Obstinance_Works: If it was as simple as that, Tom, there'd be plenty of other working class kids from the gutter who sound just like, and are as successful, as me. The greatest struggle for my education was a social battle and not an intellectual one, you really have no idea of the position of privilege from which you speak from.

Many of my friends made it to from positions of social deprivation, where swots were bullied and a kid trying to lift himself out by his own bootstraps. They all comment on the uphill struggle to maintain academic excellence in an atmosphere heavily weighted against, what they considered oppressive control, education being a part of that control, if you tried to use it to join the enemy you were a traitor, many gave in to peer pressure and didn't make it. A lot of them are taking advantage of her majesties hospitality.

One of the main differences between the middle and working classes is their attitude towards education, middle class go to uni, working class down the mines.

I know it has changed over the years with more working class kids getting chances at uni, but until the school work ethic is adopted the gap will never completely close.

This working class kid went to Uni, only he studied engineering - working class function and practicality showing themselves here - the decadent middle class easylife kids studied media and social science.

The number of kids that made it to Uni from my high school year group was in single fingers. The point being I can not carry the weight of 10 chavs and a dozen soft-science untermenschen on my shoulders. And Britain can not stand on this state of affairs.

However, I totally agree with the conventional conservative wisdom that many people and much of the working class is not of the intellectual capacity and merit to warrant higher education. Only we need materially resourceful industries - like the ones that Thatcher destroyed - that employ large numbers of workers for these people to go into instead of onto benefits or debt-creating jobs. Coal not dole.

It must firstly be said that I did not grow up in the UK but in Ireland.

For me Margaret Thatcher was a wonderful role model as I grew up, a strong woman who stood up to terrorism.

Not so, it was the Unions and bad management that started the rot of British industry, Thatcher had no chance to repair that damage so tried to make good by privatising what she could in order to preserve those industries, sadly the next government undid all her work and so the industries collapsed.
One should also not forget that within the EU she was a power horse, unrelenting and only working for the good of the UK, again the next government sold the British public down the river, with Blair signing away all our rights and abilities to get more from the EU community.
Some indeed many disagreed with her political ideas, me included to a degree, but no one can deny she was a true leader and one not repeated since. As a political leader she was and still is an inspiration to all women faced with a male dominated environment. She was not called the Iron Lady for nothing, and as will be seen next wednesday, was admired by the most influential of world leaders.
She deserves respect whatever your political leanings, shame todays politicians cannot come close to such leadership qualities!

Totally disagree with your post as for respect she gets none from me or the minors or steel workers in my family that lost their jobs and just because she wasa woman does not make hera feminist icon in my opinion

Margaret Thatcher has inspired women into politics in the same way that Myra Hindley inspired women into hiking. As many women hate her as men.

And I happen to notice that you're in China there. Do my give my warmest regards to all our expatriates out there profiteering from the decline of the West.

Tomcats2: and you speaking fo someone thats in a free democratic society that China is!! and what did your last line mean?

I'm not sure why my living and working in China has anything to do with my opinions as a British Subject, discussing a British Political leader who was a true leader.

My last comment was made because your comment showed you have a lack of respect for women, and, as such, refuse to even acknowledge that for Margaret Thatcher to become the British Prime Minister, was a historical first and only achieved because of her strength of character, that achievement is the inspiration to many other women. That you cannot/will not admit this fact shows your lack of respect for all women. IMO
