Merriweather: Mr DaggyO

The homeless folk are not silly, they just have become street smart, and really its the only thing saving them... They cannot logically go to a poor area... the poor have nothing to give to the poor... they need to hang out in cities where they have a chance of getting food parcels and assistance... not to some out of town place where no one will even look at them...

True merri, sydney has the biggest homeless population in sydney, especially around central station.Every night coming home from my shift there would be at least 200 or more homeless lined up in sleeping bags along walls its quiet staggering to see.But they have become creatures of habit while they do not have a bed or room for the night, most dont go without food.
There are numerous soup kitchens around the city and central for the needy.

Another problem is out in sydneys west, parramatta where i used to do voluntary work in prince alfred park on a tues and sunday night..used to have a bbq.hotdog and coffee facilities, anyone was welcome, they would go to the soup at the anglican church in the morning and for lunch.and head to the park for a late night feed.

I met some wonderful people over the 5 year period.who unfortunately just get dealt the wrong cards in life, financial ruin.marriage breakups, gambling, alcahol etc.I have so many uplifting stories i could share and not so many...

venere08: Hi Merri, I have worked in one of the detention centres, the one that used to be in Woomera. Some children did travel on their own. Sometimes the parents would follow. There may or may not be good reason, but I do agree with the foreign minister that we should not have have loopholes(such as a lone travelling child) to the policy of deporting all boat people back to Malaysia. This is the only way to discourage people smuggling as the parents or other family member would have paid $15-20,000 to the smugglers who would have promised them that this way they too would be soon allowed into teh country. I think once the people smugglers test this and find out we do not weaken our position, then there will be no more such dangerous boat trips. The true refugees wait their turn in Malaysia and are processed to enter Australia and welcomed into the country. This is already starting to happen.

I don't think we should bring Julia's child bearing status into the equation though. It has nothing to do with policy making. It only emotionalises the issue which is not what it's about.

What she said... ^^ thumbs up

Merriweather: DaggyOne Hi ah...

I see many of the poor who come and ask for food parcels, and financial counselling/ advocacy... and truly, being fair, I'd say, most are unemployable. For a start, they dont have the education to even know to have a wash ... let alone a bath or shower, and most are on DSP. I have sad thoughts while I arm myself with a can of Glen20 to spray out my reception area when they leave.
We dont have security alarms everywhere for no reason...
Just wondering confused At the end, Who teaches them how to wash, bathe & shower uh oh

I'd like to donate sum time & help teach the women to wash, shower & bathe if u need the extra hands. Will throw in free wax with every wash thumbs up
