DEATH, PENAL COLONY OR PRISON LIFE

What's the best method of treating convicted murderers? Should they be given life in prison, or sent away to a penal colony for hard labor, or maybe a life sentence in traditional prison. Maybe it depends on the particular case in question. If the circumstances were unclear as to the intention, but a life was taken and found guilty, perhaps prison only. Murder of a child, perhaps death penalty. Murder of anyone, which sentence and does it matter? Or maybe the death sentence should never be used as the taking of life as a punishment is behaving like the criminal.
Which punishment would make the best deterrent to crime?
What form of death should be used? Hanging, electrocution, drugs?
What about sending person to a penal colony away from normal civilisation?
Can you ever be sure of the guilty verdict?

Nature and Conservation

I am all in favour of restoring our natural environment back to its original state. No one was more pleased than I at proposals to reintroduce long absent species such as wild boar, beaver, and even wolves back into our countryside. There is, however, a point at which we must draw a line, and acknowledge that what existed centuries ago may no longer be appropriate to the modern age.

In my opinion, that point was reached when plans were announced to reinstate the once common European goblin back to its former habitat, in the area now known as the Peak District. Apart from the understandable alarm and opposition of the sheep farmers, of which there are many in the Peak district, there are other, more troubling, concerns that would stem from such a scheme.

Although the staple diet of the goblin is sheep, which is by far their preference, they will occasionally eat the odd child. Goblins are known to be a lazy species, and children tend to be more easily caught than sheep. Supporters of goblin repopulation claim that the number of children eaten would be almost negligible -two or three per year, at most- but several parents groups in the area maintain that even that would be unacceptable. I tend to agree.

Blocking emergency vehicles...

A few blocks east of me is a hospital. I can hear ambulances on their way to the Emergency Room. I can also hear them blowing their horns when someone is blocking their path to the hospital.
Less than a mile west of me is a fire station. If my windows are open, I can hear paramedics and fire trucks leaving the station. I can also hear when they blow their horns to alert cars to GET OUT OF THE WAY!

Last week, I was passing the fire station when the large ladder truck started pulling out. It's a 6-lane divided highway with a cement/grass center median. The traffic signal changes to red. I stopped and cars around me continued to run the red light ignoring the siren, lights and horn of the fire truck.

Today, a block from the hospital, cars in the turn lane refused to stop and allow an ambulance to get through the intersection that was coming from a different direction. Forget the siren and horn... these drivers didn't allow the ambulance legal right-of-way. I could see the ambulance having to wait (again) for cars not giving access to the hospital.

To say this is bad is an understatement. I don't know what it's like in your city. I thought Miami (50 miles south) was bad, Palm Beach appears to have taken the lead of bad drivers.

I'm sure there are laws for blocking emergency vehicles, but you have to have police watching and not busy escorting the ambulance to the ER.

I said "Do you drive a lot?"

I was behind a pickup truck in stop & go traffic and the vehicle only had one working brake light. I got into the adjacent lane on the next red light and saw the driver had his window rolled down. I rolled mine down to ask "Do you drive a lot?"
His response was that he already knew his brake lights were broken and I added isn't it worth the $10 so you don't get pulled over for faulty equipment?
He didn't want to hear that, but said... "Yeah. I'll get to it."

What an inconvenience. Change out a light bulb. Usually, it's a warning, but it's a reason for police to pull you over and check you out.

I used to say "Do you know how much a ticket for a broken tail light is?" Rarely did they know and I would add, Last I heard it's $75 and new bulbs are around $10.

Once warned a 'happy Spanish woman' who was playing music, singing and all the windows were down. Her brake lights didn't work. I told her. She was nonchalantly surprised and it didn't seem to 'soak in' so... I added, if someone crashes into the back of her car and the police see you didn't have brake lights, there is a chance she could be charged with the accident. If it's a bad accident, chances are they will take both of you to the same hospital. The light in her head came on!

I often have logical conversations with my ex-wife as we talk about the high percentage of bad drivers. I mentioned the guy in the pickup truck already knew his lights were broken.
Her comment to me was to stop being a good Samaritan. People are 'on the edge' and you never know when someone will take helpful advice the wrong way.

She's right...
