The cookie jar...

A while back, I bought some cashews in a plastic jar with removable lid. when the cashews were gone, I decided to clean and reuse the container. Sometimes, it's for storage of workshop parts, screws, bolts, washers, etc. This time, I decided to use the empty to hold Ginger Snaps. The brand I buy (from the dollar store) come in a bag so I figured it would be easier than clipping the bag each time I wanted a cookie.

The cookies have sugar so I only have 1 or 2 a week and noticed after a month, they aren't as crunchy as when the bag was first opened or when clipped every time I opened. Obviously, it's the air in the container making them stale where I'm unable to close tight like the bag.

As kids, my grandmother baked so well, that neighbors would come to watch her, taking notes as she kept all her secret recipes in her head!
My brother told me she used to work in a bakery and that's where she honed her cooking skills.

As far as her cookies go, when we visited, she would wrap her freshly baked cookies (chocolate chip were her best) in wax paper and aluminum foil for us to bring home.
We weren't concerned about sugar then, so the cookies weren't around long enough to become stale.

Something to note... her secret for soft chocolate chip cookies was substituting orange juice for milk in the recipe.

Absolutely fascinating information Chat. How about instead of rolling the bag up that takes up so much time and energy you use one of those zip lock bags that have that little slide thingy. Of course you'd have to purchase those, but I've heard you can wash them out and actually reuse them. Just a thought. roll eyes
Absolutely fascinating information Chat.

It is... thanks!

Low... Back so soon?
It's good to see you. How was the honeymoon?

It's a no-win with the plastic bags.
I've got them in all sizes.
I've tried the seal-lock and slider type and can say when you open the slider, it's easy to get food inside. The other one is manufactured differently and the plastic is stuck together making it harder to fill.
I'll use an older one only if I'm putting garbage in it like chicken bones so it doesn't stink when it's in the dumpster.

Wash and reuse?
Think about that... spending 15 minutes, soap and water, maybe a paper towel to dry the inside is using a quarter to save 3 cents.

Let me know if it actually works for you.

thumbs up
And there was I about to congratulate you for actually reusing something and then you blew it by thinking that reusing reusable ziplock bags was about the cost to you.

Aye yi yi... moping

But if it takes you 15 minutes to wash one, I suppose I should be comforted than putting your landfill bin out for kerbside collection must take you several years. giggle
No honeymoon Chat, I was just busy doing real life stuff. You wouldn't understand.
No one says you have to reuse them. I understand how washing them out would take up a lot of your blogging time laugh
By the way I like your Fat chick blog. You really stirred up the community. ??

Real life stuff?
Like driving 500 miles a week to a job and worked 55-60 hours a week, maintained a house, did renovations to that and a condo... naah, I haven't a clue.

By the way I like your Fat chick blog.

See how easily that gets twisted?
Don't lie to these people, they might think I voted for Trump.
Anyway, it was a blog about perception, where the woman didn't want a man to lie to her, yet she lied to herself.
Have another cookie chat and calm down. laugh Well it's good that you can blog while driving and working. That's a plus??
0ff topic. . grin
jac, the plastic recycle bins here actually say no food items, so things with food make it to the garbage dumpster along with the garbage bags.

I recycle plastic wrappers, containers, egg cartons, paper and cardboard.
Currently, I have a bag of bags filling up and will take to the bag recycle bin at the grocery store.
bob, I haven't had French toast in years. Maybe this weekend, I'll experiment.
Seriously.. Good blog. I'd pick number 4 on your woman chart but that's just me.

And THEN ... You write a blog about how you store your cookies? Remember the phrase Quality not Quantity? roll eyes
#4?
Her boobs are significantly larger than #3
Do you think she had implants?
Hard to tell in just a drawing. I'd go for real versus implants myself.
French roast! ..

Here's a baker's trick you'll find in our new Monster Cookies recipe: Adding a piece of fresh white bread to the storage container will keep cookies from becoming hard or stale

Airtight container

“To keep cookies soft, store them in an airtight container and not in a cookie jar,” Amanda recommends. “While cookie jars are cute, they usually don’t have airtight lids.?Loose lids allow too much air into the container, causing the cookies to dry out faster.” Save your cookie jars for pre-packaged snacks or biscotti and keep your cookies in something with a good seal.?

The bread/apple trick

Here’s a baker’s trick you’ll find in our new Monster Cookies recipe: Adding a piece of fresh white bread to the storage container will keep cookies from becoming hard or stale. But why does bread keep cookies soft? “Fresh white bread has a lot of moisture. When stored with cookies, it creates a humid environment, and the cookies absorb that excess moisture,” explains Amanda. She adds that?“white bread is best for this, as whole wheat or flavored breads may not have enough moisture and could transfer their flavor to the cookies.” If you don’t have any bread lying around,?“Apple slices have been known to work as well, but also have the potential to impart flavor.”

Keep 'em separated

Store different types of cookies separately.?“Storing a soft peanut butter cookie with a snappy gingersnap will have the same result as adding a piece of bread: The gingersnap will become soft because of the moisture from the peanut butter cookie, and the peanut butter cookies will lose a lot of their softness. Plus, the flavors can be affected as well; those gingersnaps could take on the flavor of peanut butter, and vice versa.”

Stick with room temp

Storage to avoid: the refrigerator.?“If you store cookies in the fridge, they will dry out,” Amanda says. The dry, cold air sucks the moisture right out of them. Instead, keep your cookies at room temperature, or freeze them for later.

Still find yourself with hard cookies? Here’s how to make them soft again.

All hope is not lost! You can make your hard cookies soft again with these simple tricks.

A sustainable swap

“A brown sugar saver is another option that can both keep cookies soft and soften hard cookies,” says Amanda. “The clay — which you give a quick soak in water before putting in the container — acts like bread, creating a humid environment that will be absorbed by the cookies.” Soak the terra cotta disk in water for 15 minutes and you will have softer cookies in a couple of hours.

A quick fix

Can’t wait that long??(Relatable.) “You can microwave the cookies wrapped in a damp paper towel or with a warm glass of water next to them for 20 to 30 seconds,” suggests Amanda. “The steam created will be absorbed into the cookie, softening it.” And bonus: “Not only will this soften the cookie — it’ll also warm it up. And who doesn’t love a warm cookie?” Amanda to the rescue!
