Its interesting when people say that god was always there but in the same voice explain that god made the universe. Just WHAT was god, a god of before the universe was created? Why was there any reason for a god to exist at all when there was nothing to exist for?

I kind of find that analogy somewhat the same as what came first... the chicken or the egg.

Trying to convince me that god was around before the universe just doesn't cut it. That type of statement is for simple, unenquiring minds and is not a logical answer by any stretch of the imagination.

I'd like to comment specifically on this: Without it you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things.
Have you ever tried to view our global society from the perspective being religion had never existed? Not ‘existed and somehow, at some point, removed’. Never existed in the first place. Not as easy as it might at first, seem. (Thinking from that perspective: knowing what you know: having been taught everything you have from the perspective that knowledge and those teachings have impacted upon you.)
I think you nailed the next sentence but perhaps not contemplating our reality, as a social people, had Religion never been invented. I use the word invented because without the concept of religion the concept of created could only be understood from the perspective of 'as an invention of the mind', religion being the physical manifestation of the invention initially conceptualized by one thinking mind. The documentary is a critique masquerading I would assume. One to invoke thought about religion and perhaps lead one to contemplate or confront one's own personal religion?
Even the concept of a God creating religion, rather than human creating God, is impossible if religion had never been considered by human as a concept of being.
But it had. Had once been considered. Given all the current rites and rituals a whole lot of time and effort went into making religion what it is today.
The consensus of me concludes, it is not easy nor a simple matter to contemplate the Human station in all its complexities, contradictions and nuances from the standpoint religion was never invented and grown into the invasive monster it has become today.
Once, I spent some time contemplating just how pervasive religion has become just in me. Me, a non religious person. A person who saw that the delivered alternatives to religious all stem from the persuasion of how another human pervaded by religion sees options to the God concept. but what about from the standpoint of a person born into a civilization where religion had never existed?
Now over lay that with what I experienced this life, in this Global Society. The trick was seeing the two separately and understanding each equally. "But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.”
At least religion thinks us so moronic they made it real simple, forth letter D + evil and 15th letter O - good and we have evil and vile and even live against good god.
Or was that just freakish chance? There is a long forgotten saying, somebody thought of everything. (It does not mean somebody has already thought of everything, although one or two might have thought that is what the saying means.) It means everything you read, somebody thought of that.
