I pasted the link in my address bar and it took me to a fake virus scan saying my computer is infested with viruses and started doing a bogus scan. I shut the page immediately. Have any of you gotten the same email? It went to 4 other people besides me.

Sorry, but I cannot help you but good that you are warning folks.
I presume you've sent her a message via here as it may go to a different or personal e-mail address rather than a web-based one.
Hope none of the others got caught with the virus!!

I received an email from an old old member of CS - out of the blue - with just a link.
Luckily I didn`t open it - just sent him a reply email.
He mailed (from Malta) that he had not sent it - his address thingy had been hacked.
Today I got another from a member of CS whom I had also been in contact with via our private email adresses - deleted it.
I think it would be a good idea to mail one`s friends and contacts to tell them about this...?

Fortunately this link is designed to fool people into believing their computer is infected and to buy their fake program to remove the fake, non existant viruses. Generally, these are scams and wont damage your computer as long as you don't fall for the scheme by buying their program. They aren't designed to infect you computer but empty your wallet. Just to be on the safe side I ran a legitimate malware scan and found nothing.
I didn't email Jan because I figured the email might go to whoever hacked her email acct and I didn't want to give them a heads up that their scheme has been exposed.

Some time ago I’ve got an e-mail from a good acquaintance with nothing in it but an invitation to register at some site. As it wasn’t his style (by my impression of him) to send things like that, so I didn’t follow the attached link, just warned him that he got a virus.
If you’ve corresponded with a person for some while, you ought to be able to tell what things they do and what they don’t do. To recognize their “hand writing”, so to say.

Oodles of email addys have been hacked, I've been getting similar messages from a number of people for well over a week, some even two or three mails. I've only written a couple people about it, letting them know, and one wrote me saying "it wasn't her sending the emails!"
Just delete and keep on using my email addy like always, nothing is really "secure" nowadays anyway.

It could be Jan's or it could be yours or both or some common friend's as well.
Getting mails from your friends and family with just a link in it is the sign that they got into your contacts' list, sometimes the message has a subject others nothing in it.
Once i got a mail from my son and it said -in English- which by the way we communicate in Spanish:
“I am financially free do you want to be too”
I thought I wish my son were, he was just starting to work.
Another time I got a message from myself!!!
And I remember that long ago Medsummer –who btw I have not seen him around- said the same.
How to stop that?
I do not think that just the antivirus-antispam-anticookies... will do.
They will keep doing it, finding new ways to reach people.
What I do is I never open any of those links.

Some viruses arrive through emails like that. The first thing they do is to copy every address in your address book. Then they use your computer to send copies of the virus to all those people.
You can't really know if the virus really even came from the supposed sender's computer as the return address can be replaced by the virus with an address it pirated out of somebody else's address book.
I got a letter once from somebody I didn't know who thought I had sent them a virus because the infected file claimed to come from me.
That's why it's important to have a good virus checker that monitors emails as they come in.

I´ve been away for three months, Oxford then Italy working, so I haven´t been here, but yes it´s true, my email account was hacked. However, I think with the password change everything is ok now and my computer has not been infected. I think it happened whilst I was in Italy recently. I had problems with internet access and I could never open my emails for some reason.

Hackers ladies & gents are very good people and crackers are horrible people....(kinda like green bearded type folk like me are the salt of the earth whilst the bloke on Joni's thread are nasty vile creatures....)

I think you´ve got the wrong end of the stick here. My CS account hasn´t been active for three months and has not been hacked. It is my private yahoo account that I had problems with.

No point doing that, smoky. The Mods seem to think that CS is bullet proof from hackers. No idea why, given that NASA is hacked into...
I had my CS account hacked into today. I know that because there was one profile in my WVM list who is a pal of mine and would not have deleted him as I do ost others. Yet it is gone though I checked and his profile is still active.
Mind you, I have thoughts on this but will remain mum.
