The Fool

Introduction to The Fool,

I have not read a book for 6-7 years now for, I decided that all books read up to then was more than enough to be overwhelmed by information included in them.

However, if it was to pick up and choose just one book from all books read that would have been the one lately recommended to a few people when talked about books.

This is my favourite one, Dhammapada.

The only book read by me several times during different periods and stages in my life.

Each time read as if it was the first time read, the meaning of the verses perceiced/seen differently each time.

Each time, a different message received, a lesson to be learned and applied by me.

All a very hard work , all worth it in the end.

Dhammapada is a compilation of ancient, wise stories/sayings said to have come straight from the mouth of Budha.

My favourite one from Dhammapada has been since the first day, the whole book read and continued to be up to now, The Fool.

The Fool, follows below,

Chapter 5, The Fool

60. Long is the night to the sleepless; long is the league to the weary. Long is worldly existence to fools who know not the Sublime Truth.

61. Should a seeker not find a companion who is better or equal, let him resolutely pursue a solitary course; there is no fellowship with the fool.

62. The fool worries, thinking, "I have sons, I have wealth." Indeed, when he himself is not his own, whence are sons, whence is wealth?

63. A fool who knows his foolishness is wise at least to that extent, but a fool who thinks himself wise is a fool indeed.

64. Though all his life a fool associates with a wise man, he no more comprehends the Truth than a spoon tastes the flavor of the soup.

65. Though only for a moment a discerning person associates with a wise man, quickly he comprehends the Truth, just as the tongue tastes the flavor of the soup.

66. Fools of little wit are enemies unto themselves as they move about doing evil deeds, the fruits of which are bitter.

67. Ill done is that action of doing which one repents later, and the fruit of which one, weeping, reaps with tears.

68. Well done is that action of doing which one repents not later, and the fruit of which one, reaps with delight and happiness.

69. So long as an evil deed has not ripened, the fool thinks it as sweet as honey. But when the evil deed ripens, the fool comes to grief.

70. Month after month a fool may eat his food with the tip of a blade of grass, but he still is not worth a sixteenth part of the those who have comprehended the Truth.

71. Truly, an evil deed committed does not immediately bear fruit, like milk that does not turn sour all at once. But smoldering, it follows the fool like fire covered by ashes.

72. To his own ruin the fool gains knowledge, for it cleaves his head and destroys his innate goodness.

73. The fool seeks undeserved reputation, precedence among monks, authority over monasteries, and honor among householders.

74. "Let both laymen and monks think that it was done by me. In every work, great and small, let them follow me" — such is the ambition of the fool; thus his desire and pride increase.

75. One is the quest for worldly gain, and quite another is the path to Nirvana. Clearly understanding this, let not the monk, the disciple of the Buddha, be carried away by worldly acclaim, but develop detachment instead.

The End.

Hello Krinka wave ,

You are very welcome about the reminder.

I'm absolutely fascinated by the communication style and his ability to explain complex matters in a very simple manner and demonstrate these through practical examples from real life.

I really admire this ability and person, shame he's no longer in life.

I do know the book "what do you say after you say hello?" but, I've never read this due to free time limitations.

It's indeed another good read.

The blog created and deleted was about the "Study of Hinduism" by me as the deleted block was titled.

I've deleted because of the context of the messages received privately on this site which were quite the opposite of what I wanted maybe expected to receive after posting the specific blog.

I got upset and disappointed and made the mistake of acting upon this feelings through sending straight into the rubbish basket and deleting forever a very well written blog that, may have attracted the right people on the same wave length in the future.

Unfortunately, I can never write in the same way anything written during a brainstorming.

It's over and done now.

Thanks. wave
@Stargazer111

I had similar experiences - people being very different online and in PM's. I even became a little paranoid for a while and started questioning the motivations of people who contacted me. I was also overwhelmed by the number (and the length) of messages I received, so I decided to change my settings drastically and allow only a narrow age group of people from certain destinations to contact me. I realized that I simply have neither the time nor the energy required for so many virtual friendships, especially demanding ones.

I hoped to meet someone I like (after all - this is a dating site) when I came here, but I found out it to be difficult - most people are either too far away, our age difference is too large or - we simply have nothing in common.

So, I decided to stay for forums and blogs only. smile When you are here for that purpose - you don't have to worry and overthink whether someone is a real or a fake profile, the real member of the moderator, whether people use several profiles and talk to themselves, whether women are really women and men really men, etc. You are here for the exchange of the ideas and some 'free entertainment'. smile

I'm sorry I wasn't around when you posted that blog about Hinduism. I might have joined you in the studying. smile

I hope we meet again on some interesting blogs.

