Foxy Lady & my deer friends

I got back to New Jersey (NJ) a couple of weeks ago.
The first few days I was busy unloading the car and unpacking.
After that, there was a stormy time. We got rain and/or clouds for several days.
But, once it was sunny, or mostly sunny, I ventured out to a couple of places
for wildlife photos.

There is a place near Princeton, where there is a bald eagle nest.
And sure enough, momma eagle was in the nest when I visited.
She was arranging her livingroom, making sure all the sticks were placed just so
to prevent any little ones from falling out. I got some nice photos of her and the nest.

After I left there, I headed where there is a place, that a deer family has pretty much accepted me as part of their herd. The matriarch over time has come to realize, that I mean them no harm.
So if my presence is OK with her, the rest of the herd is OK with it too.
It allows me to take some nice close-ups of the herd members, including when there are fawns (not yet).
There's actually another herd in Princeton where another matriarch has also accepted me.
But, I saw neither hide nor tail of them the other day.

Since I've gotten back to NJ, I've actually visited with the herd I mentioned first above, twice.
They have a smaller range than the southern herd, so I can find them easier.
Both times on the way to them, I saw a female red fox. She's beautiful !
Black legs with a bright red body. But, both times she saw me , before I saw her, and when I did notice her, she was racing at top speed, away from me deeper into the woods.
This second time, however, I noticed 2 kits (baby foxes), who retreated into a ravine, as mom ran off.
So, I ventured into that area and found their den.
I got some nice shots of the 2 very cautious, but curious kits sticking their head out to see if I was still there.

I then realized what the momma fox was trying to do. She wanted me to chase her (I never would have caught her), rather than go near her kits. Very foxy lady ! Literally, smart AS a fox. thumbs up

Of Goddess's creatures, big and small....

The range of boldness and shyness in creatures is a delight to watch. Recently, while retiming the racing engine, and replacing the twin timing belts on the 180 MPH vintage VIERK two wheel machine, head under the bike, Bravo resting, watching, learning, farting nearby, this chipmunk comes sauntering by, a few inches from our heads, stops, stands up to display fearsome threats with all 4 inches of stature, does the little rodent thing with front paws scratching jowls, tilts head about a bit, and just STAYS THERE!. Mind you, when Bravo sees these little ones through the windows of the VIERK mansion, he goes bonkers, as if to want to break out for the chase. But now we are both transfixed, with the bold behavior of this tiny lady. Then, just as casually, she gets back on all fours, stretches a bit, and slowly walks away, back to one of her many entrances to those warm subterranean cabins. We both get up to go over to look, Bravo still calm as a Cuke (M), no chase mode at all in this big canine. What gives here? Neighbor's tell me that some of the ones near their castles eat sunflower seeds, right out of human hands! Wow! Nature.

Fun Fun!

I have found a website that takes your Astrological sun sign and combines it with your Chinese Zodiac sign. It's fascinating. I'm a wolf. grin

"Like their animal namesake, those born under the sign of the Wolf are passionate, determined, and never back down from a fight. Though generally mild mannered and even easy-going (when things are going their way), members of this sign are very protective of themselves and the ones they love, and will not let anyone intimidate or coerce them. They are generous, warm-hearted, and perhaps a bit stubborn. Though they hold their friends and family very dear, Wolves also have an independent nature that compels them to seek their own path in life.

Wolves simultaneously seek security and adventure - two things that don’t tend to coexist very well. That said, their determination to live their lives exactly how they desire makes having both a possibility. They simply don’t accept limitations when it comes to something they are passionate about and would rather fight than run from a challenge.

As strong as they seem, those born under this sign are easily hurt emotionally. They secretly care deeply about how others perceive them and can be sensitive to even the smallest insult. Should they have a falling out with someone, they will most likely need time alone to let the wound heal. Wolves like to believe that everyone respects them as much as they want to be respected and can’t stand to be derided or treated poorly by anyone."

Pretty accurate! Wonder what you all are....

Caught on my CCTV

I have had a few anomalies and weird things happening in my house and gardens recently.

