The trials and tribulations of being in a lockdown in the UK.
As many here know, my home is in the Philippines, sadly, due to the pandemic, and being British, I was forced to return to the UK when flying back to The Philippines from Sri Lanka, where I was working.I arrived in the UK at the end of March 2020 and had assumed (stupidly) that I would be flying home in maybe a month or two.
So I asked one of my sons if I could stay in his granny flat, he agreed thankfully. I have remained in said granny flat for 10 months now, self-isolating for the first month was not so hard, I had time to catch up on paperwork, refine some of my lecture materials and create/modify PPT’s used in my lectures.
Then around May it slowly dawned on me that this pandemic was not going to disappear as fast as I had initially thought, I considered buying a car to gain some independence as until that time was using my son's car when available.
So I searched around and decided a hybrid was the way to go and would give me an idea of what owning a duel fuel car would be like.
As is my usual wont, I spent hours researching and comparing vehicles, eventually ending up with a choice of two, after test driving them both for a couple of days, bought the one with a buyback scheme attached.
The freedom and independence this car gives is indescribable, I could go out into the countryside, other towns and visit family and friends, even going to a pub or restaurant when they reopened was an adventure. It was truly heartwarming to visit my children who are all over the country, and meeting up with old friends was a delight.
But, as much as I enjoyed this new found freedom, there was always this constant nagging in my head, that I missed my true home, missed my Pinoy friends and the ex-pats who descended on my home most weekends with their families to make use of the swimming pool.
As the weather started to get colder things rapidly changed my outlook on life, I found myself missing things that had not appeared important previously. I missed the warmth of sitting on the porch in the evenings with an icy beer chatting to my neighbour and as always, putting the world to rights. I missed my early morning swim and my walks along the beach, idly looking at the flotsam washed up the previous night, I often took a large bag and collected plastic that I found there, not for any environmental reason but because I just hated to see the beach looking so dirty. I miss so much regarding my home and way of life in the Philippines, it is a truly glorious country with wonderful and amazing people, I have definitely found my paradise here in The Philippines.
Now some may question why I chose the Philippines and not somewhere closer to the UK like Spain or Greece. The answer is simple, I love Asia, love Asian people, and the Philippines is an ideal location to use as a stepping stone to visit all over Asia and Oceania, it has always been my desire to spend time in Australia and New Zealand exploring these outstanding countries, There are (were) regular flights to these countries from my local airport.
Now, we are under a stronger lockdown, I rarely go anywhere other than one large supermarket to buy food. My days are spent giving online lectures to groups of students in universities all over the world, usually in anti-social hours due to time differences, but at my age sleep is not a problem and I don’t require much more than 4-5 hours a day.
I smoke so have limited myself to just 6 a day at this time, it gives me a chance to get some fresh air and have a short walk on a regular basis. I am also slowly trying to reduce that 6, as my intention is to have stopped by the time I book a flight home
All in all, I suppose I’m lucky, as I’m healthy and I am alive, as and when this lockdown decreases in its strictness, I can hopefully, reclaim my independence again. But returning to my paradise will always be first in my mind. I can't wait, the first thing I will do is have a swim, I miss that more than pretty much anything else

Just kidding, it was nice to read about your paradise life, in time it will come back, just like everything else. We all have to be patient and get vaccinated... I envisage that if people haven't been vaccinated, then they can't travel abroad... And rightly so!!!
Hope you are coping ok with the lockdown, here it is not so bad, but more a nuisance, as now and again I think I need something but as most shops are closed it just leaves Amazon or eBay and I have grown to detest this way of shopping.
Watching the news and being glad for each day... Just hope the vaccines do the trick!!!
every time i pop over to the uk , i also get home sick and can not wait to get back to my own piece of paradise ,
unlike your situation i have the option of driving both to and from the uk ,i used to fly there ,,but not any more ,i now much prefer to drive even if it takes me 3 days ,but it is a 3 day adventure that is very enjoyable indeed ,,
sadly the uk is no longer what it used to be ,so hence my trips are getting fewer ,,,
i hope you get to have the vaccine and you can get back to normal young man,,, have a good one ,,
I used to have a place in Rhodes, would drive there in an old Renault Camper van once in Athens I would get a ferry to the island but found the stress of driving was more than I needed. Although I did enjoy the drives through the Alpes, used to take several days and would try a different route whenever possible, travelling to me is my lifeblood, I started when I was 4 going on leave to the UK from East Africa and the taste and love of travel has just grown and grown since then.
Travel is the worlds best university.
Less a Brit/Yank thing, sadly.
But adhering to every word of my advice, verbal or otherwise, especially for women, and for man crusher men, Trumps Travel by a long shot. You of course agree
It was nice to read about Redex's hiking group and see the family pictures too.And Mimi with her various local companions were breath taking.(lady friends or family).I even laughed at all the excitement of Blue and BB's surrounding their reunion.
I enjoyed seeing Phyllis's long roadtrip with her family and was glad to read Usha arrived home just as Covid ramped up.
We have many joys to share with each other on CS in the years to come. And reflecting on what we share in common and the genuine concern goes hand in hand.
Happy 2021! Remind me when we can celebrate Chinese New Year with our CS friends too.
It's what a blog is supposed be all about, flyme.
@Rizla
I didn't like the guns aggressive begging and guards in MM and Quezon.. Batangas was ok, except for the church belting out their own 5am call to prayer. That was back on Marcos days however. I always felt quite at home in provincial China
As Jac said, the definition of a blog is mainly about a life experience. Being taken over by political and Religious claptrap is not what a blog is typically used for, hence the recent banning of political blogs.
But thank you for your input, it gives a clearer picture of your personality for potential suiters.
There are a number of CS members who live or have a close association with Asia and they are interested in such news, It has nothing to do with positivity or negativity, and everything to do with compassion and empathy, qualities you probably never experienced.
Hears a thought, if you dislike my Blog so much, why not write your own, I'm sure you can write a fascinating insight into your own life.
You are very lucky!
Seafairy, why give up on your dream to travel? Sure right now travel is not really possible, but it will return, and you can travel to say Thailand, and then Japan, fixing a destination maybe is the wrong approach
Just travel anywhere, and see how a new culture grabs you, the world is getting smaller and travel is becoming easier and cheaper, you are young so finding temp work in a different country would not be so hard, that will introduce you to new friends and possibly finance your next trip.
Make life an adventure

I was a fool and should have travelled to Spain when I had the chance last year, At least then I would be able to explore regions not yet visited, and as borders open up, could go further afield.
The UK is just too small an island for my wandering feet.
In other words self,self.
Love and peace.
Flyme.
Very pretty area.
I have read it is worth the challenge.