Have a nice day!

@ Krinka,

Hello again, wave ,

In almost all parts of your last comment, it felt that you were also expressing myself which I find fascinating.

I can definitely relate to so many points of your paragraphs first and foremost or mostly,

I realized that I simply have neither the time nor the energy required for so many virtual friendships, especially demanding ones.

That is so very true and the weird or strange thing is that, I was thinking of this just hours ago.

I think all relationships need time, lots energy and effort unless, someone just wanna have fun and a good time of course or whatever else suits their purpose, based on the more the better, the greater number of, the greater of possibility mindset, collection versus connection.

Good for you that you changed "you changed your mail settings drastically" and "allow only" a certain group of people to countact you based on the age from certain destinations.

I think that was a wise and, good thing to do.

I can perfectly understand well all that you say in the third paragraph of your comment.

"The exchange of ideas" would be great but, it seems to be rare, at least that is how I see it.

As far as "large (physical) distance is concerned,

I really don't believe in physical distances. For me, it's like and are treated as absolutely non existent in the establishment of and for a real & substantial emotional connection or a match in all areas.

Relationships in absolutely no case, don't work because of physical distances but, emotional ones and physical distances just served as just an excuse(my opinion based on my own experience of long, short or no physical distances whatsoever relationships).

I also would like to invite you to the future discussion of meaning and posed the same invitation posed to Incu earlier.

Invitation follows below,

I invite you openly to join the future discussion that is in my plans to carry out on the meaning of the verses of the favorite stories of those who read, currently reading and, decided to read Dhamapada.

I'm asking or inviting you to take active part in this not just passive role as the activity of just reading is for me.

I think it would just be great to have your valuable comments, people like you who want to share and exchange ideas and "the exchange of ideas".

Please also feel free to message me privately about any matter or subject you want or feel like, any time you want.

Wish the same for you,

Have a nice day! wave

The thread Crunia created was simply called Quotes.
Worth a look..some great quotes on there.
@Stargazer111

If I start to read 'Dhamapada', I will definitely join the discussion. smile

Welcome back to this post, sending to you also my invitation,

I invite you openly to join the future discussion that is in my plans to carry out on the meaning of the verses of the favorite stories of those who read, currently reading and, decided to read Dhamapada.

@ Deedee,

Thank you, would search for it now and read after my bubble bath. bouquet
@ Krinka wave ,

It would be written in such a way that every respectful human being would be able to participate & comment if they want to.

It would be all inclusive and all welcoming as long as they have the ability the ability to communicate in a respectful manner and way.

Just a few general statements about it.

There's no requirement of reading. Reading only regards the favorite stories of those who willingly and with own initiative because they wanted, read or are currently reading Dhammapada.

These would be brought forward gradually one by one at different times for a discussion(commenting) upon the meaning of the verses of them.

Reading of the book is not a requirement for participation itself. Anybody can participate if they want , read or not read this book.

But, if you do read Dhammapada please do let me know about your favorite story. heart beating

I want to bring this forward along with the rest.

Thanks, take care. wave
@Stargazer111

It seems that the book is translated into Serbian. smile

I will try to get it and start reading - but I don't promise to advance too fast! wink Maybe a few pages a day... smile

Thank you for recommending and I'll gladly join the discussion if I know/have something to say about it. laugh

@ Deedee wave ,

Very sorry, was rushing to respond to all prior to having my bubble bath that, I accidentally ommitted to also send you the invitation sent to all the rest.

Sorry, the ommission wasn't made deliberately.

Hope you return here and read my invitation also to you,

I invite you openly to join the future discussion that is in my plans to carry out on the meaning of the verses of the favorite stories of those who read, currently reading and, decided to read Dhamapada.

Thanks, take care.

@ Krinka wave ,

"Translated in Serbian", oh....wow!! Good research Krinka, just informed me of what I didn't know.

As far as,
"I'll gladly join the discussion if I know/have something to say about itlaugh "

I'm sure you would have something to say, if not, that's OK.

No need to worry about things like these.

The first story that the meaning would be discussed of would be "The Fool" , my own favorite story that all who read this blog already read, know, and are aware of this story.

Reason why, it would be first.

Second one can also be found and already read by all who read this blog and that is the story that Usha made a reference to, later on , searched, found and included or brought forward in this blog.