A few were:

Huge piles of dirty laundry discovered each day.

The sink full of unwashed dishes and pans

Strange smell coming from my attic, I don’t have an attic that I know of.

Small disposable nappies all over the garden, and so much more.

Setting up a CCTV system I reviewed the footage taken the next day, the results shocked me.

The dirty laundry and dishes were put there by me! I must be sleep trashing the house.

The cats were turning on the heating, they also seemed to be running a whore house, a stream of Toms came through the window, and the females were all dressed in hotpants and boob tubes.

The Chicken was acting as the boss; she was wearing nappies so that her shite all over the floor didn’t give the game away.

I also saw a huge amount of what must be slave cats, the under stair cupboard had been turned into a chop shop, stolen wheelbarrows were being cut up for scrap.

Am I the only person to have discovered the secret world of cats and a chicken that thinks it’s a pimp?

Have I made an evolutionary discovery?

Like most people I have wall to wall carpeting inside my BBQ, I noticed that my Chicken (that was raised by cats) had been laying eggs on the carpet inside the BBQ, this morning I was shocked to find that the chicken had not only laid a couple of eggs but a kitten too.

Naturally I dashed inside to get my camera to record this evolutionary discovery and when I returned a cat was lying next to the chicken, this situation has me confused, did the cat lay eggs and a kitten or did the chicken lay eggs and a kitten.

I did think that as usual I had drunk far too much coffee and was seeing things, but photos never lie.

Any ideas?

Snakes alive ! Jumping and not for joy.

All of the snakes I've ever seen in New Jersey are non-venomous.
I've seen quite a few garter snakes
Embedded image from another site

and the much bigger northern banded water snake

Embedded image from another site

I've read that the banded water snake bites can hurt quite a bit (pun intended),
but generally they are harmless.

New jersey does have some venomous snakes. But, in all my many outdoor travels
I've never seen one (knocking on wood).
But, the main one in my area is the northern copperhead. Not a snake I would like to pet.

Further south there are timber rattlesnakes, especially in the pinelands regions.

Although I've encountered a lot of snakes in Florida,
the only time I've ever actually been bitten by a snake, was in Maine of all places.
It was a 'harmless' garter snake. At the tender age of 7, it made me bleed and scared a mite,
but no real other damage.

The next time I encountered snakes was when I went to college out west in Kansas.
They had one of the few veterinary schools in the country and I originally decided to become a veterinarian. While in college I made a lot of friends out there, and had a lot of fun.
The gals all wore leather belts with their name on the back. It sure made introductions easy. laugh
"Hey Sally, how have you been ?" wave

Since I was totally unfamiliar with the geography there, I had to rely on the locals for locations of interest. One time a friend recommended climbing a "mountain" to watch the sunset.
I was more than a bit skeptical, as Kansas has to be one of the flattest states in the USA.
Florida is another flat state. So anyway, 4 of us drove to this "mountain" together.
It wasn't a mountain, but it was a very large hill. It took us about an hour to get to the top
and at the top was a radio tower. So, crazy as it was, we climbed the radio tower too,
and then watched the sunset.

After climbing down the radio tower, one of us (not me) decided to challenge the other 3 to a race down the "mountain" and shouted "go". So all 4 of us ran down the mountain and on the way down we took somewhat different paths. At one point, I was running full speed and I came to a gully.
In it I noticed 8 coiled rattlesnakes resting on large flat rocks, peering up at me.

There was no stopping. I was going much too fast downhill.
If I tried to stop I'm sure I would have ended (in more ways than one) right in the gully on them.
So, thankfully, I instantly got the idea of jumping, as high, and as far, as I could.
It was the biggest jump I ever attempted. Literally, the jump of my life.
I sailed over the gully and watched the snake heads following the direction of my flight.
I landed beyond the gully on my feet, and continued running to the bottom of the "mountain"
with my heart beating extra fast from my encounter.

While I arrived first at the bottom, all 4 of us thankfully made it.
It was dark by the time we did.
One (not me) was bleeding from a tree branch. Crazy kids !
