mbcasey: I'm depressed everyday and today was no different. My neighbor got a new dog...a Great Dane and I went over and petted him. My day was completely turned around.

I had a dog named Casey who died 3 years ago. I miss her and even my nickname on CS is attributed to her. I still can't get another dog partly because I am not ready for it yet emotionally but seeing that dog today is making me rethink the situation.

God really blessed mankind with dogs!
yes I am debating getting a dog also, I know you have to be with them a lot and you have to be prepared financially also.but they are worth it.

I really wish my brother had taken more time before replacing his dog. He has become a hermit because of the dog and never goes anywhere. He also doesn't socialize with anyone because he feels he needs to stay at home with the dog. He has missed out on so much and all he does now is complain about how crummy life is. Very sad to see.

I know how you feel. My beautiful Siamese seal point cat, Princess, died on 31 October 2010. It just about killed me. I still grieve her death. She was 15 and a half and had been with me for almost 7 years. Princess was my best friend and baby. I did adopt another cat about 6 or 7 months ago. I did feel a little guilty for loving another cat but I know that my Princess would understand. My new cat isn't a Siamese but I will adopt another Siamese one day...so that my new kitty will have a friend.

I hope I am not being rude but do you really think a pet can substitute for a person? I only ask this as my brother has completely shut himself down from dating women for over 17 years and has devoted his time to his pets.

rolling on the floor laughing I changed the whole paradigm. I had 4 dogs and 27 cats at once 10 years ago. I decided to grow cacti instead...they don't even need water. I've always felt that plants and trees are a higher form of life than we...been on Earth longer than us.

The domestication of felines began in the middle ages during the black plague. The disease was born to humans by rodents. People got smart back then and brought cats in to kill the rats. It ended the black plague. (True Story}

I know I will never be without pets. They've helped me cope with life for more than half a century. For more than 20 years I was into private equine rescue. We had 15 rescued horses (along with 5 rescued dogs and any other animals that happened to show up on our doorstep). For many long years those wonderful creatures were my only link to sanity. When my middle daughter died in 06, having her horse and her dog around were the only reason I got out of bed every day. The work with our horses was tremendous and never ending, but it was so worth every ache and pain to ourselves and our wallet.

About 4 decades ago an old horseman told me something that has proved true time and time again. "The best thing for the inside of a human is the outside of a horse." I've found that saying to be true for just about any pet.

I'm a hermit with or without a dog...laugh uh oh

Maybe the dog is being used as an excuse as to why your brother is not socializing. He may need you to dig deeper and see what's really bothering him. Best of luck to him.

The financial aspects are something to consider. But I agree with you...they are worth every penny!

Getting out of bed is such a hard task for those who are deeply depressed. I am sorry for the loss of your daughter. Her horse and dog were a Godsend to you.

The trick we use to make an animal look like talking in Television, Movies and Commercials is to give them a spoon of peanut butter. It sticks to the roof of their mouths and they use tongue and lips to lick. Professional audio people dub sound effects to the matching lips.

Jeeepers: My dog has me well trained. He also keeps me out of trouble. He always gets the ladies attention who stop and say hello. He is well behaved and also is a great watch dog.
I would be lost without my four leg, furry little friend.
His name it Tucker the mean mother Fokker.

I am certain I am beneficial for him also.
I just watched "Greyfriar's Bobby" and let me tell you, it would do the world a lot of good if people could have just a fraction of the love and heart a little dog has. If you have not seen this movie, it is a " must do"--it's a 1961 Disney flick. How are you, Jeeps? Hugs to you, and your little pug, too. hug

I put this in my queue on Netflix, I think I've seen it before, reading the description it looks familiar, I love these movies. Thank you for the suggestion! hug

I've grown up with animals, lived on a farm, had my own horse at 7 years old. Right now I have six little dogs, they are so dramatic and funny, especially when we give them dialogues to go with their expressions which we do for entertainment...yes I have a crazy family. We have two cats, but they just watch this whole funny farm go on. Then there is the parakeet we keep in the kids bathroom (due to the cats), she only makes herself known when it's too dark in there!

Being sick a lot my dogs are my comfort. I have one dog who when I was very sick with a migraine and needed sleep I told her to go play with her brother and closed my bedroom door. When I got up three hours later my daughter told me my dog had slept by the door of my bedroom the whole time.

Animals for people who are sick a lot are a big comfort and don't get bored if they lay by your side for hours on end....they don't complain and I for one think it's a comfort to have them by my side.heart wings
