or can you "argue" your point based on reasoning alone?
I don't think you really need a personal interest in a topic to be involved in it. It does help if you do because you tend to have more facts about the subject at hand...Then again if it is something that you have a personal interest in, then you probably are more passionate about it and are more prone to make a personal attack as part of your argument as well.
I personally comment on topics regardless if I have personal interest invested in it or not, because it may be something that grabs my eye and I'd like to express my view or opinion.
I don't mean to go off track wikked, so I will make this brief...One thing I absolutely cannot stand are people that feel they know it all. They feel as though they are a walking encyclopedia on all issues foreign & domestic, social & political, and all things in between. I understand some people have had extensive experiences in life, but to feel as though you know everything regardless of those experiences, just makes them look foolish. Again, I realize that we have different backgrounds as far as education & experience, but again, it's just foolish to feel the need to act as if you know everything about everything.

I agree with this
On one hand, it's interesting to read people's views on various topics and maybe learn something at the same time, about their cultural background and so on.
But I tend to lose interest when anyone pushes their views across as irrefutable fact, "my way or the highway" kinda thing

No one is right ALL the time
exactly...usually when it comes to cases of people like that , i just shrug it off and let them be right because it seems to come off as being way more important to them than it should

I agree there JS. There are also some threads that I ignore because of my lack of knowledge or interest. That said though, one can gain knowledge by reading some subjects....but there has to be an interest first.

Another thing I can't stand are people when faced with actual FACTS still feel the need to wallow in their pity party, or can't face it that they were wrong...Absolutely sad to see.
I only debate things 1.) I know about, 2.) I am well versed in, 3.) I've had experience with, 4.) I feel strongly about, for, or with, 5.) and sometimes just to cause trouble..

Some threads are just and and those are the ones I prefer to stay out of for sanity's sake.
I don't argue on here, I do my best to stay on topic and don't allow things to become to personal, or I say my piece and leave the thread because it's just not worth it to me to get put in CS jail or get into it with someone that clearly has more issues than Field & Stream and needs some serious anger management and meds.

I like to know that I have had experience for what I comment on, how can one argue about something they have not experienced, and then again we all experience things in different way therefore it does make it interesting to read other peoples experiences..when you haven't.
Example=never played rugby, but love and follow our nations great sport amongst many.
Who wants to argue, who's going to win, Wales or All Blacks, its in the bag..sorry Wales
