You can talk all you want about what is going on inside the brain we still are very primative when it comes to treating people with emotional problems. Drugs are a bandage on a large open wound. Most therapies do not work. Knowing this when I was in therapy, I suggested to my therapist lets try a different approach. lets take what we both know aoubt depression and try something new. Underlying anger has a lot to do with most depressions. you might not be aware of the anger but it is there. We worked on anger and stress management. It worked better than any other approach. No meds and just some very low level mood swings now.

I have seen both sides of the coin, and to be truthful, the biggest single cause of suicides among the people there was, "well intentioned" people telling the patients that they didn't need their meds, or not to take them, or destroying the patient/doctor trust. There are people, of course, who are allergic to certain meds, and resistant people, but that is worked out over time here, in consultation with their doctors, and alternatives are found that keep them safe and help them recover.......

You seem to forget that every single case of SSRI problems (and there are millions) began by people consulting with their doctors.

In most cases the doctor himself has never used the drugs he prescribes. That is especially true of SSRIs. So the doctor only knows what he has learned about the drug through jounals and studies etc.

And that is the very information that the drug companies have manipulated in order to maximize their profits.

There's one last video that I think you need to see. It shows how the FDA is literally controlled by the drug industry and systematically suppresses negative information about antidepressant drugs.

Realizing that the FDA is the "authority" to which doctors must submit concerning the drugs they should and shouldn't prescribe, and knowing that the drug companies wield enormous influence in the FDA, it's clear that people need to research for themselves and make their own informed decisions about what drugs they should and shouldn't take instead of blindly trusting anyone.

I don't expect anyone to take my word for anything whatsoever.

But I will certainly try to help people make informed decisions instead of blindly trusting institutions that are, frankly, not all that dependable.

Exactly.

Genuine therapy of almost any flavor will be more effective than drugs against depression or other emotional conditions.

Studies have found that talking to a priest, counsellor, or a good friend is just as effective as talking to a psychiatrist.
It has nothing to do with what they know.
What really counts is talking openly about the problem in a comfortable non-threatening environment.
Having someone there to listen and respond provides a sounding board, an outlet for emotions that are generally kept bottled up. Just the act of talking about the problem is, in itself, more effective than any drug could ever be.

smoky: Well, Ginger, you are a medically trained person, so you see only that side of the coin.

I worked in Suicide Counselling and an Intervention Team ..... and believe me, medications have NO issue here. You cannot keep giving people future appointments, and medications. It does Not work.

People need people! They need someone to listen to them, to understand what they are trying to say, to know that someone is listening to them, to air their views, and to know that how they feel is perfectly normal.

People, in the dark of night and the early hours, need more than medications. They need more than "time to work out their medication requirements". They need more than impersonal medical staff.

People just need other people - to talk to, to listen to them.

Amen to all that.

Phoenix...good to see you again...handshake

I have bipolar disorder. It is a hideous disorder. I was diagnosed 31 years ago.

I have tried everything to alleviate the pain, physical, mental, emotional and spiritual.

I tried what some have suggested...homeopathic remedies such as St John's Wort. I have tried over 3 dozen medications to no avail. I have tried everything short of EST (electro shock therapy).

I tried psychotherapy, group therapy, cognitive therapy even hospitalization but nothing has worked.

I tend to agree the world of psychiatry, psychotropic drugs and other medical treatments are mostly bogus and a huge scam.

But let me tell you...my symptoms are real, my pain is real and this disorder has basically ruined my life. It kept me from finishing college, having a career, getting married and having children. Things a lot of people take for granted, I would consider a blessing if I could have been somewhat "normal".

I have just about had enough of this hideous existence as I am at the end of my rope. Thank God you or others do not have this disorder. My best friend is paraplegic and I would rather be in a wheelchair all my life than to have this.

Count your blessings.

Listen!

You write more intelligently and concisely than almost anybody in CS.

Your IQ is way above normal - I have no doubt.

Your blessing is also your curse.

You think to much and live, like me, in your own personal Hell.

Kill your ego!

YOU are unimportant.

Let go!

You'll find peace at last when you allow yourself to be free of your own ego.

Love.

ALLOW yourself to be loved back!

YOU are an ok guy 'big time'............ let women love you and allow love to heal you.

You have too much to live for - don't let the disease beat you............RELAX and it can nolonger harm you!

Good luck to you - you are a far better man than you give yourself credit for!

gingerb: I like your attitude Robert. Hope you are a wonderful evening out.

I had a pleasant evening out............ drank a little too much wine and today I have zero hangover but I think I feel the depressive effects.

Had a meal with a nice lady who is on a mood stabilising drug - the one I had severe side-effects with and quit with the psychiatrists blessing.

We had a meal ion the top of a restaurant with a beautiful view of a bay. I dislike the food but the service was very good.

She had picked me up and dropped me off back in my square......... had a couple more glasses of wine and chatted to a guy I know who teaches English.

Got home. Crashed in front of pc and woke up feeling a bit yuck at 6 a.m.!

Oh well - you did tell me to avoid the alcohol! doh laugh

Hoi! Life is amazing innit?! Here is a good looking man, articulate, sounds educated, writes so well ... and he sounds miserable.......

My mother was a truly erratic creature - she always caused arguments, got hysterically abusive, had no friends, buried herself in her art (crazy like van Gogh!) ... then when she was a very old lady and needed care, NO-one could stand caring for her!...... Until she was diagnosed as Bi-Polar and given medication ... She turned into a gentle caring compassionate quiet little old lady!!! Truly amazing! But it was all too late in her life - she had already begun declining into the twilight zone of Alzeimers. But at least she had a couple of peaceful years of not antagonising everyone around her.

Yes, she was drugged, but in her case it was necessary - for her to fit into society. (Reminds me of Brave New World!)

Thanks very much smoky and here's me trying to get a positive angle on a tricky difficult situ... But I am inclined to agree with you, I am a hansome beast even if I say so myself...rolling on the floor laughing

Seriously folks, from what I've read an understood the 'Happy Pills' are only good for a short term fix(/b] and once like any illnesss o you realise you have a problem you are half way there to either beating it or containing it....And talking about it to a friend, confidant is more beneficial in the long run...At least thats what I've understood

I can remember the last few months before my father in law died. He was taking happy pills and he talked more in the 3 months then all the 15 years before. Now if happy pills do that to everybody they should be prescribed for everybody all the time.
laugh
Reality is that they have only a short term effect and either you take more or you go through the crash.
I have seen many people depressed before but still can't understand why they are depressed.
You see some people in life that struggle to stay alive are going through hell have a continuous battle and still they will be up beat and happy.
I guess it's all down to brain chemistry. It is definitely not logical.

Had depression twice, both post divorce. Can,t really explain it other than you feel that the weight of the whole universe is pushing down on you and is trying to crush you to nothing. The first was the worst.I really ought to have been sectioned. What saved me ? Time and the love of a truly wondeful mother (81 this weekend and a true inspiration).

Actually, both times the whole universe, that is to say my world in the form of my two ex wives really was trying to crush me to nothing.Still not sure why ex,s just want to really destroy you and whilst they might fail, can still cause you an awful lot of damage. Sadly, they do not always fail, this type of behaviour kills people.Sometimes the perpetrators get themselves killed too.

Yeps I guess I do. The part where it is not biological..it's norms and shoulds of society that brings a person to his/her knees. Do away with them... and life is much simpler.
