare. Three weeks ago, I heard that Quiet Riot was booked to play at the Sturgis Rally and thought Frankie (after more than 20 treatments) must have beat the disease. Could this be possible?

Friday afternoon, I received a call from a drummer friend. Frankie passed away Thursday evening, August 20, 2020.

I've heard there's a musicians gig in the sky where they all go to perform. Frankie, Kevin and Randy must be rehearsing right now!

A few websites show Quiet Riot has gigs booked until 2021 and I see Frankie wasn't in the lineup for a gig at Riverfest 2020 on August 7th.

What are the legal requirements for tribute bands ?
Do they need permission from the original band to do their songs ? What fees are generally paid ?
Jim, good questions.
Live performance is different from recorded songs. I'm not sure of the fees there.

To do recordings, you need permission and have to pay royalties to the listed composer of the song. I blogged this a while back. 50% comes off the top for this, but many acts need exposure and it's worth it to be known for doing another artists song.

Not long ago Guns N' Roses did some songs by Bob Dylan. I heard he was in financial jeopardy and asked for their help. They recorded some of his hits that he gets 50% of the album royalties and song credits.
Thanks for answering my question. I've seen a lot of tribute bands advertised. So, if a band makes money doing the songs in a performance, they pay nothing. But, if they record that gig and sell it, they generally pay 50% of the proceeds off the top, not the net ? So, they could record a few new songs of their own and play concerts mostly of other people's music and make a good living. That's close to being a parasite. laugh
I liked the music video of "c*m On Feel the Noize" back in 1983. I didn't know the singer passed away in 2007 however.
In my research this morning, I hit on a photo of Mr. Jimmy with Jimmy Page... all smiles.
Page is aware of that tribute band. Most of his YouTube gigs appear to be in Japan, but he played the Whiskey a Go-Go in Los Angeles.

That brings up the Jason Bonham Led Zeppelin Experience.
He often visits South Florida and makes appearances to radio station Big 105.9 and I remember him mentioning the management group talking care of all the legalities for his tour.

thumbs up
Shawn, Quiet Riot paved the way for heavy metal groups.

What annoys me is they were never inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, yet lesser groups and even rap artists made the acknowledgement.
"Shake for me girl, I wanna be your...."

That phrase has 2 referenced meanings.

"...back-door man"
That's a different 'back door'

Lyrics in Zeppelin's Since I've Been Loving You:
"I open my front door, I hear my back door slam,
You know, I must have one of them new fangled, new fangled back-door man"
