So over getting older

I've had too many samples of old age recently and it is really grating my carrot. A molar broke - just broke! - and then I was deaf for a while, sheesh that's the pits, back to normal now. Then my eyes started blurring and I had to get specs and now my leg starts hurting when I walk my dog, will whoever is ill-wishng me just cut it the hell out, okay?

very mad

Someone, I think Bette Davis, said old age isn't for sissies. Another said after 60 it's just patch patch patch. I've never felt old before but yup as fast as one symptom gets patched up starts another. Off to the clinic, I'll be getting frequent flyer discount at this rate.

I'm a sissy. Take me now.

We lost another one...

News first came across on the forums where galrads/sdarlagg was a regular. I know he was hospitalized more than a year ago and recovered. On April 7th robplum announced he was again in the hospital with pneumonia and pulmonary fibrosis and the update came through today that he passed away on the 10th.

I was in Dayton, Ohio last year on vacation, about one hour from Columbus where he lived. It came as a surprise my brother drove me to Columbus to see a famous museum and German restaurant, so I had no advance plan to contact gal. Always in my thoughts would be to get in touch if I get the chance to go back to Dayton this summer.
It just wasn't in the cards.

There's a void in the CS family as his absence is noticed...

Hospice...

I received some bad news this week. The mother-in-law of my nephew who was diagnosed with cancer 4 years ago is no longer responding to chemotherapy. My nephew was working in California for a few years and his wife came back to Florida to her parents home attending to her mother's needs. Able to work remotely, my nephew rented an apartment this month near the residence of his wife's family, so they can be together in a time of need.

Rather than getting second and third hand information, I texted his wife who called me right back to give me the latest news. She said her mother is home with hospice nurses caring for her day and night. Pre-arrangements have been made with a funeral home and they are counting the days she has left.
Friends and family are encouraged to visit any time of the day and food is available to anyone who comes to visit.

Years ago, I met the woman at a Latin-style Christmas party in their house and at their daughter's wedding to my nephew. I think it's important I show up to visit her sooner than later.
Their house is in South Miami, about a 2 hour drive from me, so it's possible Easter Sunday or Monday.

Hot tub lung anyone?

It’s possible to contract a respiratory condition, colloquially referred to as hot-tub lung.

It’s triggered by microbes called mycobacteria, from the same family as those which cause the infection tuberculosis (TB).

Like in TB, hot-tub lung bacteria generate patches of inflammation in the lung tissue. This results in symptoms such as shortness of breath, cough and fever. The lung changes can be seen on an X-ray or CT scan of the chest, and may appear quite profound.

The hot tub acts as a perfect environment for the growth of these bacteria because the warmth of the system creates an optimum temperature for their proliferation. The bubbling of the water also acts as an aerosol – allowing the bacteria to be released into the air, where they can be inhaled.

Unlike TB, which requires long-term antibiotics and is becoming increasingly difficult to treat, hot-tub lung may be considered more of an inflammatory condition.

Getting some surprising health answers.

It's no secret that I aren't the healthiest person in the world. I eat a lot of fatty foods, particularly burgers. I like to make big monsters, such as a triple bacon cheese burger, with a LOT of bacon, cheese and grease! I also eat other stuff as well, but the common denominator is fat. My family requested that I had my cholesterol tested, so I did.

I went to the doctor, at the end of last month but it was too late in the day to take a blood test. So I had to book my own appointment in a lab, to get it done and finally see how my health is.

I did get my blood pressure measured at my doctor, and it was normal. Nothing major to be worried about there, but I still had blood work to be done. Fast forward to the day before yesterday, where I had an appointment. A few minutes after my booked time, I was guided into a small room, with a chair. The technician asked me to sit down and get comfortable.

Usually, when you get blood drawn, the technician places a rubber band on your arm, in order to draw out the vein. Mine? Well, mine popped out without the need for the rubber band. In went the needle, and out came the blood. 5 minutes after I sat down, I was finished. I then went off to work, curious at what the test would show. Definitely high cholesterol and sugar.

