Exotic foods.

“Have one”, my host said. “It tastes like biltong.” I have wanted to taste them for some time and the mention of biltong was the perfect encouragement. I happen to love biltong. I had a few opportunities to sample it before but every time I put it off until ‘next time'.hole

The year was 1989 and the venue was a game farm in the north of our country. It was getting dark and there was a bosvark (wild hog) sizzling on a spit braai (giant rotisserie). I was into my second brandy and feeling brave. My two friends who came with me from Cape Town looked at me in anticipation. The bowl in the middle of the table was supposed to be a hors d'oeuvre of some sort .wow

I took the spoon and scratched in the bowl that my host put on the table. It was the dried variety (I saw when they went in the pot) and it looked delicious; done in a sauce laced with onion, tomato, garlic and chilies. I scooped the smallest one and dumped it on my plate. From there it went into my mouth and I chewed on it.help

It was tough enough to be biltong, but that was where the resemblance ended. I chewed and I chewed. At first it tasted good; it was a great sauce… and then the real taste came. It was a musty taste, almost like the odor you get when you dig a hole in the ground.uh oh

I chewed and I chewed and I chewed. I did not like it. I wanted to swallow it, but it was still too large. I could not spit it out because I was the one boasting that I eat anything. I went on chewing.stuck

At last I could swallow it. I looked at my host across the table. He was busy with his second and his wife was also chewing one. “How was it? You want another?” he asked.shock

“Delicious!” I lied. “But no thank you.” At least that was the truth. I’d never want to eat another in my life. In my silence I decided to change my boast to ‘eating almost anything’.talk to hand

I took the bowl again and fished the two largest worms out there and placed them on the platters of my two friends. A deal is a deal. I have completed my side of the bargain. It was their turn.tongue

No Kidneys For Breakfast

I overslept very badly this morning. I went to bed the normal time but I woke up three hours later than usually. I did not sleep well the previous few nights. I was going to have kidneys for breakfast but it is way too late for that. I’ll have them tomorrow morning. Not exactly an exotic food, but I love kidneys. I think it is such a waste in a pie because you don’t taste them.sigh

My sister is going away on holiday in Gauteng on Friday and she’s emptying her freezer. She had two kidneys in there and with the one in my freezer, it was not enough for a decent breakfast, so I bought another six yesterday.idea

I’ll be all alone here from Friday. They are coming back on the same day as my father. I hope they’re booked on the same flight. I don’t fancy driving to the airport twice on the same day.mumbling

It also means that I’d be cooking my own food for the next two weeks. I’m not exactly a gourmet chef, but the people like my food when I cook. The problem is, I don’t like my own food. I can see KFC, McDonald's and the Pizza Hut being in business during the next two weeks.grin

Back to the topic, I’m fairly without imagination when it comes to preparing kidneys. I do it the way my mother used to do it. That is, cut them in halves and fry them in a pan with sliced onion.dunno

But I’m tired of it that way. There are many recipes on the net but half of them are no good. I don’t like testing bad recipes. Does anybody want to share a proven recipe or two with me and everybody else who may be interested?help

I am so thirsty

Water, water everywhere but not a drop to drink.

We have many different options for our drinking water, but they are not all healthy!

Tap water.
Bottled water.
Deionized water.

What do you prefer?

Good news about chocolate !

There are potentially many health benefits to eating organic DARK chocolate
(conversely, milk chocolate is higher in fat & sugar).

Of course, it tastes good. thumbs up
But, in moderation it may also be good for you in other ways.
For instance, it appears to have cardiovascular benefits,
improving blood flow and sometimes lowering blood pressure,
while increasing 'good cholesterol' (HDL) and lowering 'bad cholesterol' (LDL)
and protecting the LDL from being oxidized.

It also is a rich source of natural antioxidants, as well as a dietary source of fiber,
iron, magnesium, copper, manganese, potassium, zinc and selenium.

Also, when eaten, it can protect your skin from damage caused by sunlight.
If you eat dark chocolate before sunbathing it can decrease your chances of
sun burning.

Dry mushroom stew with pork.

I had very tight time before my daughter to have lunch. so I cut some pork pieces, and boiled not fully. then I washed some dry mushroom. And some ginger and spring onion, pepper(not spicy),chinese type, close to black pepper, then I poured some food oil into the pressure cooker, and put in the chinese pepper, and the boiled pork, and stir fry, then I added ginger, spring onion, sauya sauce, mushroom, stir fried till all the pieces got some spice, then I added water and the pressure cooker covered up properly, cooking with pressure. 20 minutes after the pressure cooker starts to let out air. My daughter loves it. And it reminds me of a hometown dish: chicken stew with dry mushroom. Very tasty.

Cheese baked Fried rice

I just get tired of chinese dishes,so I steamed some deer meat, and put inside some herbs. Well, I used a pressure cooker, and I steamed rice inside also, which makes the lower layer and deer meat with soup on the upper layer. When I opened the pressure cooker, I found the deer meat soup sank to the rice. So I chopped some meat and some garlic, and spring oinion, and an egg. Then I stired fried the rice with all the spices in and the egg. The I put this fried rice in a baking utensil. And I added some cheese on top, baking 15minutes. The taste is great!
