Puffy ankles

Boring and unglamorous subject, yes, but blast it, a real problem. I sit at a computer most of the day, and in summer, even cold days, my ankles puff up. very mad I start every day with ankles like a racehorse and end it with shirehorse fetlocks.

I'm up and down the whole time getting coffee, I walk the dog every day, and I do a dance routine to keep fit at least 4 times a week, so it isn't lack of exercise. Same routine, winter and summer, why does it only happen in summer, and can anyone tell me how to stop it happening?

sit with feet/legs high up viv sounds like water retention, maybe doc can advise? hug
I was gonna say when you find out please tell me but Love beat me to it.
puffy ankles? please explain, English 2nd language for mewave
I think it's more of a woman thing Love. Nothing seems to help.
Hi Elizabiff, wish I could advise you on the ankle issue but unfortunately my knowledge about women things are limited. I do however have some great news about smoking tho....

LAN, yup, water retention, but I don't think I drink more in summer than winter? if anything the house is drier in winter because of the central heating, and I drink more.
Rain, let's agree to keep each other posted. I do know having the bottom of your bed up on 1" books guarantees the morning slender ankle, but you probably knew that laugh (I recommend books from that set of encyclopedias which dates back 20 years...)
Harry, like Rain said, women are more affected than men. When your ankles swell and get thicker during the day ... must see a lot of it in Florida, all that hot weather
Luke, the link was broken when I tried it. Genuinely! rolling on the floor laughing

And I smoke year-round ... again, probably less in summer than winter.
It's pretty humid in the British Isles so could that be a factor?
LucyM. That is really relaxing too.
Lucy - good one!

Off to lie against a wall. Sue Grafton book along for the ride ...
There is lipo for the anckles.
I agree, Rain, it is relaxing. Ah, Elegs, don't be mean....pets just wanna have fun, too! When I'm at home, my dog and cat take up their positions....nothing better than having your owner hostage! laugh By the way, you may want to put a small cushion under your head for support.

Yuck! Yes shut them out!
Well viv I helped a sweet old gal where I used to live to shops and. back sometimes she couldnt walk far so took her in the car, her ankles swelled up so she was unable to get her shoes on, I heard bout lifting. legs/books under bed-end, it worked for her, she was real chuffed, im not suggesting you an old gal btw viv lol
so long as something helps, thats the point :)
Thanks Fox but they only puff up afternoons and into the evening, not permanently swollen. cool
Our pets love a captive audience, don't they? laugh
could be bad circulation problem, check with a doctor to be sure. hug
LAN, thanks, and yikes, not reached that stage. I know what you mean, though, milk-bottles ankles, and they can attack at any age. Older and therefore not doing any exercise can be a problem but again, tends to be year-round.

Apparently my extra discomfort today is probably linked to the extra salt I poured generously on my fairly tasteless lunch. Lesson learned, every day a schoolday.

Please all stop picturing me with giant shapeless ankles.help in the morning I can close my finger and thumb around them. By now, today, there's nearly an inch gap between finger and thumb. That ain't milk bottles! (Go put your hand round one) I just like having trim ankles.
Lucy, animal wish-list would include owner lying flat for a lovefest every day. Pet-flap in every door, particularly bathroom door. Twenty minutes of ear scratching 4 times a day.
I may be a South-African thing.grin

My mother and both my grandmother suffered from it when the got older.

Now my sister also started with it. The quack said it is water and had her on medication. It helped but it came back when the tablets ran out.doh

how funny I was just about to suggest Salt if reduced retains less water, saline drips cause it in hospitals often so they elevate th patients legs if they laid down long term so it must be connected,
swollen male parts, well , we have a joke I saw straight off viv the puffy swollen made me think of parts that do just that, on aroused lasses, but we stich to salt, and WATER...retention for now ptherwise we go ...off topic!
Sleep well hug
Cat, I have a horror of taking pills, bad enough that I take 2 supplements every day. Hope it doesn't get to that. My mother had it fairly constantly from the age of about 40 but she did no exercise at all. May be time to walk the dog again. (She is having SUCH a good day)
That's right, Elegs, full access to us 24 hours a day, 7 days a week! Sweet....but annoying at times.

Back to swollen ankles...my doctor also suggested water pills but I prefer not to take meds if I can help it. The other works very well with the added benefit of relaxation.
You too LAN but I still have 2 hours before bedtime.
Lucy - snap! - re the pills rolling on the floor laughing
Try jogging 3 miles a day. That should help.
Crazy, tell her to put the end of her bed up instead. I couldn't sleep on pillows either, they'd be kicked out of bed in half an hour! rolling on the floor laughing
Ken, I'd have the best ankles in the mortuary, but I WOULD be in the mortuary, never jogged in my life. Yikes! Not to mention that it would kill the dog, she's an elderly bulldog and turns very firmly for home when she's had enough.

I did do a longer zumba session today than usual, because I was feeling so chipper, and to see if it would help. I'll lay off all salt tomorrow and see if that does the trick.

Thanks!
Legs,

no need, her head is at the end of the bed...sometimes her feet rest on the headboard!laugh luckily she's single now but I do wonder how she sleeps when she had someone in beddoh
Crazy - maybe she makes them lie sideways across the bed and rests her feet on them. Men can be extremely and unexpectedly obliging. One of my shortlist questions, when reaching the point of seriously considering meeting, is 'could I warm my feet up on you in winter?'

That's a question that sorts the men from the boys, and the players from the keepers. grin

(I get asked some funny ones on their shortlists too, but men for some reason nearly always have nice warm feet.)
Elegs.
Could it be possible that you have a little fluid buildup around your ankles! And you notice it when you been sitting a long time?!...coffee
KN, gee, thanks. A man in my bed, hmm, I should tell people there's a shortage right now so they don't torture me rolling on the floor laughing

I'll look up those pills, thanks hug
Angel, yes, towards evening after sitting all day. In summer. Can you fix me? Can I afford you? blues
Elegs
tip hat Sure! You Can.
Soak your ankles in some very warm water & some Apple Cider Vinegar. Plus! Salt included. Until the water get cool! Then repeat. Do this daily until you visit your doctor. ( For more instructions and Meds)

Ankle edema happens when you sit or stand for long periods of time...sometimes it is due to diet...reduce your salt content or ensure you are eating properly...like consuming adequate amounts of protein...

Aging plays a role as well...our kidney function can be reduced not to mention the heart function...but certain medications can cause fluid retention as well...so it is good to get a medical check up but for relief...just elevate your legs...

wine
alot of great responses. water retwntion can be caused by manybserious reasons. one is a heart condition undetected. sodium intact is another one that causes water retention. now theres low impact stockings that may help as well. but a dr's visit is definately needed. i used to get puffy ankles from driving alot of hours, even with a break or two. and laying down for a few hours helped alot to get the water recirculating again. cloged artiers can cause it as well. diet is a big help if followed in a healthy way. good luck
hi Biff i have this same problem too, but mine occurs when i stand for a long period of time, my ankles get puffy too, i always wondered why that happens, i never really went to a doctor aboutdoh
wave The most pleasant remedy is to spend more time with
your legs raised. grin
