It - A review!

I mentioned in a previous blog, that I had seen the movie It, but I never wrote a review of it. So I thought that I would do just that.

The story is extremely straight forward: In the summer of 1989, a group of bullied kids band together to destroy a shape-shifting monster, which disguises itself as a clown and preys on the children of Derry, their small Maine town.

I am not usually into horror films, but It has captured what a good horror film is: Exciting, creepy and full of great performances.

The runtime for this movie is a genre-breaking 2 hours and 15 minutes. Usually, horror films has a strict 90 minute runtime. Think about it: Every horror movie you have seen lasts 90 minutes. It's like there were some committee going "Right, we need a standard runtime on our horror movies. Waddaya got?"

Anyway, sidetrack! Let's get back to the review!

Bill Skarsgård stars as Pennywise the Dancing Clown. He gives an awesome performance, and he is sufficiently creepy enough to pull off what will undoubtedly be hailed a legendary performance!

The kids are being played by Jeremy Ray Taylor, Sophia Lillis, Finn Wolfhard, Chosen Jacobs, Jack Dylan Grazer and Wyatt Oleff, and they are each doing a wonderful job. There is also a particularly nasty bully called Henry Bowers, who is played by Nicholas Hamilton. Being the victim of bullying myself, I can confirm that this Henry Bowers is THE single worst person I have ever seen in a movie. He is a vicious, nasty piece of human garbage, but all bullies have a weakness - in Henry's case, it's his cop father.

The six kids, lovingly named The Losers Club, Henry Bowers and the entity known as Pennywise form a fantastic horror movie, that I really, really enjoyed. For the first time ever, I am looking forward to a horror sequel!

10/10, hands down!

Exploring foreign films on Netflix (plus one Hollywood film)

Yesterday, I was bored, so I watched three films back to back. Mosul, A Man Apart and The Last Runway. Let's begin with Mosul!

What is it about? It's set in the Iraqi city of Mosul, at the height of the ISIS regime, and we follow a small Iraqi swat team, in their efforts to fight back against the terrorist movement. All the actors are Iraqi or Arabic, meaning that this film is in Arabic, with very few English phrases. The movie is filled with fantastic moments, and it also has a fair amount of blood and gore. If you like foreign films, give this a watch. Just do me a favor: Watch it in the original language with subtitles for the best experience.

Next up is A Man Apart, starring Vin Diesel as Sean, an ex-gang banger turned DEA special agent, who busts a drug lord on Mexican soil. However, retaliation is swift, and after a tragic event, Sean digs deep into his past and unleashes justice his own way. This is an old fashioned revenge action flick, with decent performances by Diesel and his co-stars, and it's worth a watch on a Sunday morning, when you don't have anything else to do. It's not bad, but it's not good either. It's a middle of the road typical American revenge flick, with some explosions and shootouts, and a plot that is pretty solid.

So that leads me to the last film on today's blog: The Last Runway (or Leal, solo hay una forma de vivir), if we have to get specific. After a series of embarrassing attempts at busting a drug lord, a former Colonel, Fernandez, is appointed Minister of the National Anti-Drug Agency (SENAD). He purges the special forces, and starts from scratch to fight the first of many battles against the drug trafficking on the border of Paraguay and Argentina. As with Mosul, this film is in a different language than English. It is Spanish this time, which makes the movie super fun to watch. It has everything: Action, comedy and a fair bit of good music as well. The main villain is.. Not very threatening, however his brother is. He comes across as someone with a VERY short fuse, not something you want while running a drug smuggling ring. But the movie DOES get credit for being very inventive with the camera angles.

Grade time! Mosul gets a 9/10. Great film, highly recommended! A Man Apart gets a 6/10. Nothing special, but just a middle of the road grade. The Last Runway gets an 8/10. Fun and extremely creative!

Top Gear Danmark - a review!

Today, the BBC show Top Gear premiered their very first Danish episode. The format is the same as the British one: Three guys, cool cars, The Stig, challenges, a Star in a Small car and a test track! It's a formula that works, so why change it?

