Quick Q , know someone who is severely depressed , might be on the verge of losing everything , including sanity. I have been noticing lately they have been gradually going downhill , and im starting to get worried for them.

What are some things that i could do to help them please.

Talk to your friend about your concerns, and let them know of the changes you've noticed in their behaviour. Suggest that they would benefit from talking to their doctor firstly, with the view to being referred to an experienced counsellor/psychologist, for urgent treatment of their emotional state. Under the Medicare Better Health system, they should qualify for up to 10 consults per calendar year, allowing them a rebate.

Your friend may or may not require temporary medication, but this needs to be professionally assessed, depending on how much in 'crisis' he or she is....Ultimately, let them know that you are there as their friend and for support.

All the best for your friend.

You might try to point to your friend that depression mainly arises from holding unrealistic expectations, and or constantly dwelling in past or future instead of staying in the here and now.

If the person is taking drugs whether prescribed medical or other, the drugs would likely hinder the persons reasoning process. If prescribed you approx the persons doctor and explain you observation to that person. If the latter then maybe not much you can do

my friend is a really down to earth person , i dont believe they hold any sort of unrealistic views towards things , but i could be bias and not see this.
Realistically , i dont know what is going on inside their head , i dont think even they do. unfortunately , there isnt much i can do , as i havent ben through this before ,and this is why i posted her , to get different views on getting help for them. I know they have little to no money available , so expensive quacks are out of the question.

I do worry more than i should about this , but you gotta do what you gotta do

When i was diognosed with depression, the dr said it was a chemical inbalance, My body wasn't making enough of this certain chemical which makes you more balanced. It can be inherited.

My mum has had depression. I told her the changes l had noticed in her and thank goodness she listened. With help from the dr re mediaction and my support she recovered. I found listening to her was the best support l could give her, no matter what she said l listened. Shingles set her depression off.

What you have to do is go to dr, have a mental health check. They ask the patient many questions of how they are feeling. After this is done, they put you onto a councillor. I know this as my 12yr old son was trying to harm himself, so i took him to dr and this is what happened. The mental health check will determine what help they need. cheers

Depression is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. Hence its impossible for people to 'snap' out of it, much as we would like them too.

You are a good friend Lok, you need to tell the person concerned. Let them know that you believe that they have a problem, let them know that no one deserves, or asks to feel this way, and that they need to talk to a doctor.

If need be (it maybe too difficult for them to actually do this) make the doctors appointment (with their ok) and drive them to the doctor, go in for support if they need you.

Your friend may not need medication - they will however need some form of treatment - so no doubt a good GP will refer them to a mental health professional.

Good luck Lok and good luck to your friend too. bouquet

Lack of a steady income, boredom, illnesses, can all have an effect on someones sanity, especially with the economy being low at the moment.I think the best thing you can do is keep good company with them, and spend more time with them than you normally do and see if you can notice something that is depressing them, and then take some sort of action to help remedy it for them.jmo

Lok, if this is who I think it is. They MUST go back to the doctor!! No one should feel this way, they are a wonderful, vibrant person. Please if you can get them to go, take them back to the hospital.. they need to talk to their doctor. I think they'd let you be the one to do it.

Banana have a natural anti- depression property in them. Hence why they always try to have them in prisons and nursing homes.

It is annoying to a depressed person for someone to say. Cheer up, things aren't that bad or to tell them to smile when they are not happy. These people are dismissing that persons feelings and should realise that it is ok to be sad as well. But yes if a person may be at risk of harm them maybe someone should try to act on that.