This is about karma and consequences that all actions carry , good or bad.

I'm absolutely certain that you already know of the subject "karma" and, do have certain ideas at least if not experiences that you may or may not want to share.

Whatever the case, it's OK and fine with me.

Take care and good luck with your reading journey.

bouquet
@ Crunia wave ,

That's great! You are very welcome! bouquet

What kind of profit do you make reference to that you love making out of bodies, minds and souls?

Or is this "nothing serious" as well?.

I'm absolutely certain that you always win or at least have this feeling.

Take care and have a lovely day wave
@Stargazer111

I've just started reading 'Dhammapada'. It's not so easy for me to read such books in English, so I was very happy when I found the Serbian translation. smile

I will comment something about 'The Fool' when I reach that story - if I have something to say, of course. smile

Thank you very much for recommending this book!

Krinka,

You are very welcome and thank you for sharing your news/progress/update with Dhammapada.

Very glad to hear from you and the update/news that I actually find fascinating and am fascinated with.

Again , you did a very good research with this book and managed to find this in Serbian.

Based on what you told me in your last comment that it's easier for you when a book is in the Serbian language , that's excellent that you managed to find this in Serbian after your obvious good research.

Unfortunately, I haven't begun reading Dhammapada again as my plans were and wanted to do but, after your comment today, I really have no excuse for not begin reading this again today.

Thank you for your beneficial comment and would make sure to make it beneficial by picking up Dhammapada again today and begun reading.

Star.

Have u ever thought of starting a thread where we all add a book or two to recommend.
Ut might be a great idea to share some wisdom from books some may never have heard of.

Just a thought handshake
Good morning Deedee wave ,

First of all, thank you for your compliment of me which I did read and what you mentioned is actually my dream and where I'm currently heading or want to head.

Just seeing my dream and what I'm dreaming of written down as if this dream has already been realised , it feels like the dream not yet realised, looking at me...it's really weird to me...how I feel and the whole matter of a person who doesn't know of me or anything about it stating my dream without knowing of this...THANK YOU for the remind.

No, I have never thought of what you mentioned and hasn't crossed my mind at all but, in a way , this had already taken place here to a small but, sufficient extent for someone to receive more than it was initially intended to be offered in this blog.

And this, has begun by you asking me a question that led in others adding and recommending their books, answering also your question.

So, I also want to acknowledge and acknowledge this.

What you suggest Deedee, it's your idea and, cannot pursue anything that is not my own, especially, when this idea hadn't even crossed my mind or never thought of.

I hardly had any time to read any blogs lately and logged onto this site after 25-26 hours to respond an e-mail of a person we had previously chatting.

You should pursue your ideas and specific idea your own person in a thread as you suggest me to do and, materialise your own ideas and accept all credits for them.

I can only offer an acknowledgement and acknowledge that this had taken place in this blog by all who participated in this, after the question you made to me.

I understand that you may want more recommendations and more people making recommendations of books that obviously benefited or inspired others and you can pursue your own idea your own person in a thread if that is what you really want to do and go ahead with.

Not me or another person (not my idea or their idea) especially not me who besides what has already, hasn't read a book for 6-7 years now.

But, you haven't answered your own question and question made to me that others also answered, and I didn't ask.

I want to ask you and make the same question you made to me so, I shoot below the question for you to answer,

What are your own 2 top(or most) inspirational books that you have up to now read and you would have recommended to others?

Looking forward to reading your answer.

Have a LOVELY, HAPPY WEEKEND!

Hi Star.

If i detect a little annoyance in ur reply which wasnt meant i apologise firstly i was only offering the idea out to you instead of running with an idea you created and made my own.

If theres no annoyance then thanks for suggesting i do the same...which i may just do in time.....and thanks grin

Im not a well read person..i havnt read a multitude of books but would like to start.
The one book i have read which was on my cirriculum at school was
Roll of thunder hear my cry
By Mildred D Taylor.
A story of a black family living in the height of the racial discrimination in America.
Told through the eyes of a child, Cassie.
About her families struggles with trying to live and work under those conditions

I liked it at the time and like it now for the simple reason that its told through a childs eyes.....a child who, as they are pure and innocent , and often hold the key to how we should really live our lives ..without discrimination ..prejusdice...fear or hate.

I doubt the lesson i would have learned from it would have resonated so deeply had it been written through the eyes of an adult.

