venere08: I understand that once returned to Malaysia, their refugee status will be processed and considered from there. If they are deemed to be true refugees, then they are accepted into Australia, including the children, whoc in the meantime, are being given safe haven, and basic medical and education services.
Venere,
If its all confusing for us... how do you reckon these little uns feel... they will just be mimicking and learning from the angry adults that they are in the company of...
I dont think this is a good learning thing for them...
Even my old mum, who is very determined said that this struck a wrong chord with her...
venere08: As you know, I am a mum too. And a person who very much cares about children and their physical and mental welfare. It is not a simple issue.
Yes, children are being used. Often by the parents, not just the people smugglers. Children should never be sent on such voyages on their own. Just because they were, does not mean that the parents had their welfare necessarily in mind. It would ahve to do with the fact that those parents know that they would fail the normal refugee status criteria, so they send their child ahead alone. What are they thinking??? This behaviour should not be encouraged. Being emotional about it, and allowing the child to stay, will do just that. Encourage further irresponsible behaviour on the part of parents in a similar position.
In Granada, Spain, I saw babies in mothers' arms. Their eyes were rolling back. I realised these babies are drugged by their mothers in the hope of attracting sympathy from passers by, especially tourists. I refused to give moeny to those gypsies as I did not want to reinforce such horrifying treatment of innocent babies.
Great post venere
Tip of the iceberg .. we should start as we mean to continue on this one.
People were up in arms about the "children overboard" incident and should be about this too. These children no doubt have a very tough life in their home country but despatching them unaccompanied to an unknown fate is not the answer and should not be encouraged.

I don't think I can say anymore, other than to say that it's important to look at the bigger picture, which has been stated. The Foreign Minister was interviewed this morning by a panel headed by Paul Bongiorno. You seem to have missed it. I like to tune in on Sunday mornings, a bit strange like that...
He clarified their questions more than satisfactorily to the whole panel, which is an unusual achievement by any Minister. In this case, clearly current government policy needs to go beyond bowing to emotional forces, which is what the people smugglers play on. See how well it is working with yourself? Exactly what they are after.
Of-course stories of young children being sent back pull at heart strings. But they will be kept safe. They are not being thrown to the wolves, which is akin to what their parents did when they put them on a rickety boat at the mercy of the oceans and pirates! Anyway, I have no more to add. I feel like I am flogging a dead horse.... ...besides I should be working!!

p.s. not sure what is confusing for you. Maybe need to have more facts? ...and all the more reason why children should not be sent on these dangerous journeys on overloaded boats on the high seas!!!
Why the heck people want to encourage this is beyond me.
Merriweather: back to a detention centre in Malaysia is a good thing ?
My view is, If a family sends their child out on a dangerous journey across the ocean, then there has to be a huge reason for this.. I think that we should accept children, because more than anything, not only are they just that, they are children, and they need to be growing up with opportunities to make something of themselves . I think that becaue Julia is not a mum, she cannot understand that... I also think that if refugee children come over, they can and will pick up our way of life...and grow to contribute to this country.
I would rather have boatloads of children come and be accepted than old people who are rarely going to want to contribute to this country...
What do you think??
I agree with you in theory Merri .... and children should never ever be anyhting but children and as such deserve to be protected, educated, etc ....
What I do believe these people skippering these vessels and the people responsible for puting these people onto these vesels, should be jailed for long mandatory periods, when captured ...
10 years each for the captain and his crew minimum ... I think it would slow this trading in humans down to a stall ....... jmo

After watching "come back to where you came from " A series on the abc. I think it would change most peoples veiws on boat people. I think the goverment should be more worried what walks off a plane and never leaves.

Nope send them back !!! Come to Australia the correct way no problems with people who do the correct thing.
I visited Vietnamese refugees in Malaysia at the time boat people exited Vietnam. The Malay government were shooting boat people off the beach. The Malay's had and probably still are caning refugees, i understand Gillard has been given an under taking by the Malay's they wont cane the refugees sent from Australia.
As far as people sending children away to a safer place from places like Afghanistan, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Burma, Iran, Iraq how on earth can you blame there parents for doing that i really cannot comprehend
