As the owner of a fairly smart dog (a Border Collie) I can identify with this. Nice to see he gets such joy from his dog. I'm not really one to fall in love with their dog, but I look after him, walk him, brush him and vacuum up his dog hair.
I can't believe I'm the first to attempt to answer the question "what gives you joy?"

I'd have to say children give me joy. No grandchildren yet, but have a few surrogates. When my adult children have a win, that gives me joy too.
Watching a beautiful sunset can do it too. (Like the sunset coloured text?

After 13 years of total commitment with a great friend who had endured 2 divorces and a couple of serious relationships, and all the crap I went through during those times, it is no wonder that "A man's best friend is his dog."

As I mentioned, I have a border as well...I've just finished having a laughing session with my her. She looks hilarious, lying down with the biggest grin on her face, showing her own joy at getting attention...and I think she understood me when I said we were going for a walk now that the air is cool.laugh

Sorry Martia, after 35 years of this breed and the loyalty and devotion they have shown over those years, I am not willing at this time to let them put up with me. At this time.

Some economists have seriously suggested full-timers shrink their 37.5-40hr working week to a civil 21hrs - creates extra jobs, and provides for more leisure time...Hope you have a joyful Straya Day, serene.

So how many are having a 4-day weekend??laugh

Unfortunately many people believe that they should extend their 21 hours work (as if) over 40 hours and get paid according to the 80 hours pay they believe they should get.

I have just undertaken a task request for Wonder Boy at work who claimed 24 solid work hours working on a task I set him and resulting in something that was not comprehensible to most people. I undertook the same task from scratch (he has been working unsupervided on this project for 3 years and without Federal Govt interference and is supposed to be the 'guru' of it), I achieved an understandable outcome in 7 hours of my work. I don't have access to the Fed Govt database and have had tpo rely on the hard copies supplied.

At the completion of my work, I sought verification of my figures from Finance, and I had the answer within 5 minutes. Wonder Boy had had this information at less than 10 keystrokes (not including passwords).

So Venere, it is possible to cut down the work hours expended by some to less hours. BUT only if we have the right people doing the job.

And before all the knockers get on here about local government, a colleague of mine just spent a 6 months secondment with the State Govt. She said that she could not believe their work methods. After all her years in local govt, she had previously felt that local govt was not really pulling its weight enough to achieve outcomes until she went to State level. She now recognises how much effort local govt really puts in to bettering the community than the higher levels of govt.

Her plea, like so many of us in local govt, is give us the money to spend the limited funds we have more wisely to benefit the community.

So enjoy your BBQs and the fireworks on Australia Day, remember the hardships early settlers had (not all were convicts and bushrangers), and how most of us embrace harmony.

I know what you're saying washu...there is so much inefficiency in the workplace. You've given a perfect example...on the subject of local government...why do their CEO's, at least here in Adelaide, get salaies of around $500k pa?????????...I know of one who was an upper level public service executive, who resigned(no loss, I heard)...next thing you know, he gets one such plum posi. And us rate payers have to foot the ever increasing bill...And for what exactly??!!frustrated
...Bring on the 21hr week, and slash their salaries!! grin

Carl...Really??!!...How so?...You must have though at one time or other, maybe way back. I'm sure of that. To allow it into your life again, sometimes it helps to think of something that you did when you were little, and you found fun, and it came naturally. Maybe something similar, translated to you as an adult dunno

What if I send you my border collie? grin

Seriously, nothing.
Some things give me satisfaction, such as mastering something in karate, or doing a good job, or nursing a sick animal back to health, but joy . . . nothing.
I am numb inside.
I was once asked what happy memories I had of my childhood. I had to say that I truthfully did not have one single happy memory.
