Resident experts...

I have to remind myself that CS has a double handful of resident experts, versed on all subjects regardless of their careers and education. It doesn't matter whether they are retired shoe salesmen, goat herders, philanthropists, or computer gurus. They always have the reasons why something (usually political) doesn't work, but rarely, I mean rarely have the solution to the subject(s) they speak about.

Word block...

Most sites I've posted to have some type of filtering. Different names for the same thing, it could be called word filtering, censorship, word block, and sometimes it's called annoying!

Profanity blocking tops the list, but all websites are not equal. We can say WTF on CS but a musician site I'm a member of doesn't allow that. You type WTF and your post will read: Oh my goodness.

Are you serious... they inserted Oh my goodness in place of WTF.

The military coined SNAFU and it's often used in TV news, newspapers and online news. Explain to your 10 year old what SNAFU means.

Lots of words get blocked here. The other word for rooster that begins with 'C' gets blocked by the filter. There's a famous British singer Joe who's family name gets blocked simply because it contains part of the blocked word. Depending on the website, that city in Thailand also gets blocked. You know, Bang....

If your name is Richard, don't expect your nickname (starting with the letter D) to pass the filter.

Buttocks... only the British version 'arse' gets through, the 3 letter word used in America is blocked. But you can say shit.

Oh, you graduated with honors? don't expect to be able to use the Latin word that goes with 'laude'

The 'C' word that describes some women won't make it through, nor will some body parts.

Consistently inconstant, but you've just got to work with it!

Creating a blog to calm the political storm...

It's been a week since the Moderator swept through and deleted a shitload bunch of political, virus, religious blogs in an attempt to steer blogs (and forums) back to their intended direction... dating.

I see a few disguised as something else have slipped through and that's to be expected. What I didn't expect was the original post by the Moderator having taken on a life of it's own with a high-level of bickering... it bears the very same tone of blogs that were deleted.

At some point I'd wager at least one of the following: The blog to be locked, some comments to be deleted, an additional revision or entry from the Moderator.

Years ago, Yahoo allowed for comments to their articles/stories and sometime last year, that was discontinued as opinions went beyond opinion with name calling and comment abuse taking the focus far away from what Yahoo intended.

I think this first round was a polite warning...

Loneliness

Have been out of a long relationship for almost 3 months and things seem strange sometimes. In general, I deal well with loneliness, but sometimes is not easy. Just wondering how everyone is dealing with loneliness, please feel free to share your thoughts if you like cheers

Flux...

I was doing some model aircraft maintenance this weekend, specifically changing the battery connectors. A fully charged battery passes 5 amps to the motor in 5 minutes. it's enough current to make the entire system hot. The motor gets burning hot and the wires in the system get really warm. If there is corrosion on the battery connector, the chance of it failing are great. Keeping that in mind, I changed out the connectors for a model I haven't flown in a few months.
Normally, I pay a friend to 'wrench' on my helicopters. He's got 20 years experience with helicopters and drones, doing repairs for the other pilots. This time, I decided to do the work myself.
The tools I had in my Miami house were all boxed when I sold the place and are now stored on the back patio of my condo. I had to dig around to find the soldering iron, solder and flux.

I purchased a bag of connectors from a friend who changed systems and no longer needs that style. Before starting, I watched 2 YouTube videos about wiring up this style connector and both videos had the same sequence. I did a test with some of the same thickness wire to see if I remembered how to solder. It's been a few years... I should remember this, right?

The first test failed because the heat from the soldering pencil was marginal and I had to hold it to the connector for a long time to get the solder to melt. I had it in a clip like the video, but the metal clip acts like a heat sink pulling the heat away from the connector.
I decided to take a piece of wood and drill a small hole in it the size of the connector.
Pressing the connector into the hole was perfect as the solder was now melting when it didn't before.

Electrical solder is extruded mix of tin and lead with the center core having rosin to help it stick to the the metal you are joining. It difficult cases, there is a chemical flux paste that improves the flow of the solder. I used a small amount of flux when adding solder to the wire (tinning) and some in the depression of the connector.

Making several tries, I got the 3rd set to my liking and snapped the connectors to the cap.
I owe the success of this product to the flux. Yeah, I know when foreigners say another word quickly it sounds like flux.

The only down-side to the project is /are fumes from the solder & flux being toxic.
I had a fan blowing the smoke away but the next morning I got up with a bad case of asthma.

Bamboo

Have you ever built anything with Bamboo? I've made a shelf unit with it using long 1/4" threaded rod and 8 to 12 inch long Bamboo tubes as separators between the shelves. It looks great. The shelves are 1X4 foot pieces I bought at Home Despot. All you need is a hand drill and a 1/4" drill bit to drill the boards for the threaded rod to go through. some nuts and flat washers and you're ready to assemble the shelf. My son and his GF Shannon outdid me when they made a 10 foot long shelf unit using actual pre made shelf boards.
I've got a ton of Bamboo growing behind my house so that part of it at least, is free.

