Designated Survivor (Pilot Episode) - a review!

A few years ago, I heard about a new Kiefer Sutherland show called Designated Survivor, but what IS a Designated Survivor?

"In the United States, a designated survivor (or designated successor) is an individual in the presidential line of succession, usually a member of the United States Cabinet, who is arranged to be at a physically distant, secure, and undisclosed location when the President, the Vice President, and the other officials in the line of succession are gathered at a single location, such as during State of the Union addresses and presidential inaugurations."

An interesting thing, which makes for good tv! The lead actor is Kiefer Sutherland, who has a history of doing political action series, because he was of course Jack Bauer! The all-American badass!

Anyway, back to the series!

I finally got to see the very first episode, and the story is pretty straight forward: After a devastating attack on the US Capitol, that kills the President and every other members of Congress, low-level Secretary of Urban Housing and Development, Thomas Kirkman suddenly becomes the President of The United States of America. It is now up to him, so lead the country and to calm the public, and also to find out who is behind the attack.

I really enjoyed the pilot, and it's easily a binge-worthy series. Kiefer Sutherland is, naturally, great. His wife Alex, played by Natascha McElhone, is growing on me, even though it's the first episode.

Kal Penn is Seth Wright, a speechwriter, who is sceptical of Thomas' ability to lead the country.

This has very strong 24 vibes to it, and I absolutely love it, since 24 is my all time favourite tv series.

I am excited to see how this season pans out. There are 21 episodes, so plenty of time to get rocked, rolled, thrilled and awed!

The pilot episode gets an 8/10 from me!

Just listening to Public Radio...

...while channel surfing, with my new Shenzehn short wave radio. This program was on creepy, sniffy Uncle Joe Biden's choices for running mate, and his pandering, sexist claim to pick a woman. Of course, the one hour piece focused almost entirely on Black women. Sort of like almost any story on Public Radio dealing with couples, excludes heterosexuals. Or when discussing so called "Dreamers", foreign born youth, enjoying/usurping the many benefits of real US citizens, and still of questionable legality. In these cases, almost every kid interviewed is at Harvard Med School, on an affirmative action free ride. I note the far greater number of violent gang MS-13 members, who are never heard from. Many are dreamers as well. Easy to interview in prisons. Do we digress?
So I recall one of many witch hunts on President Trump, literally dozens, all failed, after constant initial media coverage. Any one heard of Stormy Daniels ever again? Russian collusion? Etc.?
Or ruses by clinician shrinks, who should know better, but were suffering from TD-HD Syndromes. So without seeing clinical records, or using laboratory info, or a diagnostic interview, much less other testing, began tossing diagnoses about, all meant to claim he is incompetent to serve in his role. Boards of Medicine reminding them of ethics in practice?
Now, the alleged issue with Trump was Narcissistic personality traits, which are common in most pols. And in Meself. And the possibility of incompetence based on cognition. During serial medical exams, standardized testing for this was done. By qualified Physicians. He scored high normal on all.
Now, Syndromic alt lefties here will never agree, but most fair folks have seen the daily gaffs, verbal and behavioral, indicating poor judgment/memory/etc. by this the former VP. Many long montages exist displaying these. Belly ticklers all.
Yet nowhere on the biased media do we see any discussion of VP Biden's clear challenges in these vital regards. Many of us are aware of this "oversight", but it's really striking. Along with sequestering him a good deal, as damage control. Can't make any of this up.

General Commander - a review!

Steven Seagal movies are always hit and miss. Some, like Under Siege and Exit Wounds, are fantastic, and others, well not so much. I remember watching Shadow Man, where he downed a helicopter by shooting it with a pistol. It's ridiculous, silly and just so out there, that you just can't help but love it. This time, the mighty Seagal is a GRS operative named Jake Alexander. Him and his team of young recruits go after the most dangerous and notorious criminals with the help of a Hong Kong billionaire. That's the premise, now is it any good?

Well, in short terms: No. It is bad. Like, shockingly bad! I REALLY need to look up the movie on IMDb, before buying it.

Apart from Seagal, Sonia Couling, Byron Gibson, Soraya Torrens, Megan Brown, Jai Day and Edoardo Costa fill out the rest of the main cast,

Edoardo plays Orsini, the crime boss and the main villain in this film. He's actually pretty good in this one. He's a CLASSIC Italian mafia guy: Luxury pads on Malta, wine and pasta. Did I say classic? I meant stereotypical. He's into artwork as well. It just doesn't get more cliché than that!

The thing that the movie DOES get plus points on, is the locations where they film. Hong Kong, Valetta and Manila. Exotic locations, that are extremely good looking on film!

