It's strange how when you give someone the facts of how much it takes to live and how minimum wage doesn't even come close to covering it they would rather cover their ears and scream "LALALALALALALLALA I CAN'T HEAR YOU" then acknowledge that maybe, just maybe their way is not working for most.

Working two or three jobs is not realistic. What are you supposed to do with your kids? One kid may only be around 500 in day care but that price goes up when you have more then one,and if your working constantly then you have to pay even more for day care.Basically that second job does nothing more then pay for all that extra day care.

terbear57: Hell taxpayer expense, look at wall street everyone lost The overall reduction in working class disposable income not only caused the housing bubble to burst, but has 1.6 trillion on corporate balance sheets waiting for a market. The GOP has done nothing but cut that disposable income by giving corporations more tax breaks at the expense of the working class.
The trickle down effect from the housing bubble bursting has been one that woke me upblues You never realize how bad a cut can bleed till you cut deeply and that did it. All those people the first two years at one time out of work and lostsad flower

gardenhackle: Let's call a spade a spade, indeed. Uniforms wouldn't be necessary and they wouldn't be cost effective. What sort of tasks? Picking up litter, working at food shelters, working at government facilities in whatever capacity the government might want or need and they were qualified for. I don't care if they are required to get on a treadmill every day and generate some miniscule amount of electricity.

There are people doing nastier jobs than all of that every single day in this country and I've done worse than any of that, myself. If someone doesn't like the work, then maybe they should raise their sights a bit and seek something more fulfilling in the private sector. Just a thought. Maybe it's a thought that would occur to them, as well.

I think we agree on this in principal and if it was to become the norm i think what i perceived as demeaning would not then be construed that way.

Conorco: and they're the best way scrooges can avoid paying their share. You have a lot in common with our muslim brethren, they can follow that line too don't they?

Well, since you are so interested in taking things to a personal level, that's the signal that you're done having rational discussion. Thanks for sharing.

bestbefore: Well having read many of your comments to the females on CS. I've know doubt you could, but as I am well into retirement and of a pensionable age I doubt I would be of much use.

Your reputation on here precedes you.

Bush's war in Iraq spent more money in any week than the welfare costs we spend in a year. The original poster had no facts to present -just opinion.

I worked two or three jobs to make ends meet when I reared my daughter single handed. We all helped each other out in my day as there were not the services available for child care that there are today, and basically the ones that are can only be afforded by 2 parents working in well paid jobs.

We used to have Council run nurseries, but along with most things ,like home helps, meals on wheels, day centres, there have ben so many cuts they no longer exist.

Conorco: There are some words in that last post i agree with "educating teens and at risk individuals" but you'd probably be to mean to spend the money on that, but beware, if you educate the poor god knows what more they'd be after.

I'll have you know I work hard, pay my taxes and donate to charity regularly, anymore than that...I've had just as difficult a road as anyone else, with the cards stacked against me and I've managed to overcome my own adversities and operate my own business, have a home and pay my own bills and way in the world.

I have pride and have two kids and while it's not been easy, nobody ever promised me a life on Easy Street, I have what I have because of honest hard work and gumption...when you're down there's only one way to go and that's up..hard work and ambition gets you much further than a sense of entitlement and using excuses to justify poor choices, laziness, or no pride in oneself.

Take a man fishing he eats for a day, teach a man to fish and he'll never be hungry...

There are abusers in all systems, including welfare. The majority of them do not even get enough for rent monies. Having a baby just to get "welfare" monies is absurd because they do not give one enough on live on. If such a thing bothers you then go out and do POSITIVE change to help people. There are alot of volunteer places to work and help. Open your eyes and see that it is not the poor people that has plunged the world into financial collapse. It's unlimited spending by the governments. The good book says to help the poor...the downtrodden, those in prison....where does it say to ostracize them? Perhaps it is our own thinking that is flawed....

One of the men know having to live on welfare now was one of those people. He was the biggest loud mouth around.According to him all you had to do was go out to work ,and work hard! You can work as hard as you possibly can and still come up so short that you don't even come near to covering even the necessities of life.

When his well paying job went away, and along with it all those great benefits all that was available was minimum wage.Savings don't last long when you have five little ones and a wife who decides to run off on you.
