Enlighten Me, Please!

You see, I am not an English speaker and I am not really familiar with Western culture, and that's why I need you all to enlighten me.

1. When someone said "I am taking a break from smoking"
Does that mean that person will quit smoking for good or will always smoke again someday, anyday?

2. Is exaggerating lying (telling false information)?

thanks

Kalpataru, when someone takes a break it means temporary.
People take a break at work to have coffee so they temporary stop
This is the keyword, stopping for a while, taking a break.......................................jenny
He has some hope to quit one day. Starting with this break.
It's then up to you if you wanna consider that glass half full or half empty.

About the exxagggurated lies... hmm hard to say from this far away if it's a non threat.
He may know you tend to read too much into things (worry too much).
What it might have been was he told a white lie, and you blew it out of proportion
and he than started to back-paddle like a maniac, making it look dramatic when its not.

No, I'd chill if I were you.
Hope you two soon will be together and not divided by distance, than it will all be cool.

thumbs up
It means that he wants to quit but he's not sure he'll manage so to cover his behind, instead of quitting, he said he'll be having a wee break.

Exaggerating can be both lying and not depending on the context. One can exaggerate to get a point across. One can also exaggerate to convey false information and that would be lying. For example, if I tell you that I flew out the window as soon as I heard the tune of the icecream van, I would be exaggerating but not lying. If I were to tell you that I have a 2-foot thingy, well, I might be exaggerating and lying.
Even people who say they are quitting are likely to smoke again, then quit again. Taking a break is not smoking for a while. The while could be hours, days, years, forever.

Exaggerating is not lying because by implication it is expanding on a fact to make the fact seem more significant. "I caught the biggest fish in the lake" well, you caught a bigger fish than the standard size ... "I am the best lover you will ever have" translates into "I would like to be your lover, and I'm hoping you won't expect too much", haha.

It can be fun and it can be deliberately misleading, which would take it very close to the line between truth and lie. Sorry, that doesn't really help, does it? As a general rule I would say anyone I didn't know, who wanted something from me, would be exaggerating. We all do to some extent. It makes life more colourful and makes us feel, and seem, more interesting.
1) "Break" implies a Temporary Cessation -
It doesn't rule out the possibility that it could become Permanent.
Given the Context, it's quite Possible that it's Hoped the break Will be permanent -
But there's a Possibility of Relapse.

2) "Exaggeration" implies one is describing something that's Real, but made to sound a bit More than it actually is.
Exaggeration is Generally regarded as Less Deceitful than outright Lying.

Example -
"If I've told you once, I've told you a million times to Stop Exaggerating."

@MicLee

So it's like MAYBE ooorrr MAYBE NOT. Not certain at all. Yes?

It's still a deceit then.

PS

The way I see it, you are an English speaker. However, English is not your native language.
You're a liar, is what it is. You said I lied of not going into the casino by stealing my post without CS approval to prove your point that I am lying?

I didn't ever say I don't go to wherever I want to go including the casino. I said: I prefer to be here THAN going to the casino.

You are stupid in not understanding my simple English.
You're a bit like me lindsy. I could do this and that but instead I prefer to do
something of my own liking, even if it's not right now. Quality over quantity.
Best is both however hehe, but all in good time. hug
@Chatillion wave

Hmm.. that I can speak English (esp. just a little) doesn't make me an English speaker, Chat.

That's correct. And I am proud of my native language. banana