Mice and salt

No one likes to hear the telltale scuttle of mice behind walls. They may be small and harmless-looking, but they bring a lot of problems with them. First and foremost, mice can carry disease and parasites into the house, and you don't need to be bit by one to be affected. Instead, according to Healthline, viruses and illnesses can be spread by their droppings, which will be plentiful. The risk increases if you come into contact with their droppings in a poorly ventilated area, such as a crawlspace. Not worried about illnesses? Then you should be worried about property damage. These small animals can chew through drywall and electrical wires, which can lead to something as serious as a fire. Luckily, you can banish them with the help of a pantry staple: salt.
You can use it in lieu of traps and as a natural poison, and you can use it as a way to ensure they don't die directly in your house. Whatever your need, sprinkling salt around the house will help you keep pests off your property. Here's how to do it.
How to use salt to banish mice:
Salt is poisonous to mice because it severely dehydrates them. To use salt to drive them out of your house, you can use one of several methods. The first is to sprinkle it directly on surfaces or areas where you know they are. If you have found mouse droppings in your crawlspace, under the stairs, or on shelving, sprinkle a liberal amount of salt there for them to consume. If you try this and it doesn't work, you may have to combine it with a food item that mice are naturally drawn to, such as peanut butter. Lay down a paper towel or plate, put a glob of peanut butter on it, and heavily sprinkle it with salt. That should be enough to attract them to the bait.
If you have pets at home, keep them away from the areas you leave salt traps in. Though salt won't be fatal to them, it can still be quite harmful, as consuming excess amounts can cause vomiting and diarrhea.
Why it works:
This hack works because salt severely dehydrates mice, and eating a large amount of it is toxic to them, damaging their liver and kidneys and eventually shutting their bodies down. They will instantly start looking for water to counteract the poison, which can drive them out of your house before they perish. While some people prefer to get rid of mice humanely and release them into the wild, this might not be the best idea if you have an infestation. Mice are intelligent creatures and tend to return to the place they think is "home."
Since mice need a lack of water for this trap to work, you need to be diligent about covering up any water sources before going to bed. Address any leaks, mop up any spills, close the toilet lid, and cover nearby faucets with a rag. This will ensure the salt does its job, pushing them out of your home.

11 Negative phrases

Here are 11 negative phrases to ditch if you want to think more positively and feel more confident, according to behavioral scientists, researchers and psychologists.
1. “I have to do that.”
What to say instead: “I get to do that.”
Swapping that one little word will change your attitude in a big way. It makes you look at something as an opportunity, rather than an obligation. Even if the task is unpleasant, it can teach you new lessons and open new doors.
2. “I can’t do that.”
What to say instead: “I can try to do that.”
Don’t admit defeat before you’ve begun! When you tell yourself that you can try, you’re not only giving yourself a chance to accomplish something, you’re also not setting up excessively high expectations, which makes it easier to actually succeed.
3. “I should do that.”
What to say instead: “I will do that.” (Or “won’t do,” depending on your mindset).
“Should” is a controlling word, and it puts pressure on us. So put yourself back in charge. Drop the “should” and make yourself the decision-maker by choosing whether or not do something on your own terms.
4. “Why is this happening to me?”
What to say instead: “What am I learning from this?”
When you ask yourself what you’re learning, you turn something that’s bugging or upsetting you into something that can lead you to better things. You’re not complaining; you’re simply finding the good in what might be a difficult time.
5. “I never should have.”
What to say instead: “Because I did that, I now know .”
When you rephrase this thought, you begin to think about the good things that happened because you did something that you thought you shouldn’t have. Maybe you met someone you wouldn’t have met, or you discovered something wonderful about yourself.
6. “I failed.”
What to say instead: “This attempt didn’t work.”
So maybe something you tried to do didn’t turn out the way you expected. You didn’t get that new client, or you didn’t get the promotion you wanted. But if you tell yourself that you failed, end of story, you’re being unfair to yourself. Remember that there will be other opportunities.
7 . “If only I had done .”
What to say instead: Nothing!
We’ve all had our “if only” moments. “If only I had spoken up at that meeting with my idea,” or “If only I hadn’t answered that interview question that way.” But this is dead-end thinking. You’re not learning from the past, you’re just lamenting and making excuses.
8. “This is too complicated.”
What to say instead: “I don’t understand this right now.”
When you face a new challenge by immediately telling yourself that you’ll never get your mind around it,  you’re making it sound like it’s an unchangeable fact. This means you’re subtly telling yourself that you can’t change or grow, which, of course, is nonsense. We are all works in progress.
9. “It’s not fair.”
What to say instead: “I can deal with it anyway!”
Sure, life can feel unfair sometimes, but that doesn’t mean you have to keep repeating that negative mantra to yourself and feel beaten down. Face that perceived unfairness head on and look for solutions that will get you to where you want to be.
10. “It’s never going to change.”
What to say instead: “I can change the way I approach this.”
This is another case of going from passive to active. Put yourself in charge of the situation. You think it can’t change? Then change your approach to it and thoughts about it!
11. “Never” (or “always”)
What to say instead: Avoid absolutes altogether!
If you find yourself saying something like, “I’ll never get the promotion I want,” or “I always get overlooked,” take a step back to put things into context. Life isn’t black and white.