The first episode saw the three hosts, TV presenter Felix Schmidt, actor Dar Salim and ex pro racecar driver Jesper Carlsen, go to the top of Denmark, to test three SUVs: A Mercedes-Benz G Wagon, a Lamborghini Urus and a Bentley Bentayga.

The tests and challenges were classic Top Gear: Banter between the hosts, trash-talking between the hosts and just good old fashioned fun, in three big cars.

The Star in a Small car was the ex boxer Mikkel Kessler. He set a time on a race track, just like in the original show.

Overall, the first episode was great. There are some kinks, but it's the first episode. It takes time to smooth it out, and to really settle into the role as Top Gear hosts. Episode two premiers in a week from now, and I will definitely watch it!

For this very first episode, I will absolutely give it a score of 7 out of 10. The later episodes will probably be rated higher, but we'll have to see how it goes. For now, it's a VERY promising start.

Next review will be of a film I bought today, starring Steven Seagal.

Oh boy.. uncertain

The Quake - a review!

I mentioned in my previous blog, that I would see if I could find this movie, and watch it. Well, find it I did, and let me tell you - I did watch that. And I loved it!

In 1904 an earthquake of magnitude 5.4 on the Richter scale shook Oslo, with an epicenter in the "Oslo Graben" which runs under the Norwegian capital. There are now signs that indicate that we can expect a major future earthquake in Oslo.

The main cast is the same from the first movie, although this time, the family is torn, due to Kristians wife divorcing him. Kristian lives in the now rebuilt Geiranger. He gets word that a friend of his was killed in an accident in an Oslo tunnel, so Kristian sets off to Oslo, to search for answers.

This movie is exciting, to say the least! Yet again, the VFX is stellar, and it's always impressive seeing a massive 35 story building fall down! They up the terror and the gore in this one, which is a welcome sight. A little blood didn't hurt anyone!

The Quake is better than The Wave, and my rating this time goes to - wait for it - 10 out of 10! (I think that's my first 10/10 this year)

This movie has it all: Thrills, destruction and top notch effects! Highly recommended if you want to watch some thrilling destruction!

Stranger Things: Season 1 - a review!

I never really got the hype about Stranger Things, so I decided not to take part in viewing the show.

Now, however, I have decided to give it a chance, to see what everyone is raving on about. So, was it worth it?

The first season is about a young boy, who disappears. It's then up to his mother, a police chief, and his friends to confront terrifying forces in order to get him back.

Season 1 has a number of different subplots, that all merge at the end, and it's a pretty well-crafted series. It's VERY slow, but the first season is all about character building. The season has it all: Horror, suspense, action, humor and emotion. It's an extremely impressive first season, so I will definitely begin season 2 right away.

Let's hope this is more fast-paced, because if I have to see ONE more interrogation, so help me... That is the only reason why this first season gets an 8/10. Not bad but not perfect!

Prisoner Cell Block H

I remember as a kid, around 12-13 years old, me and my sister would be watching this show in her bedroom every night that was made in England back in the late 70's going into 1980. Prisoner Cell Block H was like a soap about a women's prison with all these interesting characters on the show that were of course, prisoners.

I'm sure some on here, especially over in Europe around my age, or a little older may remember this show.

Zack Snyder's Justice League! Yes, please!

A few years back, in 2017 to be exact, Justice League was released in cinemas, out to deliver some justice for DC fans. See what I did there? Anyway.. The movie was awful, because two different directors worked on it. First, Zack Snyder was picked to direct the big blockbuster film, but he had to step aside during the post production, to deal with his daughter's death. Joss Whedon took over, and embarked on a 25 million dollar re-shoot rampage, where he pretty much changed the tone of the film. It's a complicated mess that will take forever to explain. I will therefore move on to The Snyder Cut, which fans wanted ever since the release of the 2017 movie. Talks about the Snyder cut was all over the internet, but it was said, that it would never ever happen. Fast forward three years, to February 2020, where Zack Snyder confirmed, that there would be a version of the film, known as Zack Snyder's Justice League - or The Snyder Cut. Fans were ecstatic, of course. They would finally get a version of the film, that shows how Zack Snyder wanted the movie to be. They also confirmed the run time: 240 minutes, or 4 hours. At first it was reported, that the movie would be split into 4 parts, but it was later revealed, that it would be one long film.