The score of this "masterpiece" is 3-5 out of 10 on IMDb, and I feel like it's too generous. I have seen worse films than this one, but still, General Commander ranks VERY much at the bottom of the barrel.

1.5 out of 10. I never want to see this abomination again, for as long as I live. Even the explosions and the gunfights are lackluster.

Vikings

This song makes me think of Ivar The Boneless. Dunno why. I don't care for that character at all.

I dig this song though:

The Loudest Voice Episode 1 + 2 - a review!

The new tv show from Showtime about Roger Ailes, the Chairman and CEO of Fox News and Fox Television Studios is on HBO Nordic, so I decided to give it a view. The show stars Russell Crowe as Roger Ailes, and it depicts his entire history of Fox News. From the humble beginnings to the 9/11 attacks and all the way up to his death.

Keeping bias out of this review, I enjoyed watching the story unfold. I love Russell's portrayal of Roger, and I find it interesting to see, how Fox grew from a, let's be honest, amateur studio to the giant powerhouse we see today.

Nothing is left out. Every scandal. Every mistake. Every low and every high are in the show. Episode 1 starts in 1995, and it depicts several key points in Fox News, among those how Hannity was hired. The drama slowly unfolds, and it also shows how much of a mess Fox was in the beginning.

Episode 2 starts out on the morning of 9/11, where we see a fast-thinking Roger, doing what he did best - break the news to the people. The episode also showed the negative effect of that. Breaking the wrong, and often unsubstantiated news, like the time when we were told that Saddam Hussein had WMD's, and then Geraldo Rivera openly lied about him being in Tora Bora.

I look forward to the next episode, on the 14th of july.

So far, I give this series a 7/10. Room for improvement, but it doesn't need much to be a great show!

Hunter Killer - a review!

What do you get when you take Gerard Butler, Michael Nyqvist, Gary Oldman and Common and put them in a spy thriller?

The answer is a movie, that has a great premise, but somewhat lacks a bit of a punch, to make it into a home run, and it comes across as a bit boring. The story is relatively straight forward: An untested submarine captain named Joe Glass, played by Gerard Butler, assumes command of the USS Arkansas, and he is told that the USS Tampa Bay has been lost in the Arctic. At the same time, a Russian general stages a coup against the Russian President, so now it is up to Glass to stage a rescue operation with some badass Navy Seals, in order to free the President, and fix everything.

I hadn't seen ANY marketing for this movie, only the posters, hanging in my local cinema, so I had my assumptions. If a movie doesn't have any marketing, then it's probably a bit terrible. But I am a big fan of Gerard Butler, and I love submarine thrillers, so I had to see it. I was excited, because Gerard Butler in an action film guarantees a good time.. Just not this time around.

It doesn't spare anything regarding the action. There are shootouts, explosions and exciting bits, but that's about it, really. There is also a TON of CGI work, and you'd think that we in 2018 can make decent submarine CGI, and that you could make explosions look amazing in CGI, but no! The special effect- and visual effect team really dropped the ball on this one, particularly towards the end.

Acting wise, well it has its moments. Gary Oldman is great as the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Charles Donnegan, and Gerard Butler is great as Joe Glass. Other actors worth mentioning is Toby Stephens as Bill Beaman, the leader of the Navy Seals. He is a no nonsense, hardcore soldier, who enjoys going into battle and killing. The reason why I think he is worthy of a mention, is that he is SUPPOSED to be a hardcore badass, but he just ends up being a parody of every war-hungry team leader.

Common is also doing a decent job as RADM John Fisk, but it is clear, that he isn't suitable for military parts. He is more suited for secondary parts or even third degree parts.

All-in-all, it's a sub-par film, that is forgotten very quickly. The only stand out thing about this movie is Michael Nyqvist, Gary Oldman and Gerard Butler. If you are thinking about seeing it, wait until it is out on dvd.

Rating: 3/10

One of the greatest movies ever made.

I just got done watching it on TV AGAIN, while I was working on cropping photos from today.

Terrific actors, wonderful story with many intense captivating scenes, plot twists, and good music with a fabulous finish.
I give it 5 stars out of 5. thumbs up thumbs up

If somehow you still have never seen it, make sure you do.
If you haven't seen it in a long time, do yourself a favor and re-visit it.

The movie I am referring to was released 77 years ago
and yet the story is timeless and will endure the ages.

Thankfully, "We'll always have.......

Casablanca"

In my opinion Bogart's best. However, Key Largo and The African Queen, were also excellent.