The results came today, and they were surprising, to say the least.

Two of the parameters were below the norm - my vitamin D and my cholesterol.

I have severe vitamin D deficit, which makes sense, because I am not in the sun a lot. The surprising one was the cholesterol. I would have bet any money that my cholesterol was too high. Instead, it's too low, but only by a tiny margin.

Am I healthy? I don't know. I will phone my doctor tomorrow to ask her what she thinks of the results. I can, however, see that I am a lot healthier than the last time I took this kind of test, so that's a plus

Auntie D and Al

You may be casually acquainted with, or have an intimate relationship with 1 or both.

They seem at first to be nice and help you through your day in handling stress etc.

A casual visitor alone or often together.

But soon you become more dependent and start to not only want them ,but I'm fact need them.

I'm talking about antidepressants and alcohol

rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing

I piss clean but how many here can admit they can sigh

Interesting to know how many here are "clean"

ULTRA PROCESSED FOODS

According to recent research, UPF products are responsible for 32 harmful effects to health.
Cancer, heart disease, adverse mental health, early death.
Examples of these foods are, sugary cereals, protein bars, fizzy drinks, ready meals, fast food, packaged baked goods.
UPF products tend to contain, colours, emulsifiers, flavours, high amounts of sugar, saturated fats, salt and preservatives.
Some of us, no doubt, already realise this and try to avoid such products, but many people never look at ingredients and just stick their purchases in a shopping trolley.
Perhaps governments should get involved and issue guidelines to food manufacturers to improve the quality of their products, particularly when young children are exposed to poor quality food content.
Parents have a responsibility for the health of their kids.

Big-time insurance fraud...

The stories I've read about people committing insurance fraud is amazing. After COVID hit, the government was offering salary compensation for businesses. A guy in Miami bought some expensive sports cars with the money he claimed through his fake business. Lots of people were doing that, some got away with the scam and some didn't.

I watched a video where insurance companies send out investigators for people who are collecting large sums of money in personal injury claims. One guy was getting compensation for a back injury claiming he was unable to work, when they video taped him doing electrical work changing ceiling fixtures while standing on a 5 gallon paint bucket. He shimmied his weight to 'walk' the bucket along the floor from light to light. He lost his benefits.

A viral news story came up this week where a 36 year old woman in Ireland claimed her car crash in 2017 was so severe, she was unable to work for 5 years, carry her children, finish basic chores or lift a heavy bag. Claimed that, at times, she needed her medication to be brought to her in bed due to the pain. She had sued the insurance company and had an $823,000 injury claim pending.

What do you do with your Christmas tree after the holiday? You toss it... literally.

In January 2018, she entered a Christmas tree chucking contest... and won!
Her photo of the winning event made it to a national newspaper. The Judge having seen the photo threw out the case and remarked that the “very graphic picture” of her tossing the tree had helped her make the decision.

thumbs up

Is Niacin a double-edged sword...

30 years ago, I had high cholesterol levels and told by my family doctor to take niacin supplements that will elevate my metabolism and help reduce cholesterol naturally. I did and soon after started feeling joint pain, so I stopped taking supplements and the pains went away.

4 years ago, I started up with a cardiologist and she said my cholesterol was 'in range' but a little high, so I started taking 500mg of niacin daily and noticed joint pain again.

Researching the research always finds difference in how much niacin (aka vitamin B3) is necessary. Since many foods are rich in niacin and it's added to cereals and flour, the need for supplements may not be necessary. I found one statement from the Mayo Clinic, 16mg is the recommended daily amount. (so why does it come in 500mg strength?)

I'm finding a contradiction as some sites claim niacin reduces inflammation, yet another site claims 'in a new report' it may raise the risk of heart disease by triggering inflammation and damaging blood vessels. However, according to one story:

The researchers currently don’t know where to draw the line between healthy and unhealthy amounts of niacin, although that may be determined with future research.

"The average person should avoid niacin supplements now that we have reason to believe that taking too much niacin can potentially lead to an increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease”

I read that niacin taken to reduce heart disease has been found to cause it.
