Terrier Tales....

Dream Worlds

Evil, sharp, little teeth resembling baby alligators' grinned as the three dogs

entered their dream worlds. As they slept their eyelids twitched with the white

orbs rolling round and their padded feet waved in the air as if playing ping-

pong. These Scottish terriers hunted even in their dreams. Extinct animals

were a favourite prey as well as beasts from mythology. No wonder they

woke up their human mother with such loud grunts, growls, groans, howls

and even barks escaping their floppy lips.

Daisy Netallworth, felt like any worried mum, who hears their child in the

night, only she heard all three of her ‘boys’ and so decided to listen in and then

test if they were secretly awake by pulling faces at them. First was her cat-

face, consisting of a slow smile and half-closed eyes. Next, she pulled a frog-

face, her large eyes now goggling from side-to-side with her tongue flicking in

and out. Then came the real tester, her fox-face, this one sent them bonkers

usually, but today they still slumbered. Several attempts at twitching her nose

high, showing off her teeth and flicking back imaginary whiskers made not the

slightest difference: the three terriers were limp and heavy, dead-weights, in

fact, and with smiling expressions and closed shut eyes, they “innocently”

slept on.

‘Hey, you three!’ hissed the poor woman desperate to get to sleep but they

were in another world.

Behind their closed lids, millions of images flickered away like a silent

movie. This was no normal sleep, all three were actually at the ‘mental flicks'.

Within their memories they had stored rolls of creature pictures that they

enjoyed in the privacy of the mind's eye. This is a secret place we all have

inside us where we can retreat to, experiencing wild and wonderful things

through the power of our imagination. Hence, we humans are often puzzled

over a dog's ability to snore for a whole week; yet is it any surprise when they

are not simply lying there but are off in far away places?

Henry, top hunter, nicknamed the General, often took a dream-week in

Wales with the dragons of old. He would snack on the charred remains of their

prey similar to his mum’s barbeques. Angus (better known as Fangz) was

smaller but no less a 'butcher', and dreamt of stalking the dreaded minotaur.

This half man-half bull would be half dead once Fangz got a grip. Lastly,

Dudley, the West Highland White Terrier, fantasized the most. Yet Dudley

only ever thought of one thing -'babes'. As for hunting, it left him too untidy to

get a girl. It followed, therefore, that whatever these three dreamt about,

dreamtime was a noisy affair.

(This is an extract from a series of children's books I have written based on my terrifying terriers who got me banned from every park in London: enjoy!

The second one gives him cooked fish sometimes, and the third one ( me laugh ) have nothing to offer but spending time to rub and talk to him when I saw him as well as took some photos. Now he is familar with me and even follow me upstairs for severals times...laugh

This kitten makes my day and I am crazy clicked more than hundred pics for him so far, here are the some of them ...

Death of a best friend

It is with extreme sadness that I report the death of my cat Moe. He died somewhere between 0030 hr and 0115 hr this morning. As near as I can determine from Emily's notes Moe entered our lives in Fall 97. I was working on a mower when this white half grown kitten appeared at the garage door and demanded entry. Claimed he lived here. Since we already had two female cats Emily and I ignored the request no matter how friendly the cat seemed.

He didn't leave. Just sat there at our door and complained. Two days later during a rain storm we finally relented and let him in. One of our best decisions ever.

Moe with a little adjustment soon fit right into the house and made himself completely at home.

At one point Moe climbed to an amazing 22 pounds in weight.

He was a superb hunter. Emily's word to describe Moe being on the trail of a mouse was 'relentless.' It's true. Over the decades I have seen him drag home for my inspection mice, moles, rabbits, snakes, birds, groundhog, and once even a tiny fawn as big as he was. During his life time there were no mice, spiders, very few flies or even grasshoppers residing in my house. A few tried, but they soon met Moe.

Moe's attitude towards the other animals was grudging trust without taking any BS. Initially when we adopted our dog Sassy, Moe attacked it on sight (making poor Sassy run out of the room). However, once Moe realized Sassy was not hostile he accepted her and would share sleeping space with her. Whether she liked the idea or not. :)

Both of the female cats liked him. When we adopted Herby in 04 and Herby tested Moe's authority, Moe let him know in no uncertain terms that Moe ruled the nest. After getting stitched up and returning from the animal hospital Herby never challenged Moe again and peace reigned.

Pilot Flies Old Dog 400 Miles To Get A New Home

Ashlyn was an old dog at a shelter in North Carolina — and she really wasn’t doing well.

She’d dropped a ton of weight and she suffered from sarcomas — cancerous tumors under her skin. Yet it wasn’t too late for her to have a stroke of luck.

When people at the New England Humane Society (NEHS) discovered someone with a perfect home where Ashlyn could spend the last few weeks of her life, she just needed a way to get there. So Paul Steklenski, founder of Flying Fur Animal Rescue (FFAR), decided to fly her up in his plane.

As he flew the plane with Ashlyn in the seat beside him, Steklenski started getting emotional thinking about how this might be her last ride anywhere.

