Impromptu movie night yesterday!

I was scrolling through Amazon Prime yesterday, as you do. The movie Bloodshot caught my eye, and I thought "Hang on, isn't that the one with Vin Diesel? I have always wanted to see that".. So I did. I quite liked it. Action packed, full of pretty spectacular stunts but the CGI wasn't really the best. Most noticeable was when Vin was having a superheroesque brawl with one of the villains. Very enjoyable two hours. Once that was over, a quick break with some food, and then I jumped straight to Netflix, and into a suspenseful thriller, that was suuper dark. Night Hunter, was the name of that movie. It stars Henry Cavill as a weathered detective in Canada, who is investigating a death, and gets caught up in a very dangerous case, involving a recently arrested man linked to years of female abductions and murders. Besides Cavill, Alexandra Dadario, Ben Kingsley, Stanley Tucci and Brendan Fletcher completes the main cast. Brendan Fletcher REALLY shines in this movie, which is a great watch. It's filled with great acting and a twist you never see coming. When it happened, I went "Of COURSE! How could I not have seen it?".. The final movie of the night was the 1983 CLASSIC (yes, it's a classic!) Blue Thunder. Why did I decide to watch that? Well, after the darkness that was Night Hunter, I wanted to watch something light and fun, because ending your night with a dark thriller really doesn't do anything to help you sleep. Trust me, I know!

Anyway, Blue Thunder is one of those movies where you go "Wow, it was a simpler time back then". The movie itself is hugely entertaining, full of, for the time, great action and the lead role is well played by Rob Scheider and the rest of the cast is Warren Oats, Candy Clark and Daniel Stern (yes, Marv from Home Alone). When I saw Daniel on screen, I went "Hang on, he seems familiar.. Who is he..?".. I had to go to IMDb to find out, and when I did, it was yet again one of those "Of COURSE!" moments.

I might have to watch more movies from the eighties, because they are a LOT of fun!

Shorta/Enforcement - a review!

It's rare that a Danish film is received well by everyone, particularly when it's made by two relatively unknown directors. They received some money from The Danish Film Institute, and then they got to work making an action thriller, that is fairly well put together. The story spans just over a day, and we follow two police officers, Jens and Mike, on their patrol in the wake of the violent arrest of a 19 year old man, who ends up in a coma. Once confirmation comes through that the young man has died, the two cops are trapped in the ghetto, where the deceased was from, with tensions mounting towards them. It's now up to them to find a way out, before they are killed.

Alongside them is Amos, a boy they arrested for throwing an item at their squad car. He helps them navigate the maze of buildings, until they reach safety.

One of the cops, Mike, is extremely racist, which can be tough to watch, while Jens is much more respectful towards everyone. Mike uses derogatory terms towards everybody, and I would imagine that the actor playing the racist cop, had to ask if the other actors were okay with being called extremely rude and disrespectful names. I met the actor who is playing Mike, when I was on a shoot for a crime tv show, and he's super friendly and caring towards everyone, so it was weird seeing him take on this racist of a role.

The setting of the movie is in a place called Svalegården, which is based on a real life ghetto about 15 minutes driving from where I live. It was weird seeing that on screen, but the setting really helped making Shorta a thrilling and exciting watch. Shorta, by the way, is Arabic for cop, and the original title for the movie was "panser", which means armor in Danish. It's also the Danish slang word for cop. So this is very much a cop based film, with certain elements mixed into the story. Racism, police brutality and violence, to name a few.

The cast in the film is Jesper Lohmann as Mike, Simon Sears as Jens and Tarek Zayat as Amos. Tarek in particular is great in the film. When you think of Danish films, you might think that all we make are gloomy crime dramas, and cringe worthy comedy, which is true. This is the second time a Danish film has tried to be a serious action film, the first one being the WWII drama Flammen & Citronen.

In general, Shorta was an enjoyable two hours of content.

8/10

S T A R G A T E

It's great when YouTube plays full length movies... for free.
Usually, they are online for a limited basis then the status requires login, subscription, and a fee.
Be sure you have ad-block on your browser as I'm told every few minutes the movie is interrupted to play a commercial.

I'm watching STARGATE (again) tonight. I love the music score.

Exploring foreign films on Netflix (plus one Hollywood film)

Yesterday, I was bored, so I watched three films back to back. Mosul, A Man Apart and The Last Runway. Let's begin with Mosul!

What is it about? It's set in the Iraqi city of Mosul, at the height of the ISIS regime, and we follow a small Iraqi swat team, in their efforts to fight back against the terrorist movement. All the actors are Iraqi or Arabic, meaning that this film is in Arabic, with very few English phrases. The movie is filled with fantastic moments, and it also has a fair amount of blood and gore. If you like foreign films, give this a watch. Just do me a favor: Watch it in the original language with subtitles for the best experience.