The trailer for the movie dropped today, and it just looks epic! Much better than the 2017 version. This one is rated R, for violence and some language. There is one sequence in the trailer, that shows bloodshed, so hopefully there will be some more bloodshed. After all, this is a superhero film with a lot of swords, guns and fighting.

The Snyder Cut will go to HBO Max and HBO Nordic in selected European territories, on the 18th of March

1408.......Number13....

Investigator & a paranormal writer who visits local so-called ghost spottings, stays there, and then writes about them in his books to prove that spooky places and ghosts do not exist. One day someone sends him a postcard from the Dolphin Hotel located within the city. On the postcard it reads "Don't stay in 1408" and of course now Mike wants to find out why no one should stay in 1408. Seeing a chance to prove another haunt false, he decides to go to the Dolphin Motel and stay in 1408...

The film follows Mike Enslin, an author who investigates allegedly haunted houses and rents the titular room 1408 at a New York City hotel. Although skeptical of the paranormal, he is soon trapped in the room where he experiences bizarre events.

The room is numbered "1408". Add each number together, and it equals 13 (1+4+0+8=13). The room is on the 14th floor, and the hotel skips the 13th floor, so the room is technically on the 13th floor.

An anonymous postcard to not stay in room 1408.

Dolphin Hotel)
Excellent story that will keep you watching as it bends not only John Cusack's mind but the viewers...

1408 is surprisingly interesting and lives
up to everything a
horror fan is looking for...

Absolutely worth a look.

Another Calvary on the horizon...

Taxpayer confiscatory funding of ueber alt left biased "public" broadcast media. NPR (National Proletarian Broadcasting), PBS, the Beeb, Deutsche Welle, Radio Oz, others. Certainly here, the initial thought was to provide balance to commercial on- air outlets. Bilateral political support for the idea, half a century ago.. But liberal morphing of the academy, with grads filling staff positions, well, oh my astute fellow bozos on the bus, just look at it now. Any fair minded person with eyes and ears will notice by just watching a bit. So, just take in the hate speech toward ANYTHING said/done by our Brilliant Dazzling President Trump. Or right wing pols. Never a hardball Q. ever tossed at our last affirmative action, never held a non government job, POTUS. But don't merely believe what you hear and see. Check out the lockstep rabid Dem party line support for these sources of leftie propaganda. Same with RFE and VOA. And, as with juniorversity faculty, and print MS media, almost 90% of staffers, editors, vote Democrat. Sure, the right has it's outlets, but all are commercial, supported by adverts. Which, just BTW, weren't supposed to be funders of these ether based media---again, just have a look see and hear at the ubiquitous support by the BIG EVIL corporations. Was a time, when this funding was restricted to a few second mention of of the name of a CORPORATE, very corporate, payer. But just watch the obscene advers these days, even in the face of the routinne on-air commercially oriented BEGATHONS. "all three CD's of the BG's for a "contribution" of $200. Call now, volunteers are standing by." Pathetic, hypocritical, but oh, so very Alinsky. But take heart, loves of unbiased pubic broadcasting. There's a dust storm of horse cavalry over the next (2020) hill. As if he hasn't accomplished enough already, as campaign promissed, there are rumblings of a fix to these air-wave travesties. Already, with Republican and taxpayer group efforts, the taxpayer funding has successfully been cut back by some 60+%. Lots of plans in the Trump hopper. Cutting back ALL such dollars. And a start up of fully taxpayer funded MORE BALANCED Radio/TV ALTERNATIVES, at least for the few decades the leftie propagandists got away with it, and much more. To paraphrase the I Ching---in T'ai, we see the little gone, and the great come. Great indeed, are the things in T'ai. (Hexagram for the first month.)
