There's a St.Francis prayer that describes compassion to me. I can't remember the whole thing, but some of the lines from it are:
To listen, that we might be heard To understand, that we might be understood To love, that we might be loved.
It says two things to me; that I must have the tools to know what the other person is going through (I can't give what I don't have), and that I must use them. Compassion is about treating others as you would be treated and forgiving others as you would have them forgive you. JMO
somechick: My point exactly. There's a saying that fits your post to a T.
Walking a mile in someone elses shoes.
Sooo true. But sometimes we have to be aware that some may just be naturally depressed and just need an ear to listen and a shoulder to lean on. Patience is then called for without judgment.

I agree. I've always tried as I was taught growing up to always treat people the very same way I would wish to be treated in return.
I also believe in Karma. What goes around comes around. And for some it comes around/back awhole lot sooner.

Compassion is: getting a phonecall from a female buddy, and listening to her story of tears and tribulations in silence, and not interrupt her by trying to 'fix' it...when will I ever learn this??!!..

HJFinAZ: It jmeans, when some are very miserable and hurting, you shoot them and put them out of their misery..
Pat has a point to some degree. When people are suffering from an illness that puts them in terrible pain and there is no chance of them ever healing, I think it would be compassionate to call Dr. Kovorkian.
somechick: Can anyone tell me what the word Compassion means?
To me compassion means the willingness to put yourself in someone else’s shoes, Being a shoulder to cry on. Giving someone your undivided attention to truly understand what they are feeling. For instance, In my past relationships when I was having a down day and just needed to talk, It was always "Go to the doctor" or "Snap out of it". Which isn't helpful at all. Sometimes all you need is someone to listen.
