Antonio78Bo: Does TRUE altruism exists?

I mean altruism as doing good to someone without ANY ( even psychic ) reward.

@ the 2nd post above me, I thought for sure I would be the first to mention the fountain head but apparently you beat me to it! haha.

and in my opinion it does exist but doesnt mean its good. Psychology is never good in describing real things a person experiences. On the majority, except phenomenology or the human sciences division in psychology, as Psychology is all about reductionism. It is all about reducing an experience to something else, its parts, which in the end negates the entire experience as meaningful in its own context
EX: My mother dies. I have two lines of viewing this experience personally. Either it will corrode me or I will grow from it. I either make it positive or a negative thing. The action itself is less meaningful in my life to how i let it impact me. and this is how all actions are percieved, by you or another person about your actions or anyone elses. so i dont really know what your asking,

So are you saying, can you be altruistic or can i perceive you as altruistic? Or can you truly think of yourself as altruistic without that then becoming self serving and thus not altruistic?

idk how far you really wanted to take this but just read the fountain head. then think of it practically, in terms of what one must experience. Its not something hard to answer for yourself but harder to explain i believe, like so much else.

StressFree: Gandhi?

Didn't Ghandi do much for the greater good?

Wasn't his ultimate reward to do with the evolution of hios reincarnation?

If you force positive change that impacts upon the quality of life for others through self-sacrifice, you are rewarded with the end result, even if you have some way of not feeling good about yourself.

Besides, why shouldn't you feel good about your positive achievements?

I go back to my previous comment, that discussing whether true altruism exists, or not is a moot point.

Are there instances where rewards from "altruism" are negative, or destructive? What defines them so?

Perhaps I'm pointing out the obvious (though probably not), but if you received no good feelings from doing something you probably are a robot. But if you happen to be a human being, and gain no satisfaction at all from helping others (as Mother Teresa claimed, I believe, in a memoir), what would that say about you? I'm thinking nothing good at all.

Interesting question, Antonio, with profound implications.head banger wine

Grandepensees: I cannot answer your question, as I know not many altruists... But I have done many a good thing without thinking twice about it nor expecting anything in return. Does that qualify?

No. Because you like Obama. laugh

You seem like a good guy. I hate to admit it though. laugh