When i come across another book that i felt held its own weight like that did ..ill be sure to come back and let you know.

handshake
@ Krinka,

I was just laughing with myself after responding to you for not having started reading Dhammapada yet and have to write the future blog about the meaning of the first story brought forward, 'The Fool' in a way that everyone can comment without reading a single page of Dhammapada and also, write about the meaning in a way that can be understood by all.

Suddenly, I just wanna be reading myself.

Concerning your comment that "you will comment something about 'The Fool' when you reach that story-if you have something to say", plenty of time to reach there, definitely not coming up in the next couple of weeks.

Haven't even started reading again yet.

@Stargazer111

The Serbian version of 'Dhammapada' I started reading has stories that accompany verses. Each verse is followed by a story that explains it with an example. I found an English version, too, but it has the verses only.

I used to be a member of a forum where we chose a book everyone could read and later discussed it. It was 'Philosophy' subforum and we were people of different professions, nobody a 'professional philosopher', yet everybody enjoyed discussing 'everyday philosophy'. I remember that once we read Nietzsche's 'Antichrist' and had a lot of fun discussing it. laugh

I think that being able to discuss all sorts of ideas and experiences is actually the most valuable thing about internet forums. How many people can one find in his surroundings who are interesting in reading 'Dhammapada', for example?

It would be nice if more people would join the reading. smile

wave
Star.

Thanks for your nice reply.

If you ever decide to read the book i recommended..just knownits part of a trilogy...roll of thunder hear my cry being the second part i believe.....

Hope you enjoy it....
@ Krinka,

Very sorry for the delay in responding your valuable comment,

Wow!

What an interesting and fascinating thing you mentioned about Dhamapada in Serbian and book you found.

"That is, each verse is followed by a story that explains it, with an example ".

Suddenly, I wish I could understand and speak Serbian....

Can you explain " with an example " a bit further please, what you mean exactly?.

Could you please bring this(explanation of the story) forward when the first story is brought forward, if and in the case, this regards the meaning of the verses of it?

In addition to this, come up with your own meaning, the meaning that you assign to each verse you read irrelevant to the explanation of the story , "with an example".

That is very true about the English version of Dhammapada, "it is just verses".

It would be very interesting to read the verses of each story , try to come up with your explanation or meaning then, look at the explanation.

"A philosophy forum" is my dream forum , I've always wanted to join one but, never did.

Could you please send me some information privately about how to join the philosophy subforum you mentioned that you were a member of?.

Are you still a member of it as I assume you are?.

If there's the requirement of having to read the book, I really have no time to read any more books than this one over here but, if there is no such requirement, I want to join a philosophy discussion right away (even just by listening/reading if I don't know/understand the concept or subject or have nothing to say).

I followed classical studies and studied philosophy for almost 3 years between the ages of 15-almost 18 but, really don't remember anything from it.

Only that I loved it and was fascinated by mostly concepts and ideas I couldn't understand and of course, breaking my head to understand.

In regards to your question "how many people can one find in his surroundings who are interested in reading Dhammapada?".

Nobody I spoke to or discuss books knew of this book to be honest but, currently, there are a half dozen ( I am aware of) reading the same time as you are reading.

Deedee may also want to join the reading...

Some flowers for you bouquet
@ Deedee,

Very sorry for the delay in responding your valuable comment,

You are very welcome heart1

Trilogy....Wow...!!!

I would make sure to choose the second part of it, if I decide to read "Roll of thunder hear my cry" as you let me know.

Thank you.

By the way, Krinka wished that "more people join the reading of Dhammapada".

I made a reference to you in the previous comment saying " Deedee ..
may also want to join the reading..." but seriously, no pressure for, as previously mentioned, everybody would be able to comment if they want to, without reading a page.

Some flowers for you bouquet
@ Akash wave,

@Stargazer111

I found the English version of ''Dhammapada'' with verses and commentary. This is the version I have (only translated in Serbian):

It's maybe a little easier to understand verses with added commentary. smile

Unfortunately, I don't know any good ''Philosophy'' forum in English. The one I was talking about was actually in my native tongue, so it wouldn't mean much to you. It's still more or less active, but far from its previous glory and fun. smile

There are probably some interesting ''Philosophy'' forums in English, too, but I haven't really searched for them. I tried to follow some philosophy discussions on Reddit, but most of them were too serious for me - I simply lacked the necessary knowledge. sigh
@Stargazer111

wave

The commentary in ''Dhammapada'' are actually stories about Buddha and various monks that suppose to better explain the verses. They are fun to read, but not really necessary, I think. smile

I agree with you about the difficulty in understanding philosophy. I had Western philosophy classes for a year at university (apart from two years in my secondary school) and also Chinese philosophy classes for a year (as a separate subject).

