jamiethekid: When the war was over roughly 100,000 veteran s returned home. They say that 70 to 80,000 decided to live elsewhere I suppose the reasons for this high unemployment in Ireland and another being the rise of militant nationalism in the country which in many cases was hostile to those who had served in the British forces. At the end of the day people saw WW1 for so many to earn some money to send home to their families to put food on table not for the love of the British state.

But those people could have joined the army before WWI if it was just about money. As Ireland was part of the UK at the time they were entitled to join the army if they wanted.
In any history book I have read it says Irish people were happy with the Union until the execution of the 1916 leaders. They were unhappy with some parts of British rule but were seeing these slowly change with the likes of Catholic emancipation and the Land League and many other things.
After the executions of the 1916 leaders there was a huge swing against the crown that wasn't there before the rising.

MADDOG69: It was that fool Arthur Griffith that encouraged them all to join as he thought it would reinforce the idea of Home Rule.
Arthur Griffith oh Jesus the arguments I had in pubs over the years with this name. I literally ask a few sinn fein supporter's who founded Sinn Fein they literally didn't know its the people who don't know this scares me lol .

Sinn Fein morphed into the exact opposite of what Griffith was... a virulent opponent of Socialism. But, he still was a fool. laugh

No they weren't. But as I said things had changed a lot. The rising was a surprise to the people of Ireland and many felt uncomfortable with the fact it was done while Britain was involved in The Great War.

Also the "rebels" didn't cover themselves in glory taking over places like Jacobs. They shot and clubbed Irish workers who tried to stop them. To say that the majority of Irish people wanted a rising or to break away from the crown pre 1916 would just be wrong. I am sure many did but the vast majority were happy with the status quo at that time.

l understand what you are saying but it would have been the well to do families and businesses that would have no objection , not too sure about the Dublin workers p.s I never use social class preferences thats why we have a divide in all so call classes when we should unite as one, I thought a job was a talent a vocation not give you a class title .Lol where was I well anyways Big jim larkin changed all that and a great poet like W.B. yeats September' 1913 another inspirational man .Romantic Ireland dead and gone its with o leary in the Grave.

jamiethekid: So true and thats the main problem with society as a whole .lts pretty pathetic people suffer with confidence self esteem issues obesity depression etc, just to have a class title its pure insanity.Piece of mind and contentment is the ultimate goal not many people will never find it due to obstacles of society.

Very true. Too much emphasis on money and what people have. That's how people got caught up in the boom. They wanted the big car, investment properties, holiday home and skiing holiday at Easter instead of living within their means. It was all about keeping up with the Jonses.

At the end of the day you're health is your wealth, and family and friends trump any material things you may think you want.