Even though he’s used to flying needy dogs to rescues so they can get the homes they deserve — he usually transports about 15 to 30 dogs per month — the senior dogs particularly pull at Steklenski’s heartstrings. “Those are the ones where you focus even more on what they’re going through,” Steklenski told The Dodo.

At the beginning of the two-hour ride, Ashlyn was a bit hesitant. “She started off a little bit distant,” Steklenski said. “Then she would kind open up a bit, and she got closer.”

The dog biscuits he fed her definitely helped her feel more comfortable. “Then she gave me one paw and then the other,” he said.

More dreadful/dreary lecturing on Epidemiology.

Welcome back, young nubile people. Just another point first on seating and attire. As to the latter, those helpful three young ladies, now sitting right in front of your professor, yes, the ones with those shiny red high heels, and who are loudly chewing/snapping their bimbo brand bubble gum, have kindly volunteered to demonstrate how to dress here, based on how they looked at the last talk. Mark well their advice, as they have already earned the highest grades of this semester. If enough of you go along, including with advice on your positioning of those lovely legs, we may rename the front row the Busy BEAVER" zone. Now then, where was I?
The name of this key public health science comes from key words in the languages of ancients, and means " On the People", ie, Epid---Demios. In this talk, we present the more technical aspects of the craft. Many of you have expressed interest in "just how do they make those often misleading "predictive" models", and is there a better way?
Of the five key measurements needed to do valid Epid, we've already mentioned populations; and ratios/proportions; and exposures/outcomes. Two others remain. The first is so called assessment of intermediate variables (confounders and effect modifiers}, and the controls, to the extents possible, of the same. And the fifth, where politics and policy enter, involves the statistical ANALysis and interpretation of results of various study designs/public health interventions.
FLASH! FLASH! Class is suspended until further notice. My ex, next door, mom of our twins, and cat afficionada extraordinaire, just called to let us know that Miss Lilly, 20 pound calico supreme, just passed away, after longstanding on and off illness.. I'll go down to support all for the loss, and to help arrange for cremation, etc.. Later...

Dog born with 6 legs beats the odds to survive

Embedded image from another site

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — A dog born with six legs is being called a "miracle" as she not only survives, but is doing well at home.

Neel Veterinary Hospital in Oklahoma City shared a photo of "Skipper" over the weekend, saying she has beaten the odds after all the medical conditions stacked up against her.

The hospital said Skipper was born with one head and chest cavity, but with two pelvic regions, two lower urinary tracts, two reproductive systems, two tails, and six legs. According to the post, published research shows that Skipper may be the first six-legged dog to be born alive.

Despite those conditions, along with signs of spina bifida, Skipper's organs "appear to be in great shape."

The post says Skipper is "very strong" and is growing appropriately.

"All of her legs move and respond to stimulus just like a normal puppy. Its possible she may need physical therapy and assistance with mobility as she gets older," the hospital wrote.

Neel provided free services for Skipper's ultrasound, and a GoFundMe has been set up to help with her other medical expenses.

The Post Office

In light of what is happening in our world today, I thought the
following might bring a smile to your face.
A letter from the Post Office... this is absolutely the best!!
We don't know who replied, but there is a beautiful soul working in the
dead letter department who understands LOVE......

Our 14-year-old dog Abbey died last month. The day after she passed
away my 4-year-old daughter Meredith was crying and talking about how
much she missed Abbey.

She asked if we could write a letter to God so that when Abbey got to
Heaven, God would recognize her.

I told her that I thought that we could, so she dictated these words:

Dear God,

Will you please take care of my dog? Abbey died yesterday and is with
you in heaven.

I miss her very much. I 'm happy that you let me have her as my dog
even though she got sick.

I hope you will play with her. She likes to swim and play with balls.

I am sending a picture of her so when you see her you will know that
she is my dog.

I really miss her.

Love, Meredith

We put the letter in an envelope with a picture of Abbey & Meredith,
addressed it to God/Heaven. We put our return address on it.
Meredith pasted several stamps on the front of the envelope because she
said it would take lots of stamps to get the letter all the way to heaven.
That afternoon she dropped it into the letter box at the post office.

A few days later, she asked if God had gotten the letter yet.

I told her that I thought He had.

Yesterday, there was a package wrapped in gold paper on our front
porch addressed, 'To Meredith' in an unfamiliar hand.

Meredith opened it.

Inside was a book by Mr. Rogers called, 'When a Pet Dies.'

Taped to the inside front cover was the letter we had written to God
in its opened envelope.

On the opposite page was the picture of Abbey & Meredith and this note:

Dear Meredith,

Abbey arrived safely in heaven. Having the picture was a big help and I

recognized her right away.

Abbey isn't sick anymore.

Her spirit is here with me just like it stays in your heart. Abbey
loved being your dog.

Since we don't need our bodies in heaven, I don't have any pockets to
keep your picture in so I'm sending it back to you in this little book for
you to keep and have something to remember Abbey by.

Thank you for the beautiful letter and thank your mother for helping you
write it and sending it to me.

What a wonderful mother you have. I picked her especially for you.

I send my blessings every day and remember that I love you very much.

By the way, I'm easy to find.

I am wherever there is love.

Love,
God