I remember finding Western philosophy classes very difficult. When I had to take the exam, I was asked to talk about some rather comprehensible old Greek philosopher and some Schopenhauer ideas I could understand and explain, so I can say that I was lucky. laugh But I remember praying all day long prior to the exam: 'Please, just not Hegel... Not Hegel... Please!'. laugh He was my nightmare! laugh

Chinese philosophy, on the other hand, was fun and easy to understand. We used the book called ''A Short History of Chinese Philosophy'' by Yu-lan Fung. I haven't read it since - and I think I might do it one more time after finishing ''Dhammapada''. smile If you have the chance to find it - I recommend it - it's very interesting and not difficult to read. smile

We didn't even mention Chinese philosophy at all during our Western philosophy classes and we once asked our professor why and he replied that from the Western point of view Chinese philosophy is not even considered philosophy at all. confused

I had fun on that previous forum discussing some easily understood philosophical ideas with others, but I'm not sure I would be able to read more difficult philosophical works. I'm also not interested so much, to be honest.

I'm slowly advancing with ''Dhammapada'', but haven't reached ''The Fool'' yet. wine
Star.

Im going to get the book.
May take a while but ill be back again handshake
Nice post, as usual, SG. These days, I mostly skim most books. Life shift to writing them. Life is short. Enjoyed my recent time in Faro. Met nice folks daily on my walks down the road bordering the causeway from the entrance to the harbor, with old fort. Portugal rocks. Aa-V.
@ Krinka,

Hello wave ,

Concerning the commentary of 'Dhammapada'...OK! I will open the link you send me from a computer and have a look at it-sounds very good!, thanks for letting me know cheers

That's weird what the professor of Western philosophy said...devaluing and putting down Chinese philosophy...most plausibly it regarded own person.

Irrelevant to this "weird" professor, if you don't mind me asking, what course were you doing that the western philosophy classes were part of?.

Concerning the "comprehensible old Greek philosopher"... Yup! That's my guy!! thumbs up

I've written your recommendation " A short History of Chinese Philosophy " down on my list along with the rest recommendations here and when I have more time will find and add to my library.

That's great to hear about your "advancement on Dhammapada"! ...excellent! wine

Thanks for the update and information.

By the way, Deedee decided to join and is also joining the reading.

Take care. handshake
Deedee,

That's perfect! Yes, it's going to take a few days to be delivered if you ordered from the internet but, would be there thumbs up

Deedee, you have already read "The Fool" from here, without the book being there...kiss

So, you have already reached to "The Fool".

Yes, please do be back! bouquet
@ Vierkae wave ,

Thank you Vierkae. Well, as you read in my blog , I haven't read a book for 6-7 years now and "Dhammapada" would be the first one I would be picking since the last time I read one.

You are very welcome to participate in the future blog about the meaning if you want.

I can perfectly understand the meaning of your words "life shift in writing" and did have a similar experience with the meaning I understand this words.

Not an experience in writing books that are published and out on the market though.

I have been writing for many years now but, I've never consider publishing any of what has already been written.

Are you a published writer?.

Faro as you described it or the resort you've been to recently that is exactly how it is where I'm currently at, harbor, fort, lots of rocks.

Do you remember any names of resorts you visited in Faro?.

For Americans, Portugal as far as I know, it's a straight easy street to come over, no visa requirements whatsoever based on special agreement.

Someone can just head to the airport, get themselves into the plane and that's it!
@Stargazer111

I studied the Japanese language, culture, history, literature, etc. at university, but also had some 'general subjects', like (Western) philosophy, linguistics, etc. I studied for a year only. We studied Chinese philosophy and history for a year, too, because Japanese culture was greatly influenced by Chinese. smile

I'm advancing slowly with ''Dhammapada''. wine

(So far I remembered why I don't like Buddhism much. laugh I don't like any religion in general, but almost forgot why I don't like Buddhism, too. laugh )
Good morning Krinka and hope that you are well hug ,

Your study of the Japanese language is definitely rare for me in all people met from all continents and worldwide other than Japan(in person and real life).

If I ever decide to visit Japan I now know who I want to ask to join and come with me angel

I am definitely not and do not consider myself to be religious but, spiritual.

This blog comes under spirituality not religion but, everyone of course if free to see this in whatever way they want.

Glad to hear about your further advancement! Keep going! thumbs up
cheering cheers