Next up is A Man Apart, starring Vin Diesel as Sean, an ex-gang banger turned DEA special agent, who busts a drug lord on Mexican soil. However, retaliation is swift, and after a tragic event, Sean digs deep into his past and unleashes justice his own way. This is an old fashioned revenge action flick, with decent performances by Diesel and his co-stars, and it's worth a watch on a Sunday morning, when you don't have anything else to do. It's not bad, but it's not good either. It's a middle of the road typical American revenge flick, with some explosions and shootouts, and a plot that is pretty solid.

So that leads me to the last film on today's blog: The Last Runway (or Leal, solo hay una forma de vivir), if we have to get specific. After a series of embarrassing attempts at busting a drug lord, a former Colonel, Fernandez, is appointed Minister of the National Anti-Drug Agency (SENAD). He purges the special forces, and starts from scratch to fight the first of many battles against the drug trafficking on the border of Paraguay and Argentina. As with Mosul, this film is in a different language than English. It is Spanish this time, which makes the movie super fun to watch. It has everything: Action, comedy and a fair bit of good music as well. The main villain is.. Not very threatening, however his brother is. He comes across as someone with a VERY short fuse, not something you want while running a drug smuggling ring. But the movie DOES get credit for being very inventive with the camera angles.

Grade time! Mosul gets a 9/10. Great film, highly recommended! A Man Apart gets a 6/10. Nothing special, but just a middle of the road grade. The Last Runway gets an 8/10. Fun and extremely creative!

FROM INDIA WITH LOVE part 3

It was a cold overcast day in central London when Crown left his apartment and drove his AC Cobra to the secret service building and parked it in his usual spot. Instead of using the lift he climbed the stairs to the third floor and entered his office where his secretary Lois Proudfoot immediately looked relieved to see him The chief of staff wants you. He's with Mr Noon now so can you go to see him now. Crown didn't stop to question her but went straight to Noon's office. Noon was the head of the secret service and had Crown's great respect.
Noon's secretary told him to go straight in. The chief of staff was on his way out and greeted Crown. See you for lunch hopefully he said and made way for Crown.
Come in Crown and sit down. Noon was looking through the office window and slowly swivelled round in his red leather chair. He had a folder in his hands and handed it to Crown. That's for you to study after this meeting. Something's come up, and I need you to take charge of the matter. We have a double agent working in the Russian embassy in Mumbai. She is really one of ours and we have been feeding her information of sufficient quality to make her appear to be effective in working for the Russian service. The FSB. She has been accepted by them and she has access to something of great value, which she says she could obtain. But that would be the end of her operation there and she would need to leave the place pretty quickly for fear of retribution.
This is where you come in Crown. I want you to help her carry out the procurement of the vital machinery and get her and yourself out of the country.
You will find travel tickets in that folder. You will leave for India tomorrow morning
Are you happy to do this operation BLUE9?
Noon sometimes called Crown by his code number and usually when there was a job to be done.
Yes sir. Of course.

Part 4 next and the excitement builds. Crown meets double agent.

FROM INDIA WITH LOVE part 4

After the meeting with Noon, Crown returned to his office in a buoyant mood. He looked at his secretary who was wearing a pink and white shirt and light grey skirt, and said you look beautiful today Lois.
She laughed and replied, Don't I always? You look happy with yourself.
Of course Lois you always look great. Yes, at last I have something special on. I'm off tomorrow to India.
You lucky thing. Escaping this weather. I hope you bring me something nice back.
The chief of staff entered the room. Everything go ok with Noon, Crown?
Yes I'm off tomorrow.
I need to tell you a few things before you leave the office. When you arrive in Mumbai, you will be met by our man there called Tarak. He is totally reliable and knows the place like the back of his hand. He'll sort your accommodation and eventually arrange a meeting with this agent Teen. At some point you will be approached by a man from the CIA. The Americans are very interested in this cypher machine and will be happy to support you, if you need help.
That's good. Said Crown. Nice to know there's back up if I need it.
Ok then Crown I'll leave you to it, and keep in touch. I'll do all I can to help at this end.
Now what about lunch? You can read that file after.
Let's go then, replied Crown.
See you later Lois.

Crown returned to his office later in the day and studied the details in the dossier marked Top Secret.
His eyes were draw to the picture of Lana, who appeared very glamorous. Long dark hair. Shapely figure. Wearing a turquoise dress and stiletto healed shoes. He read the information regarding the cypher machine, which apparently was Russia's most valuable piece of coding apparatus, and realised the value if it could be captured. After a period of intense reading he closed. the folder and looked at his watch. It was 6pm. Lois had left the office earlier and wished him good luck. Crown picked up the document and on his way out, deposited it with Noon's secretary. Said goodbye and left the building for home.

Don't miss part 5 of this adventure. Arriving soon and on location in Mumbai. Meeting with characters.

FROM INDIA WITH LOVE part 2

Crown woke at the sound of the motor bike. He rushed to the window and saw the back of the rider disappear into the distance. He saw the pile of clothes near the bed. Stupid b*tch he thought. She was so intelligent but forgot to get dressed. He picked up the discarded items and put them on the bed. He lay down again and with his head on the pillow began to reflect on the few days that had elapsed and how he had ended up in Mumbai and encountered the beautiful agent with the code name Lana.
Part 3 coming soon
